Plan Backfired
Plan Backfired
Georgina quickly braced up her face before letting out her usual deceiving smile, the same practiced expression she'd perfected over years of manipulation and pretense. Her mind was racing, trying to figure out how to salvage this situation that had spiraled completely out of her control.
"Mr Deveraux, I never expected you to come," she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness as she smoothed down her dress and tried to compose herself.
Jamal chuckled before sitting on a couch, his movements deliberate and controlled. He crossed one leg over the other, making himself comfortable like he had all the time in the world. "When my wife is here already, how do you expect me not to come when my wife is coming over," he said, emphasizing the word 'wife' in a way that made Georgina's stomach clench.
Georgina smiled and nodded, though her smile felt more forced now, the muscles in her face straining to maintain the facade. She could feel sweat beginning to form at her temples despite the air conditioning in the room.
"Okay I understand what you want to do bringing her safely back home, that's so kind of you, don't worry I'll handle it from here," she said, trying to regain some semblance of control over the situation. Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her, knuckles white with tension.
Jamal smiled, but there was something cold and calculating in his expression that made the temperature in the room seem to drop several degrees. "Seems like you don't understand the matter here, I'm not leaving here without Queenie," he said, his voice carrying an undertone of finality that brooked no argument.
Catalina stared at them confused, her eyes darting between her mother and Jamal. She could sense that something was terribly wrong, that her mother's carefully laid plans were crumbling before her eyes, but she couldn't quite grasp what was happening.
"I thought we talked about it already, you agreed to divorce her," Georgina snapped confused, her composure finally beginning to crack. The desperation was starting to seep into her voice despite her best efforts to remain calm and in control.
"Did I?" Jamal asked, staring at her like he didn't understand what she was saying, his head tilted slightly to one side with an expression of genuine puzzlement that was clearly calculated to unnerve her.
"I still have the video, I won't hesitate to post it if you refuse to let her go," Georgina snapped, playing what she thought was her trump card. Her voice rose slightly, the threat hanging in the air like a weapon she was ready to wield.
"Did you really think, I would fall for your silly little games?" he asked before sharing eye contact with Queenie, a look passing between them that spoke of understanding and partnership that hadn't been there before.
"Well auntie, I brought you a special surprise gift," Queenie said, opening her bag with deliberate slowness, savoring the moment like she was unwrapping a present on Christmas morning. There was a confidence in her movements now that hadn't existed when she'd lived in this house.
She brought out her phone, her fingers steady as she held the device, before looking directly at Georgina with eyes that no longer held any trace of the fear or submission that had once defined their relationship.
"Do you care to see what's in here?" she asked, her voice sweet but with an edge that cut through the tension in the room like a knife through butter.
Catalina glared at her, confusion and growing alarm warring on her face as she watched this transformed version of her stepsister. "What nonsense are you trying to display?" she asked, her voice sharp with irritation and a hint of panic she couldn't quite suppress.
"Nothing much, just something amazing and quite sweet," Queenie muttered and played a video for them, her thumb moving across the screen with practiced ease as she navigated to what she was looking for.
Georgina's eyes widened when she saw the video, all the color draining from her face as if someone had pulled a plug. It was a full video about the poison incident, crystal clear and undeniably authentic, showing every detail of what had really happened that day.
"How did you get this video?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, her hands trembling slightly as the full implications of what she was seeing began to sink in.
"Are you surprised auntie?" Queenie asked with a sly smile, the same kind of smile Georgina herself had worn countless times when she thought she had the upper hand in a situation.
"That's fake, you're trying to frame me, how can I attempt to poison myself," Catalina snapped, but there was a hysteria creeping into her voice that betrayed her growing panic. Her face was flushed red, and she was gesturing wildly as if the physical movement could somehow make her words more convincing.
"Well you can tell it to the judge once we get to court," Queenie said calmly, her composure a stark contrast to Catalina's increasingly frantic demeanor.
"How about, we post our videos online then let experts decide which video is fake or real, let's see which company that will suffer the most loss, mine or yours," Jamal asked, his voice carrying the weight of someone who had billions of dollars and the best legal team money could buy backing up his threats.
Georgina chuckled, but it was a hollow sound that echoed strangely in the suddenly quiet room. The laugh didn't reach her eyes, which were darting around as if looking for an escape route from this nightmare scenario.
"Don't think I can get intimidated by that fake video because it won't work," she said, but her voice lacked the conviction it had held earlier. She was grasping at straws now, and everyone in the room knew it.
Jamal chuckled, a sound that was infinitely more confident and genuine than Georgina's had been. "I'm done here, I have nothing else to say."
"If you think the video is fake, then post yours which is the original, we can find out who's telling the truth in court," Jamal said standing up, his tall frame unfolding from the couch with the fluid grace of someone completely comfortable with his own power and authority.
He stretched out his hand to Queenie and she placed her hand on his, the gesture simple but loaded with meaning. It was a public declaration of partnership, of unity, of two people who had chosen to stand together against whatever came their way.
"I'll be taking my leave now auntie," Queenie said with a sly smile that was equal parts triumph and warning. The word 'auntie' came out with just enough emphasis to make it clear that their relationship had fundamentally changed.
"Be careful Georgina, you and I know you're still a kid when it comes to mind games, but don't worry, this is just a little piece of evidence on what I can do," Jamal said, his voice carrying the quiet menace of someone who had barely begun to show his true capabilities.
"Think about it, if I was able to lay my hands on this video, what more can I be able to do, don't doubt my abilities," Jamal said before walking away, his words hanging in the air like a promise and a threat all rolled into one, leaving Georgina and Catalina standing in their own home feeling like they'd just been completely outmaneuvered by people they'd underestimated.
