Chapter 40
Outside the villa.
The nanny was chatting happily with a few people, completely ignoring whether Nora lived or died.
A black sedan pulled in, and the nanny quickly straightened up in fright. "Mr. Michael Smith?"
Why was Michael coming back at this time?
Normally, Michael never came back at this hour.
Michael got out of the car with a child following behind him.
The nanny's face went pale with fear - wasn't this the little bastard that Nora had given birth to?
"Mr. Michael Smith, why are you..."
"Where's Nora?" Michael asked in a deep voice.
"Haven't seen her." The nanny quickly shook her head.
Samuel looked toward the backyard and, hearing the sound of smashing and crashing, ran in that direction.
The first time he came to the Smith Villa, they had locked him and Nora in there.
"Samuel!" David was still worried about Samuel and followed after him.
The warehouse was locked from the outside, but there was clearly someone inside.
"Open the door!" David shouted.
The nanny's hands kept shaking in fear, not daring to open it.
"Can't you hear?" Michael's tone was ominous.
"Mr. James Smith said not to touch it." The nanny quickly found an excuse.
Michael's face darkened - he knew something had gone wrong.
He strode over and kicked the warehouse door open.
Gerald rushed out in a frenzy, eyes bloodshot, holding a stick - clearly he'd been provoked and lost control again.
"Nora!" Michael ran inside, frowning at the dust-filled warehouse.
In the corner, Nora was nearly buried under debris, her breathing weak.
She no longer had the strength to respond.
Samuel ran toward Nora.
Michael's heart tightened. He quickly lifted the wooden boards off Nora and gasped at the sight of her barely alive and covered in blood.
Samuel stood still, the stuffed toy in his hand falling to the ground.
David instinctively covered Samuel's eyes.
As a five-year-old child, Samuel's first reaction to seeing Nora lying in a pool of blood wasn't to cry or make a fuss, but to quietly tear up.
This reaction made David, a grown man, feel heartbroken, and even his tone became gentler when speaking to Samuel. "Samuel, mommy's fine. Come outside with me, okay?"
Samuel was silent for a long time before asking quietly, "Is my mommy going to die?"
He asked so calmly.
"Why would you ask that? Of course not." David picked up Samuel and walked out, not caring if Samuel was dirty.
"Mommy said daddy is a hero who went to outer space to fight monsters. Mommy said she might have to go too."
David's steps faltered. He looked back at Michael carrying Nora out.
Michael hadn't said a word, his face looking terrible.
David knew Michael was very angry right now.
Screams came from the yard.
David walked out with Samuel and saw Gerald out of control, beating the nanny Beatrice hard with a stick.
"You bitch, trying to hurt me, don't even think about it. I'll beat you to death."
"I'll kill you!"
Beatrice was beaten bloody, crying and begging for help, but no one dared approach Gerald in this state.
If the security guards hadn't arrived in time, Beatrice would have been beaten to death.
Michael got in the car with Nora and gave David a cold look. "Call the police. Find out who locked Nora and Gerald in the warehouse. There are cameras in the yard - use them as evidence of attempted murder. Get a lawyer and file charges."
Beatrice's face went deathly pale as she cried and begged for mercy. "Please spare me, it wasn't me, it wasn't me! It was Ms. Evelyn Thomas. Ms. Evelyn Thomas said Gerald had mental problems and locked him in the warehouse with Nora. It has nothing to do with me, please spare me!"
Michael gave Beatrice a cold glance. "Since Evelyn is the mastermind, go tell that to the police."
With that, Michael closed the car door.
Nearby, three bodyguards couldn't hold Gerald down as he kept yelling that he was going to beat Beatrice to death.
Nora weakly opened her eyes and looked out the car window, her gaze deep.
Michael stared at Nora with interest for a long time.
Evelyn's purpose in having Nora and Gerald locked in the warehouse was very clear - it definitely wasn't just about taking Nora's life.
Gerald was nearly forty with no woman, and the reason he'd violently hurt people multiple times was rape.
This Evelyn was truly vicious.
However, looking at Nora, though injured, her clothes were intact with no signs of assault.
This showed she really wasn't as timid and unable to fight back as she appeared.
Besides, when Gerald's bipolar disorder kicked in and he ran out of the warehouse, he went straight for Beatrice and beat her up.
"I'm very curious - what did you say to Gerald?" Michael was becoming more and more interested in Nora.
