Chapter 52 Ignoring His Calls

Having spoken, Madison couldn't help but find it a bit amusing.

For Grayson, staying to care for her was a duty. Going with Nora to the hospital to change her dressings was what he really wanted.

Madison had thought she was above using duty to bind someone.

When she had first learned she was pregnant, she didn't want to chain him down with so-called responsibilities. But now, she had done just that. She didn't really want to watch Grayson walk out the door with Nora.

Perhaps it was to spite Nora.

Grayson stared at her with narrowed eyes, and then, after a moment, he chuckled. "Didn't you prefer that I didn't stay before? What changed your mind now?"

Madison faced his mocking eyes, her lips turning a slight shade paler. "You said it, Grayson. Taking care of me is your responsibility, isn't it?"

Grayson let out a soft laugh and released her. "Don't worry, Madison. I won't leave you hanging. I'll be back soon after Nora's dressing change."

With that, Grayson turned and left.

Madison watched the closing door and laughed bitterly to herself. She had overestimated her influence.

"Madison, are you okay?" the nanny called out.

Madison snapped back to reality and, after a brief silence, said, "I'm fine."

The nanny frowned in concern. She said she was fine, yet her complexion looked terrible.

But Madison truly felt fine. It wasn't the first time, after all. She was surprisingly becoming accustomed to it.

She went into her room, thought for a moment, and began typing up a resignation letter on her computer. Despite Grayson's clear opposition, she sent it anyway.

After sending it, Madison lay down. She wasn't sure if it was due to weakness, but she felt cold. She wrapped herself in the blanket, then felt too hot. After tossing and turning for a while, she finally drifted off to sleep.

The next thing she knew, the nanny was waking her up.

"Madison? Wake up, honey."

Madison's head throbbed, her body limp with exhaustion. Blinking her eyes open, she saw her nanny, Sue, standing by the bed, an anxious look on her face.

"Madison, you're running a fever. Do you think it's the flu?"

Madison touched her forehead. "Maybe. Just get me some fever medicine, will you?"

Sue frowned. "I really think we should go to the hospital."

Glancing at the clock, it was already past one in the afternoon. She had slept more than intended.

"Is Grayson back?"

Sue shook her head.

After a moment of silence, Madison murmured, "Just the medicine for now."

Reluctantly, Sue fetched the medicine and brought it with a bowl of soup.

"Drink some soup before you take the pills," Sue advised.

Madison had no appetite, but she wasn't in the mood to argue. She took the soup and began to sip it. But as soon as she did, a wave of nausea hit her. Rushing to the bathroom, she threw up everything she had just ingested.

Sue watched on, pale with worry.

"Madison, we really need to get you to the hospital. Should I call Mr. Grayson?"

Madison shook her head. "No need."

There was no point in calling Grayson if he didn't want to come back.

Pushing through the discomfort, Madison emerged from the bathroom, swallowed the pills Sue had found and drifted back to sleep.

When she awoke next, darkness had settled in.

"You're still feverish. We're going to the hospital," Sue insisted again.

This time, Madison nodded. There was no use postponing it any longer.

Heading downstairs, she realized it was raining outside. During rush hour, it was impossible to hail a cab. Her attempts to secure a ride were all in vain.

Hesitant, she dialed Grayson's number, and after two rings, the call connected.

"Grayson, I'm..." She got out before a man's voice, Nicholas's, came through with a hint of lazy sarcasm.

"Madison? Grayson rushed out to pick up Nora and left in such a hurry he forgot his phone. What's up?"

The knuckles of Madison's hand gripping the phone whitened.

She hung up abruptly and continued to try for a ride through her phone app.

When she finally managed to catch a ride and arrived at the hospital, an hour had passed.

Amelia frowned at the sight of the drenched Madison, her face twisted in displeasure. "Do you have any idea how dangerous it is for you to be out in the rain right now?"

Madison gave a faint, pained smile. "Okay, I get it. Please don't be mad. I already feel terrible. Can we drop it, considering I'm sick and all?"

Seeing Madison's condition, Amelia was torn between anger and sympathy. After a stern look, she took Madison to get checked out. "There's an infection. You'll need IV fluids."

Madison nodded slightly, and Amelia arranged a hospital room and set up the IV before she asked, "Where's Grayson?"

After a pause, Madison replied, "He's busy with something."

"Too busy to bring you to the hospital, huh? Is this his idea of taking good care of you?"

Madison's smile tightened noticeably. "For a relationship like ours, him hiring a nanny for me was already the height of generosity. I couldn't possibly expect him to take care of me," she said with a hint of sarcasm.

Amelia cursed under her breath. "I'm not asking for him to be by your side 24/7, but is it too much to expect him to at least bring you to the hospital? Is he really that busy? What kind of jerk does Grayson think he is, believing money solves everything?"

Madison thought maybe Grayson did believe that. When it came to her, he seemed to think money could fix any issue.

She didn't want to talk about Grayson anymore. The more she talked about him, the more upset she felt.

"I'm tired. I need to rest."

Amelia, knowing the avoidance of what it was, still nodded reluctantly. "Try to get some sleep."

Madison couldn't. As soon as Amelia left, she pulled out her phone again. The company group chat was unusually lively today. A glance told her the topic was once again Grayson and Nora.

"Grayson's seriously impressive, eh? First, the late-night rescue, now the ride in the rain? I never took him for the tender type."

"Right?"

"I mean, he and Ms. Nora really are a great match."

"Anyone got the scoop? Are they already talking about marriage?"

...

Madison skimmed through the messages, intending to log off, but an incoming photo caught her eye before she could exit.

Curiosity had her clicking on it, and immediately, she regretted the decision.

The photo was of none other than Grayson and Nora. The photographer had a knack for capturing clarity even in low light.

Grayson stood drenched in the rain, his form tall and distinguished under a black umbrella. With a casual elegance about him, he struck the image of an elegant aristocrat.

He was turned, watching the approaching figure of a woman. His eyes were soft with tenderness.

Nora was smiling as she walked toward Grayson, her figure slim and radiant with a lively beauty. Together, they looked like a perfect match, as was obvious even from a photograph.

Madison's fingers tensed slightly, and she let out a wry smile as she stepped back.

By the time her IV drip finished, it was already past ten at night. After the nurse removed the needle, Madison's phone began to ring. It was Grayson calling.

She looked at the screen, hesitated for a moment, and then pressed to silence the call.
