CHAPTER SIXTY-SIX.

JACQUELINE'S POV.

I already took my stance and was ready for a fight. Not without having Rosalie safely kept behind me.

I've steadied her behind me in such a way that if I had to move from my position to another, I would easily do so while moving and keeping her safely behind me again.

It was just a few minutes, and I had everything planned in my head.

Scott came forward and smirked at me, "Do you think I will fear you?" His smirk was not faltering when he spoke. "I know you can't handle the both of us because you are still very weak from the poison. I know you just woke up, for if you were not sleeping or half dead, you wouldn't have allowed me to take the girl without a fight."

I almost gave him a round of applause for guessing everything right. I mean, he should be a sorcerer and should be awarded an accolade.

Yes, I just woke up and was weak, but he had forgotten that Rosalie was involved here and that we, werewolves, could joke with anything in the world but our mate.

I would keep on trying to save my mate even if I became weaker than this. He forgot.

"You should know how much I hate discussion when we're supposed to be engaged in action. Bring on your fist, Scott, not your mouth. I have many things I want to do with my mate when we leave here alive, and I don't expect you to understand that. You don't have one."

That got him all enraged, and that was what I wanted. I wanted us to be done with everything so that I would return to the pack to be with my dear.

Scott rushed over to me angrily. He threw his punch my way, which I hit away. I would have loved to dodge it, but Rosalie was behind me, I wouldn't want anything to hit her by mistake.

He threw another, and I did the same for him. I hit it away.

He growled loudly and began to throw punches at me without stopping. He yelled out, "I do have one, but you took her away from me! You killed her! You killed Ophelia and my pup she was carrying!"

I was touched by the words he spewed, and at the same time, I didn't want his punch to touch me, so the next time he threw a punch, I welcomed his fist with mine, making sure my own was harder and unexpected.

"Arg!" He growled and stumbled because of the unexpected, painful impact my punch had on him. That, I could tell.

"I have always wanted to pay you back for what you did to me, and I wanted to pay Ophelia back, too, but trust me, I never wanted her dead. If I did, I would have killed her a long time ago, but mind you, I don't regret that she was killed by me," I told him my mind.

"Damn you!" He shouted and wanted to continue throwing his chicken fist again, but...

"Enough," The phoenix king growled, his voice low but commanding, halting Scott and his anger.

I almost laughed out loud. I mean, 'Why will a phoenix king leave his home, his territory to a werewolf's pack to come and control the alpha of that pack? Is that not disgraceful? That's ridiculous.'

I watched as my fellow alpha was being patted on the head by a man not worthy enough to even step on the ground of his pack talkless of his pack house.

I laughed.

I've never really liked Phoenixes for anything. To me, there was also nothing special about them than to breathe out a fire. That was all, and that didn't freak me.

If I needed fire for anything, all I needed were two sharp and strong stones, hit them together and boom! Fire.

I shook my head when I watched the phoenix king step forward. He placed a hand on Scott's shoulder. Then he leaned in onto Scott and whispered something into Scott's ear. His words were meant to be discreet, but my werewolf hearing picked up every word.

It was not my fault. I didn't plan to eavesdrop either.

"We can't risk another fight with him," The phoenix king muttered. "Not after what he did to us last time. We're not ready to be humiliated again, neither are we ready to lose more soldiers. We're not even fully ready for him yet. Remember our plan."

Again, that was like a slap in the face. Who in his right senses would see a clear shot for a fight and not fight it? Just who? Not me, and maybe not Scott too.

I just knew he wouldn't be stupid enough to listen to the Phoenix King this time.

My eyes went to Scott and I saw his jaw tightened, his fists clenching as his eyes linger on me as he processed the words.

I didn't stare away, I made it known to him I was listening to what they were discussing.

He let out a sharp exhale and turned his gaze away from me, and back to the phoenix king just to glance at him, then he returned his eyes to me.

"You've got lucky today," He spat out, trying to make his voice venomous, but all I heard was the sound of an empty barrel.

Unnecessary sound of noise.

He continued anyway, "But don't think for a second that this is over. Next time, you won't stand a chance. I'll be back with a plan, one that will leave you broken and begging. I swear."

I raised an eyebrow at his words, I was deeply unimpressed. "Big words for someone walking away, I'm highly disappointed in you, and I bet your ancestors are too," I said coolly to him, showing my disappointment.

I crossed my arms and locked eyes with his anger-filled eyes.

When I spoke, my voice carried a note of mockery, but my stance remained ready, prepared for any sudden attack. I trusted no alienated person in that room. "Just so you know, I'll be there, Scott. Bring your plan, your phoenix king, and whatever else you've got. I'll be there in my pack and on my throne, ready."

Scott's glare burned hotter, but he didn't move. He turned to the phoenix king, his voice low but audible to me to hear. "Next time, don't try to stop me when I'm in the mood to finish him off. Please. I wouldn't be able to stand his mockery if this ever happened again."

"Watch your words, Scott..." The phoenix king warned but Scott cut into his words.

"No, you, watch your words and actions. I might change my mind and not allow you to leave my pack alive. You can dare me, and I will show you how much mad I can be!"
