Chapter 138
That night, Joshua stayed at the cemetery the whole time.
He held Aurora's tombstone, crying until he passed out several times, apologizing over and over until his voice went hoarse and he couldn't make a sound anymore, but the tears kept flowing.
Samuel couldn't get him to leave no matter what, so he just sat beside him to keep him company.
The two of them stayed there until dawn.
Even after daybreak, Joshua still couldn't bear to leave.
Looking at Aurora's photo on the tombstone, he reached up to gently touch it, his eyes still moist, his heart still aching.
He remembered when Aurora first saw him, she liked him so much and kept calling him daddy.
But back then Joshua thought she was someone else's child, and felt disgusted in his heart.
And when Aurora was badly hurt and couldn't remember anyone except him, only calling him daddy.
But what did he, as her father, do? For Ella's sake, he coldly pushed Aurora away.
Even when Ella knelt and cried begging him, he remained unmoved.
He was the one who killed his own daughter.
Joshua knelt there—however proud and cold he used to be, that's how much pain he felt now.
He knew apologizing couldn't bring Aurora back. For a moment, he even had the impulse to stay here for the rest of his life to keep Aurora company.
He buried his head and banged it hard against the tombstone, over and over.
Samuel watched, his heart clenching.
He quickly reached out to stop him, "Joshua, what are you doing? Have you lost your mind?"
Joshua said in a hoarse voice, "I should go be with her, apologize to her in person. She was so young, she shouldn't have died."
"It's all my fault. I don't deserve to be their father. I deserve to die."
Joshua hit his forehead until it was bloody and mangled, tears covering his face, but it still couldn't ease the grief in his heart.
At this moment, he really just wanted to die with Aurora.
Maybe it was from staying up all night, his emotions never getting relief, and hitting his head several times.
Joshua felt everything go black before his eyes and passed out.
Samuel quickly carried him back to the car and took him home.
He knew that when Joshua woke up, he would probably still blame himself and be in pain.
Perhaps only Ella and Dorian could comfort him.
After settling Joshua at Tranquil Villa, Samuel called Ella's number.
At this moment, Ella was still at the Lewis Villa, having breakfast with Dorian and Zachary.
Heath hadn't come back from staying at the hospital last night, and Mason had left early in the morning.
Ella picked up her phone, saw it was Samuel's number, put it on silent and left it aside, unwilling to answer.
Those two men—she never wanted to see them again in her life.
Zachary asked her, "Why aren't you answering?"
"Unimportant people."
Ella stroked Dorian's head and told him, "Dorian, you keep Zachary company for a while. Mommy has to go out for something, okay?"
Dorian nodded, "Okay, Mommy, you go ahead. I'll take good care of Mr. Baker."
Zachary added, "We could actually go to the hospital with you."
He assumed when Ella went out, she must be going to the hospital to visit the elders.
But Ella shook her head, "I'm not going to the hospital. I'm going to the police station."
She was going to see Scarlett.
To ask her why she refused to confess.
Did she still think she had a chance to get out, that Mason would save her?
She would never have a chance to turn things around in this lifetime.
Zachary understood and let Ella go.
After breakfast, Ella tidied up and drove out by herself.
But just as her car left the Lewis Villa, another car came and blocked her way.
And the person sitting in the driver's seat was Samuel.
Ella didn't know why this person would appear here.
Thinking of the call he made to her early in the morning.
Knowing he probably came to find her, Ella didn't have a good attitude. She rolled down the window and stuck her head out, saying rudely, "Please move your car. Don't block other people."
Samuel got out of the car and came to Ella's window, looking ashamed, "Ella, Joshua is sick. Can you go to Tranquil Villa to see him?"
Samuel had taken Joshua back early in the morning, bandaged his wounds, and given him medicine, but he remained unconscious.
Knowing Joshua would still break down emotionally when he woke up, he could only come to beg Ella.
But Ella didn't care at all, saying coldly, "Whether he lives or dies has nothing to do with me. I have nothing to do with him now. If you don't move your car, don't blame me for crashing into it."
"I'm begging you, okay?"
Samuel's attitude was very humble.
Ella looked at him and couldn't help laughing, "What are you to me? Just because you beg me, I have to do what you want?"
"Samuel, you and Joshua are both the same. The people I least want to see in this life are you two. Get lost."
Ella rolled up the window and started the engine.
She drove forward, ramming Samuel's car out of the way.
Samuel didn't try to stop her again.
This was the first time he'd seen Ella so rough and wild.
His luxury car was just destroyed like that.
But he didn't care.
Since Joshua hadn't woken up, he didn't dare tell Ella that they knew Dorian was Joshua's child.
The urgent matter now was to go back to Tranquil Villa to take care of Joshua.
In case he woke up and did something rash again.
At the police station, Ella saw Scarlett through the glass window.
