Chapter 238
Chapter 238
"Evelyn!" James panicked and scooped up Evelyn, yelling at Nora with rage. "If anything happens to her,I won’t let you get away with it."
Nora looked shocked and glanced around. "I dodged so fast, and he's still trying to pin this on me. You two are my witnesses. I never laid a hand on her."
Michael stood frozen, equally shocked by James’s audacity. "So if Evelyn chokes on water and dies, you'd still point the finger at Nora?"
Atticus had witnessed the whole scene and flashed Nora a thumbs up. "Classic attempt to scam you. I'll testify for you."
"She wouldn’t have gotten so worked up if she hadn’t spotted Nora," James snarled.
Nora sighed. Though she was used to James's unreasonable behavior, she still felt helpless. "This is kindergarten parents' day. Did I personally invite any of you here to see me? Whoever told Evelyn to come here. Go blame them, not me."
She pointed straight at Claire.
Claire was already trembling, tears streaming down her face as she covered it with both hands. "Honey, I didn't, I swear."
"You useless idiot! You can't do anything right!" Claire's husband cursed furiously.
"I didn't," Claire sobbed, shaking her head.
"Nora, Evelyn'scondition is getting worse every day. We've been holding off because you promised to donate your kidney. If anything happens to Evelyn, you can't escape responsibility." James didn't forget to throw dirt on Nora.
"If you really cared about her health, you’d find her a proper donor instead of dragging me into this guilt trip. She’s already unconscious—you should be taking her to the hospital instead of wasting time here." Nora was truly angry at James.
What kind of people were these?
How had she ever fall for James?
Stupidity really was contagious.
James froze for a moment, then snatched Evelyn up and ran outside.
"A perfectly good person, but he's an idiot," Atticus sighed. "The Smith family genes clearly skipped a generation."
Michael glanced at Atticus. "The Fields family genes are flawless—some are emotionally blind, some are literally blind, and then there's you, the resident playboy who flirts with anything that moves."
Atticus looked surprised. "I forgot about you. You're also from the Smith family, but your genes are way better than that guy's, right Nori?"
Nora held her child and stayed far away, not wanting to get caught in the crossfire.
"Mr. Fields, Mr. Smith, I'm sorry." Claire approached with swollen, red-rimmed eyes. “I’m sorry. I completely misunderstood. Please forgive me."
Atticus didn't even want to acknowledge Claire.
Michael ignored her too.
Claire ran over to Nora in a panic. "Nori, for the sake of our high-school friendship, please help me. Just say something to them for me. I really didn't mean it."
Nora shook her head. "I won't help you. No one should help you. You brought this on yourself with your arrogance. I can't help you."
Claire cried anxiously. "Nora, don't just stand by and watch me suffer."
"I'm not standing by—you're beyond help. I'm not the Virgin Mary." Nora muttered quietly and took Samuel, Joseph, and Milo to gather with the teacher.
Claire turned to her husband in terror.
"You embarrassment! Take the kid and get out of here!" Claire's husband was furious and could only get them out of there first.
Airport.
"Mom, you came back for a visit—why so much luggage? Planning to stay long-term?" Zander looked at Juliet, who had brought three huge suitcases.
"Can't find my daughter, so I'm not going back for now. When I find her, we'll see." Juliet said with a smile.
She had a feeling she'd find her daughter soon.
"Mom, you're looking good lately," Zander raised an eyebrow.
"The fortune teller in Chinatown told me I’d locate my daughter this year." Juliet was getting older and had started believing in feng shui and fortune.
Even if what the fortune teller said was just psychological comfort, she believed it.
"Mom, that fortune teller is really accurate," Zander agreed.
Juliet smiled. "Out of my three sons, you’ve always been the smooth talker."
Zander smiled faintly. "Right? One of them has low emotional intelligence, the other has low IQ."
"Yes, yes, you have high emotional and intellectual intelligence. You're the only single one in the family. At least Daryl has had rumored girlfriends, and Atticus's ex-girlfriends could form here to the next country. But you? Not a peep, day after day." Juliet didn't want to call Zander out.
Zander coughed awkwardly and looked away. "Someone as excellent as me—fate comes later."
"Take care of your mother. I need to take this call." His phone rang—it was Daryl calling.
Zander had his assistant look after Juliet while he went aside to answer.
Suddenly,a figure dashed forward, snatched Juliet’s handbag, and sprinted away.
"Stop, thief!"
"Give the bag back!"
Out of nowhere, a figure appeared, grabbed the bag, and struggled with the thief.
The assistant rushed over to intervene and protected both the bag and the good Samaritan.
But the thief got away.
"Has public safety really declined this much?" Zander hung up and ran over, looking at Juliet. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Go check on that young lady." Juliet pointed to the girl who had helped and told Zander to check on her.
Zander quickly ran over. "Miss, thank you so much. Are you okay?"
The other person smiled with a pale face and shook her head. "I'm fine, just a small injury."
Zander glanced and noticed blood on her hand. "Thank you so much. You seem to be hurt. Let me take you to the hospital."
"I'm fine. It's not from the bag snatcher." She hid her hand behind her back and lowered her head, wanting to leave.
"What's your name?" Zander asked.
"My name is Aria." Aria turned back and smiled at Zander, her eyes red as she tried to leave. but something about her seemed off.
Zander frowned and grabbed Aria. "Your injury..."
Looking at her wrist, Zander gasped.
Juliet also ran over and looked at the wound. It was clearly a self-inflicted cut on her wrist.
Though not deep, it was obvious she had hurt herself.
"So young—why would you hurt yourself like this?" Juliet asked with regret.
"It's nothing." Aria choked up and hid the wound.
"You helped my mother. If you have any difficulties, you can tell us. Maybe I can help you." Zander said politely.
"No need, thank you. You can't help me." Aria kept her head down, cradling her wrist. "My parents favor my sister. My fiancé also chose to abandon me. I just feel like I'm someone the world could do without."
"That's not true. Parents love their children. Maybe it's just some small oversights. They're both your biological children—how could they be biased?" Juliet tried to comfort Aria.
"I'm not their biological child. My parents only found out a few years ago."
Both Zander and Juliet froze, exchanging a stunned glance.
"You're not their biological child?" Juliet took a deep breath. "Miss, how old are you?"
"Twenty-seven." Aria shook her head. "I'm sorry, I need to go."
With that, Aria ran off.
Juliet glanced at Zander. "Look into it."
