Chapter 47 Find Another Man to Have a Kid
Madison was silent for a moment and then laughed softly. "Yeah, it feels pretty good."
Grayson watched her, the silence lingering before he finally spoke, "Let's put Nora's issue to rest. We don't need to bring it up every time."
There was no hiding the reproach in his words.
Madison's laugh was tinged with desolation. "Grayson, you've seen everything from the start. Did I bring this up? And have I blamed Nora? Does she really need to act all innocent in front of me?"
Grayson's expression darkened. "You didn't blame her, but is that really what you think?"
"You mean I'm not even allowed to think it?"
Grayson glanced at her and said nothing more.
Madison felt unsettled, and her whole demeanor was off. She found walking difficult, her legs weak, but she didn't want to ask Grayson for help.
Grayson frowned at her and, in the end, stopped to pick her up.
"I'm capable of walking on my own. Maybe you should check on Ms. Nora. She's hurt because of me, too, and that's a responsibility I can't really take on."
Grayson looked at her, his gaze frosty. "Madison, we're done talking about Nora. Don't you get it? I'm carrying you out of obligation."
Madison's lips tightened, and she said no more. Neither did Grayson.
He just carried her with a stern face and put her into the car. It was a different vehicle. His usual one must've been sent for cleaning.
Neither spoke for the duration of the drive.
Once home, Grayson carried Madison up the stairs. It seemed, just as he had said, he was fulfilling his responsibility.
It was not from affection or guilt, but because he deemed it his obligation—the obligation of having gotten her pregnant. There was nothing more beyond that.
...
The door opened from the inside before Grayson could unlock it.
Someone came out to greet them. "Mr. Grayson."
Grayson nodded, then looked down at Madison. "From now on, she will take care of your needs."
Madison was silent for a moment, offering no objection. She really did need someone to care for her.
Grayson wouldn't allow Amelia to do it and would certainly not attend to her himself. So, hiring someone seemed only natural.
"I appreciate your help," she said.
"The pleasure is mine."
Grayson carried Madison straight to the bedroom. He looked at the woman lying in bed, his brow lightly furrowed.
Apart from the one time she awoke crying, she hadn't shown any odd behaviors since. It was as if the harrowing miscarriage had never happened.
Grayson tried his best to ignore the heavy feeling in his chest. But now, looking at her still-pale face, he couldn't help feeling uneasy.
"Anything you feel like eating?" he asked.
"I'm not hungry," Madison mumbled from under the covers without looking at him.
"I had the housekeeper make some soup. Will you have some?"
"I really don't have an appetite."
"Madison, you need to take care of yourself now. If you don't cherish your own body, no one else will feel sorry for you!"
Grayson left the bedroom shortly after speaking and told the housekeeper outside, "Serve her a bowl of soup and make sure she drinks it all."
The housekeeper acknowledged with a nod.
Madison stared at the soup brought to her, but her stomach just churned with nausea. "I don't want it."
The housekeeper looked distressed. "Madison, please try to drink a little."
She remembered Grayson stern face earlier—it was downright frightening. Madison knew that if she didn't eat, it was the housekeeper who would suffer. However, she couldn't stomach anything.
"I would like something lighter."
"All right, I'll go make it right away."
As the housekeeper left with the soup, Grayson's eyebrows knitted together. "She didn't eat?"
"Madison asked for something lighter."
Grayson paused for a moment, then said, "Make her something light then. And from now on, check with her before preparing meals."
"Okay." The housekeeper hurriedly acquiesced and stepped into the kitchen.
Grayson glanced at the closed bedroom door before turning to enter his study.
The housekeeper eventually made some corn soup for Madison. Despite her lack of appetite, Madison ended up eating it.
She had to admit Grayson was right. She needed to nurture her own body. No one else could she expect to care for her except herself.
Grayson was always so rational and clear-headed.
Madison tasted bitterness in her mouth.
However, the housekeeper watched over Madison with a cheerful demeanor. "Mr. Grayson is really good to you," she said.
Madison looked up at the housekeeper, managing only a bitter smile in response. He wouldn't have remained so indifferent about her miscarriage if he truly cared. If he genuinely cared, he wouldn't have favored Nora without hesitation, especially today.
After finishing the soup, Madison leaned against the headboard, and her hand subconsciously moved toward her stomach. As soon as her hand touched, she pulled back.
The pregnancy and its subsequent loss hadn't lasted long, but she had already developed this habit. Her fingers, which retracted, clenched the bedsheets tightly.
It seemed like the only way she could suppress the pain that spread from her heart.
Tears slipped from the corner of her eye unnoticed.
The nanny looked at her, suddenly panicked. "Madison, are you okay?"
Madison sniffled, struggling to control her emotions. "I'm fine. I just need to rest for a bit."
"Okay, you do that." The nanny quickly left the room.
After the nanny left, Madison took a deep breath and calmed herself down. She had said she needed to rest as an excuse, but perhaps due to her weakness, she actually fell asleep once she lay down.
When Grayson entered the room and saw her lying on the bed, he stopped in his tracks. Her face was still devoid of color. Her eyelids trembled gently as if her sleep wasn't peaceful. After a moment, a tear silently rolled down from the corner of her eye.
Grayson furrowed his brows. He stood beside the bed, looking down at her.
His fingers twitched and eventually settled beside her, wiping away the tear. He couldn't quite understand Madison's desire to keep the baby. After all, a child out of wedlock was a complete irresponsibility for both the child and the adults involved.
Yet, he couldn't help but be affected by her emotions. He sighed softly, and as he was about to withdraw his hand, Madison opened her eyes. The sight of Grayson with furrowed brows made her heartache.
Perhaps to him, her pregnancy was just a nuisance.
"I'm sorry," she said softly.
Grayson pulled his hand back.
"Madison, you should know our relationship isn't suited for children." His voice had a raspy edge.
Madison looked away. "I know."
Grayson nodded. After what seemed like an eternity, he added, "If you really want a child, find a man who loves you after our contract is over."