She had completely lost her former arrogance and the air of a rich young lady. Perhaps because she still had injuries, she looked listless and pale.
Even walking with a limp, looking so weak she might fall at any moment.
She wasn't surprised to see Ella and sat down in front of the chair.
Ella picked up the phone and asked her, "I heard you won't confess?"
Scarlett laughed miserably, meeting Ella's gaze, "What did I do? Why should I confess?"
If she didn't admit to murder, she wouldn't get the death penalty.
As long as it wasn't the death penalty, she still had a chance to get out.
Even if Ella's evidence was presented to the police, at most it would just add a few more years to her sentence.
She wasn't afraid.
"Scarlett, you really don't know how to repent even when death is near. Let me tell you, even if you don't confess, you won't get out in this lifetime. I'll arrange for people to take good care of you inside."
Even if it meant torture, she would torture Scarlett to death.
But Scarlett didn't care and even laughed, "Really?"
"Maybe in less than a month, I'll be able to get out?"
Ella saw she had no fear, really didn't look scared at all.
For some reason, she felt uneasy.
Under what circumstances could Scarlett still be released?
Suddenly, Ella thought of something.
She asked Scarlett, "You're pregnant?"
Scarlett's expression changed, and she immediately denied it, "No."
"If you didn't know you were pregnant, how could you be so confident that you could get out?"
Ella thought she had guessed right.
Scarlett must be pregnant.
She absolutely couldn't let Scarlett be released on bail because of pregnancy.
No matter whose child it was, it couldn't be kept.
Consider it revenge for her Aurora.
"I'm not. I just think Mason loves me and will definitely find a way to save me."
Afraid that Ella would send people to hurt her in advance, Scarlett panicked a bit and quickly made excuses.
But Ella was already certain she was pregnant.
She stood up and said, "You'll never see Mason again, and Mason will never know you're pregnant with his child."
"Scarlett, you killed my Aurora and Grandpa. Wait to join them with you and your child."
Ella hung up the phone and turned to leave coldly.
Scarlett stood up, leaning on the counter, shouting at her frantically.
But no matter how much she shouted, even if she shouted herself hoarse, Ella didn't hear anything and would handle things as she should.
Ella went to find the police station doctor.
She asked about Scarlett's condition and found out she was indeed pregnant.
She also learned that in this situation, Scarlett had a chance to be released on bail, and would return to prison to serve her sentence after giving birth.
How could she possibly let Scarlett have another chance to get out?
A vicious woman like Scarlett didn't deserve to have a child either.
After arranging everything, Ella drove to the hospital.
When she arrived, Mason was by the bed keeping Rhea company.
She walked over and sat down beside them, saying directly, "Mom, Mason, I've asked the lawyer to file the lawsuit as soon as possible today. The trial should be held normally next month."
Ella specifically asked Mason, "Mason, how many years do you think would satisfy you?"
Before Mason could answer, Rhea said angrily, "At least twenty years. That kind of woman, ungrateful and cruel—I really regret every penny spent on her all these years."
Someone who would kidnap and try to kill her own adoptive mother.
If the court gave her the death penalty, that would be even better.
Mason hung his head, not wanting to speak for a long time.
When Ella pressed him, he still couldn't help speaking up for Scarlett, "Ella, Mom, I know Scarlett hurt you both deeply, but she lived in this family for so many years after all. I still have some feelings for her. How about..."
"At this point, you're still thinking about her?"
Rhea was furious, her face darkening.
Mason didn't deny it, "Mom, I really love her."
"But I also know she committed an unforgivable mistake. I'm not saying to plead for her, but could she get a lighter sentence, maybe ten years?"
Ten years—Scarlett would be out before she was forty.
He was willing to wait.
Rhea was about to get angry again, but then she saw Ella smile.
She suddenly fell silent, looking at Ella in confusion.
Ella said calmly, "No wonder you made me kneel on the ground and kowtow to her back then."
"No wonder you almost killed me because of her."
"I can see you really love her. Your relationship is truly touching."
Then Ella's face suddenly turned cold, her eyes like knives, staring fiercely at Mason, full of hatred and cruelty, "But Mason, you listen to me—she killed my daughter, she killed Grandpa. I will never let her come out alive."
"If you dare go see her even once more, I won't let you off either."
Ella really felt that this kind of brother wasn't worth acknowledging.
Ella left with a heart full of anger.
"Ella."
Mason called out once but didn't chase after her.
Rhea, hearing Ella's words, was so angry she slapped Mason, "You made Ella kneel and kowtow to Scarlett back then? And almost killed Ella?"
Mason admitted his fault and lowered his head to take Rhea's slap.
Rhea hated him so much, afraid that because of this, Ella would become distant from them. In her anger, she grabbed Mason and hit him again.
