Chapter 307 Surgery
Chapter 307 Surgery
Matthew cursed under his breath and immediately pulled out his phone, dialing Delphine.
The moment she picked up, he barked, "Get to The Gilded Lounge. Now. Don't waste time."
Inside the private room at The Gilded Lounge, the air was stifling and hot.
When Delphine pushed the door open, Matthew was slumped on the sofa, face flushed, breathing heavy.
Before she could ask what was wrong, he yanked her into his arms. His burning hands slid up her back, roughly tearing at her clothes.
Delphine froze, her heart hammering.
Usually, she submitted to Matthew's advances. She knew what her value was to him. She had no right to resist.
But today was different.
The diagnosis from the hospital that afternoon was still tucked in her purse.
She was six weeks pregnant. With his child.
"Matthew, don't... please," Delphine said, pushing against him with all her strength. Her voice trembled.
Matthew thought she was playing hard to get. His eyes went cold.
He bit down on her pale neck as punishment and laughed softly. "What? Haven't seen you in a few days and now you're copying Evelyn's little games?"
Delphine's heart ached. Bitterness spread through her.
Her eyes reddened. "How could I ever compare to Evelyn? At least Mr. Brown actually cares about her. He's not just playing around."
Matthew froze. He forced down the heat coursing through his body and stared at her, his tone dangerously low. "What did you just say?"
He didn't like the envy in Delphine's voice when she mentioned Evelyn.
She wanted too much. She was overstepping.
Delphine trembled under his gaze, choking back tears. "I really don't want to tonight... Matthew, please. Please?"
She didn't dare tell him about the pregnancy.
She knew him too well. With his reckless, careless attitude, he'd never let her keep this baby.
He'd probably drag her to get an abortion himself. He'd made it clear before—he wouldn't allow any illegitimate children.
But all her resistance, all her pleading—Matthew never cared.
Her clothes were torn open, piece by piece scattering across the cold floor. Like her life, which she had no control over. Only Matthew held the reins.
The drug completely destroyed Matthew's rationality. His movements were violent and uncontrolled.
The battle raged until dawn. Finally, Matthew was satisfied. Exhausted, he released her.
He held Delphine's limp body and carried her to the club's VIP suite.
Looking at her trembling form, tears streaking her face, Matthew felt a flicker of pity.
He leaned down and kissed away the wetness at the corners of her eyes, his tone lazy and indifferent. "Why are you crying? You used to enjoy it."
Delphine pressed her lips together and turned her face away without a word.
Matthew didn't bother coaxing her. He patted her shoulder, his voice detached. "I'm too tired today. Go clean yourself up in the bathroom."
Then he closed his eyes.
A sharp pain shot through Delphine's lower abdomen.
Her chest tightened. She forced herself to get up and stumbled into the bathroom.
Under the running water, she saw it—a shocking streak of red.
Her heart plummeted. Her hands and feet went ice-cold, like she'd been plunged into a freezer.
Trembling, she quickly cleaned herself, threw on her clothes, and staggered out of the suite. She ran toward the hospital without looking back.
---
Meanwhile, a taxi pulled up outside my apartment building.
I hurried upstairs. When I got home, Katya had already been dropped off.
She was sitting on the sofa with Isabella, watching cartoons.
When she saw me, she flew into my arms like a happy little bird. "Aunt Evelyn! I missed you so much!"
She pulled her little backpack over and dug out a cute keychain, handing it to me. "I got this for you when Daddy and I went to the amusement park."
Isabella held up her own keychain and waved it at me. "Katya got me one too."
I crouched down and pulled Katya's soft little body into my arms. "Thank you, Katya. I love it."
Isabella chimed in. "Mommy, Matthew also got Katya Legos. Come to our room and help us build them! We've been waiting for you!"
I felt exhausted. "Can Mommy play with you tomorrow? Today... I'm a little tired."
Both girls nodded obediently.
I returned to my room, leaned against the door, and took several deep breaths, trying to calm my racing heart.
Then I ran to the bathroom and washed my hands. Several times.
I'd already washed them at the club, but the images from that private room kept flooding back. Even now, my palms were burning.
I wasn't some inexperienced girl, but still—it was the first time I'd felt so close to William.
So close I'd almost become his.
---
That night, I'd just turned off the light when my phone rang.
I fumbled for it in the dark and answered.
"Hello, is this Mrs. Johnson?"
The nurse's voice was professionally calm, but it jolted me wide awake. "Mr. Johnson was just admitted for emergency surgery due to gastric bleeding. The situation is urgent. Please come to Silverline Hospital's emergency surgery department immediately to sign the consent forms."
My heart sank. My first thought was—is this another one of Michael's schemes?
Maybe to force me into compliance. Or another pathetic attempt to guilt me.
I swallowed the emotions churning inside me and said coldly, "I'll give you his mother's number. Call her."
"We already tried. No one answered." The nurse's tone grew more urgent. "You're the only person we could reach. You're his spouse, his next of kin. The surgery can't wait. Please come sign the forms now!"
The line went dead.
I stared at the phone, my hand trembling slightly.
After a moment of hesitation, I threw off the covers, grabbed my coat, and headed out the door.
Even if he'd hurt me, this was a matter of life and death. I couldn't just let him die.
---
On the way to Silverline Hospital, the city lights blurred past the window. My thoughts spiraled.
Soon, I arrived.
The smell of disinfectant hit me as I stepped into the emergency department. Outside the operating room, Chase was pacing anxiously.
The moment he spotted me, he rushed over like I was a lifeline. "Mrs. Johnson—"
I shot him a cold glare. "Call me Evelyn."
Chase's expression stiffened. He lowered his head awkwardly and quickly corrected himself. "Ms. Thomas, I'm so sorry. I called Winter countless times—no answer. The housekeeper said she left the Johnson Villa early this morning and hasn't been in contact since."
He paused, his tone growing more urgent. "There's no other option. You're the only one who can sign for Mr. Johnson. I didn't mean to disturb you."
I took a deep breath, suppressing the tangled emotions in my chest, and held out my hand to the nurse. "Give me the pen."
I signed immediately.
The nurse took the consent form and hurried into the operating room.
I turned to Chase, frowning. "Why did he drink himself into gastric bleeding?"
