Chapter 53 SHIFTING PERSPECTIVES

Chapter 53 SHIFTING PERSPECTIVES

Adeline's POV

The next morning, I woke to find Kayden already gone. A note placed carefully on his pillow.

I have an early meeting with Marco. Be back by lunch. Love you.
Love you.

Two words that used to terrify me. Now they were the anchor keeping me steady while everything else felt uncertain.

I made coffee, stood on the terrace overlooking the gardens, and tried to organize my thoughts.

Six weeks to observe Grey's present, not his past.
Six weeks to give him a fair chance.
Six weeks to either prove my instincts right or accept I'd been wrong all along.

My phone buzzed. It was a text from Belle.
"Dress shopping tomorrow! Just you and me. Please say yes?"

I smiled despite everything. "Of course. What time?"

"10 AM. I already have appointments at three boutiques. This is going to be SO FUN!"

Her enthusiasm was infectious. Or maybe I was just desperate to feel something other than doubt and worry.

"Can't wait," I typed back.

Another text came through almost immediately. This one was from Grey.

"Thanks for yesterday. Belle hasn't stopped talking about how happy she is that you're being supportive. It means everything to her. And to me."

I stared at the message. It seemed genuine and grateful. Not manipulative or threatening.
Just... normal

"She's my sister. Her happiness matters to me," I replied.

"I know. And I promise I'll spend the rest of my life making sure she stays this happy."

I wanted to find something sinister in those words. Some hidden threat or double meaning.
But they just sounded like what a man in love would say.

Kayden came home around noon, as promised. He found me still on the terrace, lost in thought.

"You okay?" he asked, wrapping his arms around me from behind.

"Belle wants to go dress shopping tomorrow. Just the two of us."

"That's good. Sister time….You need that."

"And Grey texted, thanking me for being supportive."

"How do you feel about that?"

"Confused. Everything he says sounds right, looks right. But I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop."

Kayden turned me to face him. "What if there is no other shoe? What if this is just... a normal guy marrying a girl he loves?"

"Normal guys don't have sealed juvenile records and secret meetings with mafia kingpins."

"Fair point." He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, his fingers brushing the blue-dyed tips.

"But even abnormal guys can fall in love. Can want to build a good life."

"Speaking from experience?"

"Maybe." His smile was soft. "I was the monster everyone feared. The Mafia Prince with blood on his hands and rumors of matricide following him everywhere. But then you came along. And suddenly I wanted to be better. To deserve you."

"That's different.”

"Is it? Or are we just more comfortable judging others than recognizing our own capacity for change?"

I didn't have an answer for that.
"Come on," Kayden said, taking my hand. "Let's have lunch. Stop overthinking for an hour.

We ate on the terrace, simple sandwiches and fruit, talking about everything except Grey and Belle.

Kayden told me about Marco's latest dating disaster. Apparently he'd taken a woman to a shooting range for a first date and couldn't understand why she hadn't called back.

"He's hopeless," Kayden said, shaking his head. "Completely hopeless."

"Says the man who proposed a contract marriage as a romantic gesture."

"That worked out pretty well, I think."

"Only because I'm as weird as you are."

"Exactly. We're perfectly matched in our weirdness." He reached across the table, laced his fingers through mine.

"I'm serious though. About what happens when the contract year ends."

"Kayden—"

"No, listen. I know we've danced around this. But Adeline, I don't want this to end. I want to renew our vows. For real this time. No contracts, no obligations. Just... us. Choosing each other."

My throat tightened. "You want to stay married to me?"

"I want to stay married to you for the rest of my life. If you'll have me."

"I'm an assassin. I have secrets. I've done terrible things."

"And I'm the son of a mafia king with enough blood on my hands to fill an ocean. We're not exactly conventional, Bluey."

The nickname made warmth spread through my chest, and a twist of ironic amusement.

He'd started calling me that because of my eyes and the blue streaks in my hair. He had no idea how fitting it was for other reasons. Midnight Cerulean, Blue Ray.

The hacker and assassin he'd never suspect was sleeping beside him every night.

"What are you smiling about?" he asked.

"Nothing. Just... I like when you call me that."

"Bluey suits you. Beautiful and just a little bit dangerous." He stood, pulled me up with him.

"Say yes. Or at least say you'll think about it."

"I'll think about it," I whispered.

But I was already thinking yes. I had been thinking yes for weeks now.

Kayden kissed me, slow and deep, tasting like summer and promises and home.
When we finally broke apart, he was smiling.

"I'll take 'thinking about it' for now. But Adeline?"

"Yeah?"

"I'm going to spend the next six weeks proving you should say yes. Fair warning."

"I look forward to it."

That evening, I retreated to my private office, the one room in the mansion that was truly mine. Kayden respected my privacy here, never entering without permission.

I pulled up my encrypted communication line with Stardust.

"Blue," they answered. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

"I need you to do something for me."

"Always. What's the job?"

"Not a job. More like... surveillance. I need you to monitor Grey Falvetti's current activities. Not his past, his present."

"Looking for what?"

"Anything that proves he's dangerous. Or..." I hesitated. "Anything that proves he's not."

Stardust was quiet for a moment. "You're actually considering the possibility you were wrong."

"I'm considering all possibilities. Can you do it?"

"Of course. But Blue, this is going to cost you. Surveillance on someone connected to the Gravanos, tracking his every move, monitoring communications... it's risky."

"I'll pay whatever you want."

"I don't want money. I want a favor. One job, my choosing, when I need it."

I didn't like open-ended agreements. But I needed this.

"Done. But nothing that involves Kayden or Belle. And nothing that compromises my family."

"Fair enough. I'll start tonight. I should have preliminary findings in forty-eight hours."

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet. You might not like what I find. Either way."

The call ended.

I sat in the darkness of my office, the glow of multiple monitors the only light, wondering what I'd just set in motion.

A soft knock on the door. "Adeline?"

I quickly minimized the screens. "Come in."

Kayden appeared in the doorway. "Talking to yourself?"

"Just thinking, and going over some things."

"About Grey?"

"About everything. The wedding. Belle. Whether I'm making the right call giving him a fair chance."

He crossed to me, pulled me to my feet. "Come to bed. You're exhausted."

"I'm scared," I admitted quietly.

"Of what?"

"Of being wrong either way. If I'm wrong about Grey being dangerous, I'm a paranoid control freak destroying my sister's happiness. If I'm wrong about giving him a chance, I'm putting her in danger. There's no winning here."

"Yes there is. You love Belle. You're
doing your best to protect her while respecting her choices. That's all you can do. That's all any of us can do."

He was right. I knew he was right.
But it didn't make the fear go away.
