Chapter 5

Alex's POV.

Not long after Sophia left, the door to my office flung open and none other than Emily barged in with Mary following closely behind in a rush.

“I'm so sorry, sir,” Mary apologized, looking at Emily in disgust. “I told her you were busy and didn't want to be disturbed but she just barged in anyways”.

I'm beginning to understand why these two had never gotten along, I thought.

“It's okay Mary, leave us,” I said. Just as Mary left, my anger erupted.

“What do you think you're doing here?! I barked, slowly standing up.

“Oh c'mon, baby, you wouldn't even take my calls, what was I supposed to do? I needed to apologize and I miss you” she drawled, walking towards me.

I was already getting carried away with the way her fingers were slowly caressing my chest. I could feel her warm breath as her lips moved dangerously close to mine.

“Remember all the fun we used to have?” she continued.

“Remember the wild sex? I'm sorry for everything Alex. I miss you and I want to be back in your life.”

Just hearing her say that she'd like to be back in my life was exactly what I needed to hear to snap me out of my lustful thoughts into reality.

“Now you listen to me and listen good,” I said, grabbing her hands off me.

“I want you out of this office and out of my life for good!

“I never want to see or hear from you again, do you understand?

“But Alex—” she started, pouting.

“I said get out!” I shouted, cutting her off and pointing a finger towards the door of my office.

She merely scoffed, grabbed her bags and said, “You'll regret this Alexander Hayes, mark my words” before stomping out of the office.

Sophia's POV.

Making a mental note to ask Mary about who Steve Harrison was, I stepped out of the elevator on the 50th floor.

“Hey, Mary,” I started, and immediately I got to her table.

“Do you happen to know who Who's Steve Harrison is? I met him while faxing these files and he's such an intriguing fellow”.

“Oh true” Mary replied, smiling.

“He's Mr. Hayes's best friend and business partner”.

Wow! Can two individuals be more different? I thought.

Seeing as I was late enough as it is, I hurried towards Mr Hayes's office after mumbling a quick “Thank you” to Mary.

But just as I was about to knock, the door flung open and I saw a woman walking out of the office, almost bumping into me.

She was gorgeous, tall and imposing, with long dark hair and a curvy figure I'd kill for.

I noticed the look of disgust on Mary's face suggesting that she didn't approve of this mystery lady.

This was the first time since I arrived that I'd seen Mary without her ever-present smile.

“What's going on Mary? Who's she?” I asked Mary as I walked back to her table, nodding towards the retreating curvy figure.

“That's Emily Johansen, she's Mr Hayes ex fiancé” came Mary's reply.

Fiancé? I was intrigued and also surprised at the pang of jealousy I felt but I hurriedly dismissed it, decided that it was none of my business and set off to the task at hand.

He was sitting on his chair, talking to someone on the phone when I arrived in his office. He didn't even spare me a glance and I stood there waiting for him to finish.

As I stood waiting with nothing to do, my eyes roamed lazily on the imposing man sitting in front of me.

He was wearing a black blazer and pants paired up with a white shirt. His hair was perfectly styled back. He was just so handsome, I'm sure girls will be falling head over heels for him. I mean, take for example the ex-fiancé who wanted him back.

Okay, Sophia, no such thoughts!

I didn't realize that I was staring at him until he looked at me with those piercing blue eyes. I quickly looked away.

My cheeks were burning and no, it was not blush, but embarrassment. My cheeks tended to go pink when I was embarrassed or angry.

“Files,” I said, keeping the files on his desk.

He was still staring at me with those piercing gazes and I was starting to feel nervous. No guy has ever looked at me with such intensity before.

“Do you need anything else?” I asked eager to get away from his gaze.

“Arrange a business lunch at one o'clock for the two of us at the waterside restaurant,” he said, back to typing furiously on his laptop.

Excuse me? Why would he want to have a business talk outside of the office when we can simply talk here?

What sort of logic is that?

I opened my mouth to argue only to blot out “Yes sir” and headed out of the office.

*****

Everything here in the waterside restaurant screamed rich.

They were men in expensive suits and women in model dresses. I felt like an outsider. The tiles, the booths, the people, and even the glasses screamed expensively!

I shifted nervously from one foot to another and stood behind Mr Hayes in hopes that no one would spare a glance at me.

“Reservations under Mr Hayes,” he said and the girl behind the desk cut him a flirtatious smile. I can't even blame her, this man is handsome.

She showed us the way to our booth and left but not before slipping her number beneath the glass, which he later crumpled and threw in the trash.

I was surprised at the amount of pride I felt when he did that and I wondered how often he's had to do that considering how often girls must make passes at him.

After settling into on our booth, he asked, “What would you like to have?”

I squirmed under his gaze, feeling uncomfortable in a very different way.

“I don't know” I replied.

“Fine then, I'll order for both of us.”

I nodded and began playing with my fingers.

I was starting to get bored because he was busy looking through the menu and I had nothing better to do other than staring through my phone.

“Do you know why I brought you here?” he asked, finally breaking the silence.

I muttered a small “no”.

“I'm here to take your interview, Miss O'Brien.”
