Chapter 88

Chapter 88

Clair and Charlotte have been engaged for a long time!

Hearing this, my heart skipped a beat.

I know myself well enough to understand that the woman who ends up marrying Clair must match his family background and status. It could never be someone ordinary like me with no connections.

But I never imagined that person would be Charlotte.

Fortunately, Charlotte doesn't know about my relationship with Clair. Otherwise, her tactics against me wouldn't be so simple - she might even have me thrown in jail.

Many rich kids, with their wealthy and powerful families, act like they're above the law.

Suddenly, I remembered that on my birthday night, the villa's butler called Clair, saying a young lady was looking for him. Now that I think about it carefully, the butler was talking about Charlotte.

And that day was Charlotte's birthday too.

Earlier, there were rumors that her boyfriend was going to propose to Charlotte at her birthday party, and Clair was the rumored boyfriend.

I had mentioned it to Clair, yet he pretended to know nothing about it.

Back then, I must have looked quite ridiculous to him, right?

He'll eventually return to his world and marry a woman of equal social standing.

The car finally stopped in a desolate place. When I came to my senses, it was obvious that Zoey had deliberately had the driver bring me here.

I was angry but helpless. I could only walk toward the nearest bus stop.

Fortunately, not long after I got there, a bus slowly pulled up.

Half an hour later, I got off the bus, but I still needed to walk ten minutes to get back to my apartment.

Just then, it started to rain.

The rain got heavier and heavier.

Since I'd already walked halfway, I had no choice but to rush back to the apartment in the rain.

By the time I got home, I was soaked through.

What terrible luck!

I went to my room to change clothes when the doorbell rang outside.

Who could it be?

Clair has a key and wouldn't need to ring the doorbell.

Could it be Mike or Cathy?

I walked over, puzzled and looked through the peephole. I got a shock - it was two uniformed police officers. They seemed to sense I was behind the door.

They first showed their badges and said, "Miss Susan, you're currently suspected of a murder case. Please come with us for questioning."

I was completely stunned, but I still opened the door.

"Wait, please wait. Aren't you mistaken? How could I be suspected of murder? Who did I kill? I haven't done anything!"

"The heiress of Blue Sky Corporation, Charlotte," the officer said with a serious expression. "She just got into a car accident. After examination, her car was deliberately tampered with, causing brake failure."

The other officer added, "The victim just fired you, and then this happened. We have reason to suspect you carried out an act of revenge against the victim."

Learning the whole story, I really wanted to curse out loud.

How could I possibly do something illegal like this!

I rubbed my temples. "I'm very rational. I wouldn't do something like this just because I was fired. Besides, I'm excellent at my work - leaving Blue Sky Corporation, I could go to an even better company."

"Whether you did it or not, we'll investigate thoroughly. Now, please come with us."

Hospital.

When Sandy learned about Charlotte's car accident, she rushed over immediately. Seeing Charlotte's left leg in a cast, she was heartbroken. "My God, how did it get this bad? Are there any other injuries?"

After losing her daughter once before, Sandy absolutely couldn't bear it a second time.

Charlotte was terrified and threw herself into Sandy's arms. "Mom, I almost died! That damn Susan, I never thought she'd be so vicious. Just because I fired her, she wanted to kill me!"

Sandy had been so busy that she still didn't know about me being fired.

She was startled. "How is this related to Susan? And you fired Susan?"

Charlotte lied, "Of course I had to fire her! Yesterday, she left early without finishing her work. This morning I just wanted to talk to her about it. But she showed no remorse, so obviously I wasn't going to keep her! Who knew she'd be so vengeful and want me dead!"

Although Sandy felt sorry for her daughter, she hadn't lost her reason. She felt this matter wasn't simple.

She let go of Charlotte. "You're saying Susan left early? That's impossible."

"Mom! I was almost killed by Susan, and you're still taking her side? Am I your daughter, or is Susan your daughter!" Charlotte was extremely agitated, clenching her fists. "Anyway, I've already called the police. If you don't believe me, you can ask them. The car was examined - it was deliberately sabotaged!"

"I've only had a conflict with Susan. If she didn't want to harm me, who else could it be?"

"Charlotte, calm down first." Sandy hugged Charlotte again, patting her back soothingly. "Mom's not taking Susan's side. I just don't think Susan is that kind of person. Since the police are already investigating, let them look into it properly. We absolutely can't wrongly accuse an innocent person."

Charlotte pushed Sandy away and snorted coldly. "Just wait and see. You've been fooled by Susan's appearance! When the police find solid evidence, I'll definitely make sure she goes to prison!"

Because of Sandy's perceived favoritism, Charlotte resented me even more.

Sandy looked at her daughter, full of hostility, feeling quite worried and helpless.

She still remembered when Charlotte first came back, she caused all sorts of trouble - various bad habits, cursing constantly, skipping school, getting into fights, dating too young.

The most serious incident was at Charlotte's eighteenth birthday party when she got drunk and hit someone with a beer bottle, sending them to the hospital. That classmate became a vegetable, and she had to pay money to settle it.

After that incident, Charlotte became more restrained.

But for Charlotte's own good, Sandy steeled herself and sent Charlotte abroad to study, hoping she'd learn to be independent. Instead, Charlotte got even worse, and in the end, Sandy had to buy her diploma.

To help her daughter improve, Sandy had truly exhausted herself.

But now, she seemed to see Charlotte's most rebellious years again, which made her very tired.

Just then, the police came over, and Sandy indicated they should talk outside.

The officer said, "Currently, there's no solid evidence proving the car accident is related to Susan."

Sandy unconsciously breathed a sigh of relief. "Then where is she? Still in the detention center?"

"If we can't find evidence proving Susan is guilty within forty-eight hours, we'll naturally release her."

Perhaps worried I'd be scared in the detention center, Sandy frowned. "My daughter drove herself to the company this morning, which shows there was nothing wrong with her car before she got there. So her car must have been tampered with at the company. Have you checked the parking lot surveillance?"

The officer shook his head regretfully. "Miss Charlotte's car was parked in a surveillance blind spot. We didn't capture any suspicious people."

The most direct evidence was gone.

I could only stay in the detention center for the full forty-eight hours.

Rand Group.

Clair had just walked out of the conference room when he saw Dean pacing anxiously at the CEO's office door with a worried expression.

"What are you doing here?"

Clair's sudden words startled Dean. His eyes darted around guiltily as he said, "I missed you, so I came to see you. Don't you miss me?"

Clair pushed open the door and walked into the office, his thin lips parting slightly. "Cut the nonsense."

After a moment, Dean gathered his courage. "I accidentally let it slip - your mother knows about Susan's existence."
