Chapter-58

Her eyes searched mine, and I saw the curiosity and concern that bled into the depths of hers before she suggested gently, "Why don't you tell me about growing up under your PawPaw?"

The onslaught of memories that flooded my mind surprised me. The warmth and security I'd felt as a child. The wisdom he had imparted, and the way he had taught me to be true to my beliefs.

"PawPaw was... everything," I murmured, emotion thick in my voice. "He stepped up when my father passed. He took on the role that was never meant to be his again. He was strong, fair, and loved by the entire pack."

Elysia nodded, her eyes never straying from my face. "And what about Marcus?" she prompted.

I took a deep breath, the anger rising again as I thought of my brother. "I always suspected he had something to do with PawPaw's death. But I could never prove it," I admitted, the words tasting bitter on my tongue. "I can see now that it was his actions, his manipulation, that made me doubt my own ability to be an Alpha. After my sister, Kira, disappeared, I didn't think I could handle the burden of leading the pack and turned everything over to Marcus."

Elysia reached out, touching my arm. "And what happened after that?" she asked, her voice soft.

"He turned into a monster," I told her, unable to keep the anger from my voice. "The pack suffered because of my weakness. I turned a blind eye to what I could see even as children, was a cruelty within Marcus."

She squeezed my hand, her eyes never leaving mine. "And now?"

"Now, I'm trying to fix it," I said, determined. "And to do that, I need to know if you can ever forgive me for the way I've acted toward you?"

Her eyes searched mine, and for a moment, I saw a flicker of something that gave me hope. Then she crushed the hope as she stated, "Honestly, I don't know."

ELYSIA

I peered at Alex, seeing the sincerity in his eyes. But I still didn't feel being his mate was the road I was to travel. In a lot of ways, we were strangers that had this weird connection. Did that give us the necessary material to become lifetime partners? I didn't think so. It took me weeks to decide to come see Alex. I'd heard he'd closed the club. The news had traveled through the whispers of the city's shadows, reaching my ears with the same quiet efficiency as the gossip about his brother's tyrannical rule had once done. I knew it was a significant move for him, one that spoke volumes of the internal battle he'd been fighting since the day I had walked out of his life.

As I had approached the mansion with trepidation, the grandeur of its architecture seemingly mocked my doubt. The gates that had once been a symbol of the divide between his two lives now stood open, an invitation to the new chapter he was attempting to write.

The garden was as I remembered it, the flowers blooming in a riot of color, a stark contrast to the bleakness that had consumed me since my departure. The scent of jasmine filled the air, and it was in this place, under the watchful eyes of the moon, that I had found myself drawn to him, unable to resist the siren's call of his dominance even as his words resonated over in my head. '"Now, I'm trying to fix it," he'd said. 'And to do that, I need to know if you can ever forgive me for the way I've acted toward you?'

My eyes had searched his, not quite sure exactly what I was looking for. Then, knowing deep in my gut I couldn't give him the answer he wanted, I murmured, "Honestly, I don't know."

ALEX

"I mean it. I want to fix this, Elysia," I murmured, the words barely audible. "I want to make things right between us."

Her gaze never wavered, and for a heart-stopping moment, I thought she would turn and leave again. But instead, she took a step closer, her hand reaching out to cup my cheek. The warmth of her touch was a balm to my soul, and I leaned into it, my eyes closing as a wave of relief washed over me.

"Then prove it," she said, her voice filled with a challenge. "Show me the man you truly are. Not the facade of the man you have presented to me."

The words were a spark, igniting a fire within me. I knew then that no matter the obstacles before us, I would move heaven and earth to regain her trust and love.

Elysia's hand remained on my face, her thumb brushing against my lower lip. The contact was electric, and it was all I could do to keep from pulling her into my arms and kissing her with the desperation that had built up within me.

But I knew better. This wasn't the time for passion or declarations. This was the moment for truth and understanding.

"I'll do whatever it takes," I said, my voice low and sincere.

Her eyes searched mine, looking for the sincerity in my words. And when she finally nodded, I felt a weight lift from my shoulders.

"Let's start with tomorrow," she said.

The promise in her voice was like the first light of dawn after a long, dark night. It was a beacon of hope, guiding me through the stormy waters of regret and doubt.
