Chapter 124
"Nora, get out of here!"
"You're disgusting! How dare you stay at the Smith Group? What gives you the right to stay at the Smith Group? Get out of here!"
Evelyn was still shouting outside. Since she was James's fiancée, the company executives and security guards didn't dare to stop her.
Besides, everyone knew Evelyn was sick. Anyone who messed with her would be in trouble. If someone touched her and she fainted, no one could take responsibility for that.
Nora sat anxiously in her chair, nervously picking at her fingers.
She looked up at Michael several times, but he acted like he couldn't hear anything, still busy with his work.
But clearly, Evelyn wouldn't give up until she saw her.
"Mr. Smith, she's affecting your work. I'll go..." Nora was a bit scared, afraid that Michael would think she always caused trouble.
"David can handle this small matter." Michael didn't even look up, waving Nora over. "Come here."
"Okay." Nora quickly got up and walked to Michael's side.
"This is the list Gia gave me. This person, deal with him." Michael circled a name on the paper. It was the director of the Smith Group's investment department, named Kurt Lowe.
This person was forty-eight years old and one of Nolan's most trusted people.
The Smith Group was a highly centralized company. Although Nolan, as chairman, wasn't currently involved in management, the real power was in his hands.
If Michael wanted to sideline Nolan, he had to slowly replace all his people.
The investment department reported directly to Michael, so Kurt was basically a checkpoint.
"If Gia gave you this list, that means Kurt is Luna's person. That's really tricky." Nora held the list, looking thoughtful. "This person is also an old employee of the company. I've investigated the supervisors of various departments. Kurt has good relationships in the company, and it's hard to find any dirt or mistakes on him."
"Is it difficult?" Michael leaned back in his chair.
Was he giving Nora too big a task right from the start?
Nora was nervous but also a bit happy. Although Michael was asking her to take down a final-boss-level character right away, at least it proved Michael trusted her and believed in her abilities. "It's not difficult. Just give me some time."
Michael looked at Nora for a while, then smiled. "Your stutter comes and goes?"
Michael noticed that Nora only didn't stutter when she was seriously working.
Teased by Michael, Nora's face instantly turned red. She lowered her head and stammered, "No, no."
"What's your idea? Do you need my help?" Michael wanted to hear Nora's thoughts.
"I need to learn about this person's private life first, do some investigation." Nora wanted Michael to help her. She couldn't hire a private detective.
"Here's the information." Michael gave Nora all of Kurt's personal information.
Nora looked at Michael in surprise. It seemed he'd wanted to get rid of Kurt for a long time.
"David investigated it, but he can't solve it for me." Michael really wasn't putting David down. His ability was limited to investigating Kurt's private life.
"Everyone has their specialty. Assistant Jones has his abilities. We, we need to work together to complete the task better." Nora nervously spoke up for David, taking the information back to her seat to study it carefully.
Michael propped his head up, watching Nora, playing with his pen with interest.
He really had found a treasure.
"Two-thirty this afternoon, leave for the airport on time. Have you prepared everything you need for the business trip?" Michael was worried that Nora wouldn't be used to traveling for work for the first time.
"Mr. Smith, everything's ready. I've already had your suits sent to the hotel there in advance. There will be someone to dry and iron them. I've matched the ties and watches, with backups. If you don't like them, you can change them." Nora stood up, like a student reporting homework to a teacher.
Looking at the time, Nora spoke again. "The gift for Lyle has also been air-shipped in advance. When you arrive, you can go straight to the appointment."
"Mr. Smith." Outside the door, David took a deep breath and walked in. "Outside, Mr. James Smith's fiancée has gone crazy."
Michael ignored David. He just wanted to ask Nora if she had prepared his things. "What gift did you prepare for Lyle?"
"Fresh Blue Crab." Nora had investigated Lyle's preferences.
The pen Michael was spinning dropped on the desk. "What?"
Blue Crab?
Would Lyle be short of Blue Crab?
"You prepared Blue Crab for Lyle?" David was also shocked. "You might think Blue Crab is something good, but actually it's pretty ordinary. There's still time, let me prepare something instead."
David was somewhat reproachful, thinking Nora could prepare something good.
Michael just smiled and said nothing.
Nora wanted to explain, but opened her mouth and said nothing.
"Mr. Smith, Evelyn came to make a scene, and no one dares to mess with her." David was a bit troubled, looking at Michael for help.
"I'll go handle it." Nora walked out guiltily. She didn't know how she had offended Evelyn to make her come to the company and cause such a scene.
Michael glared at David, got up, and followed her out.
"Nora, you've already stolen twenty years of my life. What more do you want? Won't you let me go? What will it take for you to leave the Smith Group and stay away from my boyfriend?" Seeing Nora come out, Evelyn shouted emotionally.
Nora stood there, a bit confused.
There were quite a few people watching, all talking among themselves. Since this Nora came to the company, it had really been really lively.
"Evelyn!" Aiden and James also rushed over, anxiously trying to calm her down. "Evelyn, don't make a scene. Let me explain when we get back, okay?"
James hugged Evelyn, softly comforting her. "Don't get excited. I can explain when we get back."
Evelyn's eyes burned as she stared at Nora. "Do I have to kneel down and beg you? For these twenty years, you were in my home, using my identity, enjoying the best education, the best life. And me? Do you know what kind of life I lived? Do you know how Jasper treated me?"
Evelyn cried and recounted the pain of these years, listing Nora's crimes one by one.
"You stole my life, stole my boyfriend. How else do you want to destroy me?"
Nora stood quietly in place, letting her vent.
"James, what does she want from me? Does she really want me to die?" Evelyn cried out of control, turning to jump out the window.
Aiden anxiously grabbed Evelyn, looking angrily at James. "Do something!"
James rubbed his forehead, standing there irritably. After a moment, he looked back at Nora. "Apologize to Evelyn. Ask her to forgive you."
Nora didn't speak, just looked at James.
James looked away. "You owe her. You can never repay it in your lifetime. If anyone should die, it's you. Apologize to her."
"When your mom was pregnant with you, did she not get enough nutrition?" Behind Nora, Michael leaned against the doorframe, tugging at his tie.
James really made him laugh.
