Chapter 127: Brandon's Turn
The following day at school, Sharon avoided Brandon like a plague. She wouldn't forgive herself if anything happened to him.
The promise of meeting Sharon after school heightened Brandon's anticipation, but as the day unfolded, he failed to catch even a glimpse of her.
As Brandon lingered under the bleachers after school, the moments he and Sharon last shared moments played in his mind.
But as time passed, his excitement turned into worry. Every second felt long as he scanned the surroundings for any sign of Sharon.
An air of uncertainty enveloped him, questions demanding answers swirled within his thoughts.
The sounds of other students passing by by made him feel like they were making fun of him.
Doubt started creeping in, did she truly intend to meet him here? Or not?
But she promised.
Two hours went by, and still, Sharon was nowhere to be found. He wondered if something unexpected happened, preventing her from coming.
Did the promises of a budding relationship unravel before they could even take root? The hope of their new relationship seemed to be falling apart.
Feeling disappointed and concerned, Brandon left the shelter of the bleachers with a heavy heart.
The memory of their kiss was now fused with uncertainty of what transpired on this seemingly important afternoon.
Feeling frustrated as he walked home, his anxiety intensified, threatening to consume him whole, which made each step more burdensome than the last.
Sharon had no choice but to break their promise and leave him waiting. She spent the afternoon consumed with worry and guilt, torn between her growing affection for Brandon and the weight of the secret she had been burdened with.
She knew she couldn't risk his life, but she also couldn't bear the thought of hurting him.
Later that evening, Brandon tossed and turned in his bed, he was unable to shake the feeling that something was wrong; that Sharon's absence meant more than just a change of heart.
Unable to find solace in sleep, he decided to confront her the next day at school.
When the recess bell rang, Brandon rushed to her class, hoping to catch her before she performed her usual disappearing act.
Sharon's face went pale as she saw Brandon striding purposefully towards her desk after the recess bell rang.
She quickly looked down, pretending to gather her books, hoping he would walk past without stopping. No such luck.
"We need to talk," Brandon said tersely as he reached her desk. Sharon kept her eyes averted, shaking her head slightly.
"I have nothing to say," she mumbled, moving to stand up. Brandon put his hand on her arm, not forcefully, but enough to stop her from leaving.
"Well I do," he insisted. Sharon slowly lifted her eyes to meet his gaze. The hurt and confusion she saw there made her heart clench with guilt.
"Please, Brandon," she implored, her voice just above a whisper. "Don't make this harder than it already is."
He stared at her, brows furrowed.
"Don't you think I deserve some kind of explanation for why you stood me up yesterday? One minute you're saying you want to be with me, the next you're ghosting me. What happened?"
Tears filled Sharon's eyes. She couldn't tell him the real reason.
"Please…talk to me, Sharon. What happened?"
"I can't…I just can't, okay?" she stammered, pulling away from him. Grabbing her bag, she rushed out of the classroom, Brandon following close behind as she made her way to an empty hallway.
"And that kiss? It meant nothing?"
"It…did. I'm so sorry, Brandon," she said and took off.
"Sharon, wait!" he called out. She stopped, turning to face him with tears now spilling down her cheeks. The bewildered look on Brandon's face melted into concern.
"Please forget about me, Brandon," she whispered. "It's better this way." Before he could respond, she spun on her heel and hurried away, her heart shattering into pieces with every step.
As the days passed, Brandon became increasingly despondent. He tried to reach out to Sharon, but she continuously ignored him.
Each time, Brandon's heart sank a little deeper, his confusion and hurt growing with each unanswered text and missed phone call.
Meanwhile, Sharon was tormented by her decision. She desperately wanted to explain everything to Brandon, to tell him the truth and hope he would understand.
But the fear of putting him in harm's way held her back, like an invisible chain because of a painful secret.
As days rolled on, the once budding connection between Brandon and Sharon withered away.
Brandon, now convinced that Sharon had played him all along, withdrew into himself, burying his emotions and vowing never to let anyone hurt him like that again.
He decided to focus on his studies and football, while nursing the wounds of a shattered trust.

Nicole patiently awaited the unfolding events before delivering her ultimate move. If she played her cards right, Brandon will fall into her trap. Just like Sharon effortlessly did.
Nicole, eager to captivate Brandon, decided to transform her appearance, opting for a more subdued look.
Nicole stared at her reflection in the restroom mirror, barely recognizing the girl looking back at her, she almost felt like a different person.
Gone was the heavy black eyeliner and dark lipstick she usually wore. Her multiple facial piercings had been removed, leaving only small studs in her ears.
Her wild, dyed black hair was pulled back in a neat ponytail.
To complete the transformation, she wore a pastel pink sundress she pilfered from Sharon's closet, aiming for the “good girl” image that Brandon favored.
It was such a soft, feminine look compared to her normal ripped fishnets and black band tees.
In this altered guise, Nicole discovered a surprising beauty within herself. She almost felt like she was in a costume, trying to play a part that wasn't really her.
A part of her mourned the loss of her edgy style, her armor that helped her feel confident and powerful.
But she knew now that Brandon would never look twice at a girl dressed in all black with a half-shaved head.
He wanted someone sweet, wholesome. Someone like Sharon.
Nicole examined her bare face critically. She looked younger, more vulnerable this way and beautiful in her own way.
