Chapter 45 Grayson, You're Heartless

Grayson didn't take her words to heart.

The man spoke in a calm and measured way. "Madison, you should realize that you don't get to call it quits. I can let the fact that you hid your pregnancy slide, but don't use the miscarriage as an excuse to push me away," the man's voice was devoid of any emotion.

Madison let out a wry laugh.

Yes, she truly had no right. The contract they had both signed was far from fair to her. In his presence, she was perpetually without rights. She ahd n right to get angry, no right to be whimsical, not even the right to talk about parting ways.

"Feeling wronged?" Grayson inquired.

Madison chuckled lightly. "Not at all."

There was no hysteria, just a faint sadness that was somehow suffocating to listen to. A wave of annoyance instantly flared up inside Grayson.

He turned Madison around to face him. "Madison, since you decided to keep the child, you should've been ready to face the consequences. Who are you putting on this act for now?"

Madison listened to the emotionless words of the man, word by word. A vein on her pale forehead subtly protruded. Her eyes burned with an intense soreness.

The corners of her lips trembled ever so slightly. "Grayson, do you even have a heart?"

Anybody with a heart wouldn't ask such a thing.

Grayson let out a light laugh. The question actually stumped him.

Even he wasn't sure if he had a heart.

Probably not.

He stood up, grabbed a pack of cigarettes from the table, took one out, and put it between his lips. He didn't light it. He just held it there.

"Madison, things in this world don't just work out because you care. What good did your caring do? The child is still gone. So, power and influence trump sentiment. I may not have a heart, but I have power and influence, and that's something you can't fight against."

Madison forced a smile.

Grayson's words, devoid of any feeling, left her without a retort.

He did have power and influence, and she truly couldn't resist.

After what felt like an eternity, she managed to say with a laugh, "You're right, Grayson. Lesson learned."

Grayson's brow furrowed slightly.

Hearing Madison's sarcastic tone made him even more irritated. He didn't actually blame her. He couldn't stand seeing her like this. He would rather have her cry out loud, curse fiercely—anything but this subdued state.

But, in the end, he said nothing.

Silence fell over the hospital room.

It was a long while before Grayson finally turned his head to glance at Madison. "This isn't over until I say so, Madison. Don't talk to me about endings—you can't handle the consequences."

Madison offered a wan smile, her beautiful eyes brimming with sorrow. She closed her eyes briefly, struggling for a moment before reopening them to a restored calm.

She understood that her relationship with Grayson was inherently imbalanced. It wouldn't end unless he allowed it. However, she couldn't fathom why he insisted on keeping her around, especially when Nora had already come back.

She wondered if this was just part of his game, or if it was his intolerance for her defiance.

None of these reasons mattered to Madison anymore. She was too worn out.

Exhausted, Madison lay down and fell asleep.

Meanwhile, sleep was far from Grayson's mind. He picked up his lighter and left the hospital room.

In the designated smoking area, he lit up and deeply inhaled before dialing a number. "Get someone out for me."

In the dead of night, a car left the hospital and eventually parked outside a derelict factory in the suburbs.

Grayson kicked open a workshop door and was immediately greeted by a barrage of curses.

"Bitch! She destroyed my daughter and now tries to ruin me? Business people and politicians in cahoots—I swear she'll pay! When I'm out, I'll kill her myself!"

Grayson flexed his stiff wrists and picked up a broken stick off the ground, weighing it in his hand. Without waiting for a reaction, he swung it down on the man's leg. The sound of a cracking bone and a scream echoed through the old workshop.

Discarding the stick, Grayson took out another cigarette and lit it up. "Who told you to do this?"

The man's face was white with pain, his eyes filled with terror as he stared at Grayson. "She hurt my daughter! It's all her fault! What's wrong if I just pushed her?"

Jack stood to the side, his forehead beaded with sweat, worried about the repercussions if this went too far.

"Mr. Grayson, we've interrogated him all day, and he's sticking to his story—he pushed Madison in a moment of anger because she wouldn't forgive his daughter. It seems reasonable," Jack suggested cautiously.

Grayson's eyes narrowed slightly.

Seeing this, Jack quickly added, "Do you suspect someone else? Tell us, and we'll investigate."

Grayson was silent for a long pause. "No."

With that, he walked toward the exit.

Early the next morning, Amelia came in to check on Madison, and after confirming she was okay, she proceeded to discharge her. Amelia glanced at Grayson, who sat on the couch, his face a storm cloud of gloom.

"Grayson, if it's inconvenient for you, I can help take care of Madison during her recovery."

Grayson's dark eyes lifted slightly, a hint of irritation in his voice. "There's no need to trouble outsiders with this."

Amelia frowned. "Are you sure you can handle it?"

His gaze landed on Amelia's nametag. "Amelia, prescribing without permission, with no doctor's orders and not even recording the results in the system. Do you think you can keep your job?"

Amelia's face turned pale. "Grayson, you..."

Madison quickly took hold of Amelia's arm.

Grayson always meant what he said. Butting heads with him would only backfire on Amelia.

Grayson glanced at Madison. "Go get changed. I'll handle the paperwork."

After Grayson had left, Amelia was still fuming. "That man, Grayson, is such a jerk!"

Madison was silent for a moment. "What we have is just a deal." After a slight pause, she continued, "So, don't talk about him like that again. Grayson is not someone to be messed with."

Amelia knew better than to provoke Grayson, but she couldn't suppress her anger. "So you're just going to accept what happened this time? Why does he always get the easy part, and you get the hardships?"

Madison looked up and forced a smile. "What else can I do to him?"

Amelia's brows knitted together in frustration. As much as it annoyed her, she had to admit she couldn't argue with Madison's point. Ordinary folks like them didn't stand a chance against someone like Grayson.

In the end, she could only curse him in her mind to feel a little better.

When Grayson returned after finishing the paperwork, Madison was ready to go. She tried to get out of bed, but just as she stood up, her legs gave way. Grayson quickly caught her.

"Don't push yourself if you can't walk."

After saying that, he bent down and picked her up in his arms.
