Chapter 100
Company cafeteria.
It was lunchtime, and no one called Nora to eat.
Nora wasn't familiar with the company either.
Actually, according to normal procedure, HR should have arranged for someone to show Nora around the company first, but Gia didn't think Nora would last long at the company, so she deliberately made things difficult for her.
"Why didn't you go eat?" Outside the door, a kind-hearted female employee asked.
Nora glanced at the time and asked quietly, "Excuse me, where is the company cafeteria?"
The female employee looked at the time. "At this hour, there's probably nothing left to eat if you go now. Didn't HR show you around the company?"
Nora shook her head.
"Let me take you there then." Just as the female employee was about to take Nora to the cafeteria, another employee deliberately pulled her aside.
"Why are you bothering with her? Don't you know she got in through connections? I heard she only has a high school diploma, and she has a criminal record. Stay away from her - I heard she's a thief."
The kind-hearted female employee looked back at Nora in shock. A high school diploma could get you into the Smith Group?
"Sorry, I just remembered I have some work to do. You can ask someone else." That female employee made an excuse and ran off.
Nora lowered her eyes, looking down at her fingers. She had expected this.
Walking down the hallway, Nora found that even the cleaning staff wouldn't talk to her. Everyone avoided her like the plague. Wherever she passed, gossip followed.
Nora had already guessed - this was their warning to her.
"Excuse me, where is the cafeteria?" Nora saw a cleaner in the restroom and asked carefully.
The cleaning lady held her mop and mopped the floor hard, as if she didn't see Nora at all.
Nora quickly stepped back, feeling a bit hurt, and stopped talking.
Nora wandered around the company by herself. By the time she found the cafeteria, the staff were already cleaning up.
"Are you new here?" A cafeteria server saw Nora standing alone at the door and asked quietly.
Nora nodded.
"Lunch is at 11:40. It's almost time to go back to work now. Come earlier next time." The server reminded her.
Nora nodded and turned to leave.
"If you're hungry, go out of the company and walk back about 300 feet. There's an alley with places selling lunch. You can check it out." The server added.
Nora thanked her and headed out of the company.
"That's Nora. Remember the real and fake heiress case from six years ago? It was all over social media - that's her."
"She's the one who stole the real heiress's life for over twenty years. A thief with a criminal record, and only a high school diploma."
"How does she have the nerve to come to the Smith Group?"
Nora kept her head down.
These people weren't even trying to hide their words from her.
"I heard she's pretty good at serving men. Every heir in Emerald City - there's not a man who hasn't been with her."
Nora's steps froze for a moment, but she didn't turn around.
There was no point in explaining.
The moment she tried to prove her innocence, she was already considered dirty.
"I heard David recommended her. Did she sleep with David too?"
Nora quickly walked out of the company, feeling her fingers trembling.
Actually, she was used to these rumors. If Gia wanted to use this method to make her quit, it was still pretty low-level.
She bought a cup of milk in the alley and glanced back at the Smith Group building.
This building was really tall.
A height that most people could never reach in their lifetime.
"Nori? This is Yasmin. Do you remember me?" Someone called Nora - it was Yasmin, the receptionist from the Silverlight City club.
Nora remembered. Yasmin was very kind.
"Yasmin, what happened?" Nora asked quietly.
Her phone number was new. There was no way Yasmin could know it. Of the people at the club, only Savannah knew.
Nora had changed her phone and contacted Savannah on her own.
"Savannah - Savannah asked me to call you. Something happened to her. Can you come see her?" Yasmin was crying.
Nora's breath caught. Her fingers slowly tightened around the phone. "What happened to her?"
"That regular customer Savannah always took care of, Hugo Graves - his wife came and had people beat up Savannah. Savannah was pregnant and didn't even know it. She's bleeding badly. Even if they save her, they can't save her uterus."
Yasmin's voice was shaking as she cried.
"Savannah had nothing going on with Hugo. They were innocent. Savannah has a boyfriend, one of the managers at our club. The baby was that manager's too. When Savannah got beaten, that guy actually went into hiding."
Nora took a deep breath.
She actually knew Savannah had a boyfriend. Even though Savannah didn't say anything, during those few days living together, Nora had noticed.
"Did you call the police?" Nora looked up and asked numbly.
Actually, she knew very well that calling the police wouldn't help.
"The other side has connections. We can't mess with them." Yasmin kept crying on the phone. "Nori, I don't know what to do. I don't have enough money for the medical bills. The club people won't help either. They won't cover it. Nori, you know Mr. Wood. Can you get Mr. Wood to make a call? Please, can you ask Mr. Wood?"
"One phone call from him could fix everything." Yasmin sounded so helpless as she cried.
"Which hospital?" Nora's voice was shaking.
Ask Walter?
"Silverlight City Central Hospital."
"I'll figure something out." Nora crouched on the ground, gripping her hands helplessly.
What could she figure out?
Today was her first day at the Smith Group. If she just asked for leave and left, she probably wouldn't even pass the probation period.
If she left now, Michael would be so disappointed.
But if she didn't go, what would happen to Savannah?
Savannah had saved Nora's life.
Besides asking Walter, she had no other option.
Ripple Court Hotel.
Walter sat on the sofa, looking at Royce. "Nora isn't living with Jasper and the others?"
Rubbing his temples, Walter felt irritated. "You can't even find one person?"
"Mr. Wood, Emerald City is Michael's territory. If he doesn't want us to find someone..." Royce sighed.
The phone rang.
Walter picked up the phone and glanced at it - an unknown number. "Who is it?"
"Walter."
On the other end of the phone was Nora.
"Nori? Where are you?" Walter sat up straight. He was genuinely worried about Nora.
"Can you help me with something?" Nora asked hesitantly.
"Where are you?" Walter just wanted to know where Nora was, whether she was safe.
"Savannah is at Silverlight City Central Hospital. She needs money to save her life right now. Please help me. I'll pay you back." Nora's voice was urgent.
Walter frowned and glanced at Royce, signaling him to handle it. "Don't worry, I've already sent Royce to deal with it. Where are you? I'll take you back to Silverlight City."
Nora was silent. "I found a job. Today's my first day. I can't leave right now. I get off at 5:30. I'll figure out a way."
"I'll handle Savannah's situation. I'll wait until 5:30 and take you to see her." Walter wanted to use this chance to bring Nora back to Silverlight City.
"Okay." Nora agreed. "Thank you."
After hanging up, Walter looked at Royce. "What's going on with Savannah?"
Royce had also hung up his phone, looking a bit panicked. "Hugo's wife came to the club and got into a fight with Savannah. Savannah fell down the stairs. She was pregnant and is bleeding heavily."
Walter frowned and rubbed his temples.
He had deliberately leaked Savannah's situation to Hugo's wife, thinking that if Savannah got into trouble, she would definitely contact Nora, and Nora would have to come to him for help.
He didn't expect such a serious accident to happen.
"Handle it right away!" Walter felt irritated and kicked the table in frustration.
