Chapter 46 This Isn't Over
Lara's pov
I screamed out. “Don't do this Damien please”, but he wasn't looking at me, he was focusing on Lucas.
“Let her go and take me instead”. Damien said.
Lucas thought about it for a second and then pushed the woman away.
She fell to the floor and stylishly crawled away, someone helped her up. She immediately ran out of the coffee shop without looking back.
But I wasn't relieved yet, Lucas can do and undo with the knife he was still holding.
Lucas was walking towards Damien, God. I was so skeptical.
Damien walked forward to him slowly, his legs were shaking so bad that he could barely walk, but he kept going.
When he got close enough, Lucas grabbed him and put the knife to his throat.
“Now everyone, leave now!” Lucas yelled "or I will kill him right here!”
Marcus looked at me, his face said what we were both thinking. One mistake and Lucas would kill Damien.
"Don't follow us," Lucas said. He started backing toward the door and dragging Damien with him.
The knife was pressed against Damien's throat. I could see a small cut and blood starting to drip.
“Lucas, please,” I beg you… Don't do this to him, just let him go.”
"You made me do this! You chose him over me!"Lucas screamed at me.
"I'll come with you please, just let him be"
Damien's voice was weak. “Lara, Don't please.”
But I didn't care, I couldn't let Lucas hurt him, never.
“I will do anything you want me to do. Just don't hurt him.”
Lucas laughed out loud. “You think I'm stupid, he said. I should let him go so that the security can grab me.”
He was actually right, even Marcus was waiting for a better opportunity so he could act fast.
Lucas got to the door, he kicked the door open with his foot and started dragging Damien outside.
I ran after them. "Lucas! Lucas, please!"
The outside was bright and sunny, normal people were walking by.
Everybody almost ran when they saw Lucas dragging Damien with a knife. But Lucas didn't care. He just kept moving towards the parking lot.
"Don't follow us!" he yelled again. "Aswear I'll kill him!"
The security was following at a distance, they wouldn't dare move close enough to do anything.
I was running behind them and crying.
"Lucas! Take me instead! Please!"
But he wasn't listening, he just focused on getting to the parking lot and started looking for his car.
Damien's pov
My throat hurt where the knife was pressing. I almost fell to the ground. I could barely stand. But I just had to stay strong for Lara.
Lucas was a bit distracted, so he started looking for his car. Yelling at people to get back.
For just a second, the knife moved away from my throat.
Just a second.
I took my chance.
I elbowed him in the stomach as hard as I could.Lucas made a sound like the air got knocked out of him.
The knife fell from his hand and clattered to the ground.
I tried to run but my legs couldn't help. I fell to the ground.
Lucas stood up again and grabbed the knife."You shouldn't have done that."
He was standing over me, raising the knife.
He was going to stab me.
Lara's pov
Everything happened in slow motion, Lucas raising a knife over Damien.
Damien falling on the ground and unable to me.
Me screaming my voice out.
Then a loud bang.
A gunshot.
Lucas jerked backward, his body twisted and he fell to the ground.
Blood started spreading on his chest, his white shirt already turned red.
One of the security guards shot him.
He'd had no choice. Lucas was about to kill Damien.
I ran to Damien.
"Are you okay? Hope you are not hurt?"
He was breathing hard. "I'm fine. I'm okay."
I helped him sit up, I looked at his throat. There was a cut but not deep.
We both looked at Lucas.
He was lying on the ground a few feet away, the knife beside him. The blood already spread on the pavement.
Security guards surrounded him,one of the security men kicked the knife away and the other one was calling 911.
Lucas's eyes were open. He was looking at me.
His mouth was moving but no sound was coming out.
I didn't go to him. Didn't move.
Just held onto Damien and watched.
The ambulance and the police came fast. The paramedics rushed to Lucas and started working on him.
“He's still breathing. We need to move now”.
They put him on a stretcher and loaded him inside the ambulance.
Lucas's eyes met mine while they were trying to close the doors to the ambulance. He was trying to say something.
They drove away and the sirens were blaring.
Police were everywhere. They were taking statements, talking to witnesses.
The security guard who shot Lucas was talking to officers.
"He was about to stab him, I had no choice than to act fast.It was self defense."
All the witnesses agreed because they all saw what happened.
Lucas was about to kill Damien. The guard saved his life.
A paramedic came over to check on Damien.
“You’re bleeding sir, let me help you to manage that cut.”
She worked on his neck and put a bandage on it.
"You should go to the hospital. You need to be checked out properly."
"I'm fine,"he said.
"You just got out of the hospital three days ago. And you were just held at knifepoint. You're not fine."
Marcus brought a car over and helped us get in.
We drove to the hospital in silence.
I was shaking and I couldn't stop.
Damien held my hand so close as we went to the hospital.
At the hospital, they checked Damien over and made sure the cut wasn't serious.
It wasn't that serious, it just needed a few stitches.
While we were waiting, a police officer came to talk to us.
Lucas Ward is in a critical condition, I hope he is going to survive.
"When he's stable, he'll be transferred back to prison. This time there won't be any appeals. He's done."
I didn't know how to feel about that.
The police asked us questions and we answered him according to everything Lucas did and how he threatened us.
Finally they let us go.
Marcus drove us to pick up Ethan from the hospital where he'd been waiting with a nurse.
He didn't know what happened. Just knew we were gone for a long time.
We drove home to Damien's house.
The house felt safe and calm at least from where we were coming from.
I gave Ethan dinner and put him to bed early, he was really exhausted.
Then I went to the living room where Damien was sitting on the couch and sat beside him.
"You could have died today," I said.
"But I didn't. Thank God we're both okay."
"You can barely walk and you tried to fight him. What were you thinking?"
"I was thinking that I wasn't going to let him hurt you. I'd die before I let him touch you."
I started crying. All the fear and stress from the day finally coming out.
Damien pulled me close. Let me cry into his chest.
Lucas once he survived this and went back to the prison. He is never coming out again.
Later that night, after Damien fell asleep on the couch, my phone rang and I picked up.
I heard a heavy breathing on the other end and then a weak voice.
It was Lucas again.
"This... isn't... over..."
The line went dead.
I dropped the phone and ran through to check if all the doors and windows were locked.
How did it happen? How did he call me? Was he not supposed to be in the hospital and under proper monitoring.
Did he escape again?
Or did someone help him?
I looked out the window into the darkness.
Was he out there somewhere? Watching the house?
My hands were shaking as I picked up my phone to call the police.
But then I stopped.
What if they didn't believe me? What if they said I imagined it?
I looked at Damien sleeping on the couch.
Honestly, whatever it took, I had to protect them.
Even if Lucas came back, I wouldn't let him hurt my family.
Not ever again.
