Chapter 77 The Envoy of the Underworld
Lorna shot Charles a suspicious look.
"But Zachary really didn't know, right? Otherwise, you wouldn't have had a reason to save him," she said.
Despite all the dark and death energy around Zachary, he managed to resist being completely consumed and just fell into a coma.
The luck vortex above his head was packed with a dense golden aura, even more than Lorna's.
So Zachary must be a big deal, someone who wouldn't let his research be used for war.
Charles nodded, looking guilty and regretful. "Yeah, at first we thought Zachary was making destructive weapons on purpose, causing all those casualties. We hated him for wasting the nation's resources. But it turns out he was working in the lab for decades, trying to help humanity. He's taken a lot of public criticism over the years."
As Charles spoke, he glanced at the motionless Zachary lying on the bed, noticing his silver hair. The misunderstanding and criticism Zachary faced must have weighed heavily on his heart.
Lorna looked at Charles disapprovingly. "That's on you. He's been back for days now, and you still haven't cleared things up publicly. Now the enemy necromancers have taken advantage of the situation."
Charles's eyes widened as he looked at Lorna.
Lorna continued, "The rune behind Zachary's ear can absorb everyone's negative opinions about him, turning them into dark energy that gradually destroys him. It's serious now; the dark energy is growing, increasing Zachary's chances of death. We need to clear his name fast."
Charles's anxiety grew, and he quickly turned to Lorna. "Ms. Martin, do you mean we should issue a clarification right away?"
Charles was hesitant, worried that such a big move might alert the enemy since Zachary had just returned from their territory.
"Don't worry, I can track their necromancer. As long as you can turn public opinion around, I won't let Death take him from my hands!" Lorna said confidently, and Charles didn't dare underestimate her.
Lorna had already cast several purification scrolls around the bed, slowly purifying the small range of dark energy around Zachary.
Charles watched Lorna's actions, not daring to say much.
Lorna took out a set of golden needles from a Space Scroll in her bag and spread them out on Zachary's chest.
"What are you doing?" Charles asked, noticing these needles seemed unusual.
"It's too late to rely solely on reversing public opinion. Zachary's condition is getting worse," Lorna replied, her fingers moving quickly as she inserted the needles into various points on Zachary's body. With a flick of her finger, the ends of the needles quivered slightly.
This scene was witnessed by the head of the military hospital, who had just arrived urgently after receiving the news.
The newcomer was shocked and quickly intervened.
"Mr. Green! Who is this person? You can't just start needling the patient without a doctor's supervision!" the head of the military hospital exclaimed, stepping forward to pull Lorna away.
Charles stepped in to block him, his face filled with anger.
"What are you doing? Can't you see Zachary's complexion improving?" Charles retorted, shocked by Lorna.
The head immediately looked at Zachary on the bed, astonished. Zachary's previously pale face was slowly regaining color!
"This is impossible!" the head exclaimed. Their doctors couldn't heal him, and now this young girl had done it?
Charles gave him a sidelong glance. "I think you've been in this position too long to know your place."
Hearing the threat, the head of the hospital fell silent, not daring to speak further.
Lorna infused a bit of her own luck into each of the golden needles in Zachary's body, boosting their protective effect.
She turned to Charles, ignoring the hospital head standing nearby. "Mr. Green, Zachary's condition is super unstable. Can you bring some high-ranking officials or people who have made significant contributions to the country? They need to come willingly. I'll create a shared magic circle to temporarily link their fates with Zachary's. Otherwise, he won't last long enough for his reputation to be restored."
Lorna watched the rapidly diminishing luck on Zachary, the golden aura fading, and her face grew anxious.
Realizing the urgency, Charles ran out to make a call.
A few minutes later, he returned and told Lorna, "Ms. Martin, all the TV stations and online platforms are working together to clear Zachary's name. National leaders have also come forward to clarify the situation, and it should take effect soon. Plus, several leaders are already on their way here!"
Charles, being reliable, had contacted several reputable leaders.
Lorna had intended to remind him to intensify the clarifications, but it seemed unnecessary now.
Lorna glanced at the speed at which the death energy was gathering. The envoy of the Underworld was coming. She didn't have enough luck to deal with them and support the shared magic circle.
She immediately called Marc at the studio.
"Marc! Get to the military hospital right away; someone will let you in at the entrance!" Lorna's tone was urgent.
"On my way!" Marc, sensing Lorna's urgency, quickly locked up and drove towards the military base.
A half-hour drive was covered in just ten minutes by him.
Seeing Marc running in, panting, Lorna was delighted. "You're so fast! Great!"
Lorna looked at the black portal slowly appearing in the corner of the room, her expression serious, and turned to Charles. "Everyone, leave now. No one is allowed to enter, no matter what you hear. If something bad happens, you're on your own."
Charles's eyes widened as he realized something. He immediately pulled the reluctant hospital head out and shut the door.
"Marc! Do you see it?" Lorna asked.
"I see it! But why did you call me here?" Marc replied, still unsure why Lorna had summoned him.
"To meet your old friends." Lorna smiled mysteriously.
"The envoy of the Underworld is coming. Don't be scared," Lorna reassured Marc.
A black hole appeared in the air, revealing a field of mandrake flowers. A woman with wavy hair emerged from the hole, wearing a red sundress and high heels.
Her necklace was a bit scary; it was a string of human finger bones.
Marc's eyes widened. "The Underworld has such modern beauties now?"
Lorna rolled her eyes at him, relieved that the envoy was a familiar face.
"Lorna, what's the matter? Can I take this guy?" Chloe Norris floated over to Marc, curiously circling him.
"It's been so long, Chloe, and you look even more beautiful," Lorna said, playfully leaning in.
"Don't try that on me. I've fallen for your tricks too many times. This time, I'm not buying it. The Reaper has ordered that Zachary has lingered in the mortal world for too long. It's time for him to go," Chloe said, twirling her hair, her voice full of charm.
Lorna gave an awkward smile. "Chloe, can't you make an exception? Zachary's had such a hard life. He's been misunderstood his whole life, but he's a good person. He didn't even die in peace. It's so sad!"
Lorna knew how to appeal to Chloe's kindness.
A flicker of hesitation crossed Chloe's eyes, but she quickly regained her composure.
"No way! I'm one short of my quota this month. If I don't meet it, the Reaper will dock my vacation days again!" Chloe said firmly.
