Chapter 70
Walter's eyes darkened, and he frowned as he looked at Pearl. What was she doing in Silverlight City so early?
"Walter, please help me," Pearl sobbed, wanting Walter to help her.
Walter glanced at Nora and immediately understood. Pearl had come to cause trouble for Nora.
Instinctively, he quickly walked in front of Nora and asked quietly, "Did she hurt you?"
Nora kept her head down and didn't look up.
Walter's expression instantly turned cold as he looked back at Pearl. "Is this how the Clark family raises their daughter?"
Pearl stared at Walter in shock, disbelief written all over her face. "Walter, I'm your fiancée. You're accusing me without even asking what happened. She seduced you first—why can't I hit her!"
Nora remained silent, never saying a word.
"You need to think about what you've done, or no one can help you." Walter's cold gaze warned Pearl. He would settle accounts with her later.
"Walter! Nora, tell the police we were just joking around! Nora! You better watch out when I get out!" Pearl was furious and still threatening Nora.
Walter's face was dark as he let the police take Pearl away, then took Nora's hand, planning to take her to the hospital.
But Nora pulled her hand away, her eyes reddening as she looked at him.
Walter hadn't denied his relationship with Pearl, which meant he acknowledged the marriage arrangement between him and the Clark family. Pearl would eventually become his wife in name. If she continued to be with Walter, all the humiliation she suffered today would be her own fault.
Walter paused and looked back at Nora.
Nora said nothing.
"Mr. Wood, look at Pearl's Twitter." Royce's voice trembled with anger. Five years ago, they had bullied Nora like this.
Nora was the victim—how could Pearl have the nerve to post that video?
Walter gripped his phone and crushed the screen.
Idiot!
If the Clark family weren't still valuable, someone as stupid as Pearl...
"Did Mr. Smith call the police?" Throwing the phone to Royce, Walter glanced at Michael.
Michael didn't respond, just stood to the side looking at Nora. "Think carefully. Come with me, or go with him."
By taking this step, Nora had pushed herself to the edge of a cliff.
Pearl would be locked up for a few months at most, and when she got out, she still wouldn't let Nora go.
Besides, by getting Pearl arrested, the Clark family wouldn't let her go either.
By taking this step today, Nora had to choose between Walter and Michael as her protector.
Otherwise, it would be hard for her to survive.
"Mr. Smith, I'll protect my own people." Walter frowned.
Michael said nothing, just looked at Nora, waiting for her choice and decision.
"I'll take you to the hospital." Walter led Nora away.
After a long silence, Nora chose to follow Walter.
Michael frowned, his expression dark.
"Nora's not stupid." David breathed a sigh of relief, afraid Nora would choose Michael.
If Nora had really left with Michael, it would have caused him so much trouble.
"She knows staying in Silverlight City is safer than going back to Emerald City." David said proudly, thinking Nora was smart.
Michael's face looked terrible as he gave David a cold look. "I think you'd be perfect for staying in Silverlight City too. Why don't you go be Walter's assistant?"
David shuddered and quickly caught up with Michael. "Mr. Smith, you're the only one in my heart and eyes!"
Michael ignored David and got in the car with a dark mood.
For some reason, he felt a bit angry—angry that Nora had chosen Walter over him.
Just because Walter was Samuel's biological father?
Tapping his fingers lightly on the seat, Michael's mind kept returning to Nora's pale, bloodless face.
She said her left ear couldn't hear anymore.
She said she had tried to kill herself many times.
Taking a deep breath, Michael looked at David. "Look into what Nora went through during those five years in prison."
"Mr. Smith, why are we still investigating her? Is it necessary?" David didn't have a brain at all.
Feeling Michael's murderous gaze, David quietly lowered his head and drove. "Yes, Mr. Smith."
Michael rubbed his temples. He really should consider finding another assistant.
On the way to the hospital, Nora sat in Walter's car without saying a word.
"Does it hurt?" Walter held an ice pack, personally helping Nora ice her cheek.
Nora tried to dodge, but Walter deliberately trapped her in his arms, gently wiping the blood from the corner of Nora's mouth. "Pearl hurt my person—I'll definitely make her pay a price."
Walter tried to comfort Nora.
Nora's eyes showed no emotion as she remained silent.
Walter held Nora's small, delicate, bloodless face and looked at it for a long time. "Nora... I told you, you can make demands of me. What do you want me to do?"
After a long silence, Nora's voice was hoarse. "I won't settle easily. I want a medical examination for injuries."
Walter took a deep breath, finally understanding that Nora was serious.
She wasn't planning to let Pearl off easily.
"Okay." Walter agreed.
Nora weakly spoke again. "She's your fiancée."
Walter didn't deny it.
"If news gets out about bullying and assault, especially involving a criminal case, it will look very bad for Mountain Construction Group and your Wood family." Nora laid it out upfront.
"Are you thinking about me?" Walter smiled, inexplicably in a good mood.
Nora didn't deny it and spoke again. "If I were you, I'd use the public opinion to break off the engagement with the Clark family."
Nora's voice was hoarse but firm.
If Walter was willing to break off the engagement now, it would be a fatal blow to the Clark family and Pearl.
Nora was taking revenge.
Walter could see that Nora was using him to get back at Pearl.
Taking a deep breath, Walter looked at Nora with burning eyes. "Nori, I can give you anything."
Nora's eyes reddened as her clenched hands slowly relaxed.
She smiled, both mocking and helpless.
"But the marriage between our families isn't as simple as you think." Clearly, Walter didn't agree to break off the engagement.
Nora lowered her eyes and smiled.
This was also the chance she was giving Walter.
The last chance.
"Break off the engagement and cut ties with the Clark family, and I can stay with you." Even as Nora said this, she found it laughable. A dirty woman like her—Walter would probably get tired of her in a few days.
But she had no other bargaining chips left, except this body.
"Nori, you can't ask me to marry you." Walter leaned back weakly in his seat, his voice low.
Except for marriage, he really could give Nora anything.
"I promise I won't let Pearl and the Clark family off easily. I won't help her this time either. However the police handle it, she deserves it. But the Wood family and the Clark family can't break ties right now. Give me two years, and I promise I'll give you a satisfactory answer, okay?"
Walter reached out, trying to hold Nora's hand.
Nora jerked back as if electrocuted and looked out the window helplessly.
