Chapter 29 — Out of the Fog

Chapter 29 — Out of the Fog

Eva didn’t sleep well. The bed felt unfamiliar, her thoughts tangled with the boardroom, Luke’s question, and Noah’s absence.

She had told Rachel that she needed space from him for a few days, and at the time, it had felt honest. But now, her phone sat heavy on her nightstand, accusing in its silence.

She wasn’t sure what she needed. Only that nothing felt clear anymore.

The next morning dawned grey and cool. Mist clung to the windows of her apartment, fog rolling in off the water as if the entire world had blurred overnight. She padded barefoot into the kitchen to find Rachel already brewing coffee, two mugs waiting.

"You didn’t sleep," Rachel said simply.

Eva leaned against the counter. "Not a minute."

"You want to talk about it?"

Eva hesitated. Then she did.

She told Rachel everything. About the way her heart had leapt when she saw Noah waiting outside the hotel. About the way their kiss had made her feel like a thousand sharp edges had softened all at once. About the doubt. The lingering ache. The guilt over Luke.

Rachel listened, patient, present.

"You’re not doing anything wrong by loving him again," she said when Eva finally ran out of words. "But you have to be sure you’re not doing it because it feels like history. Comfort."

Eva nodded. "I know. But it doesn’t feel like comfort. It feels like fire. Still."

Rachel gave her a long look. "Then maybe the question is, do you still want to burn?"

Later that afternoon, Eva met Claire at the hotel to finalize reports. The board was officially moving forward with her plan, and now every step mattered.

Claire noticed the shadows under her eyes. "You sure you’re up for this today?"

"One thing at a time," Eva said. "If I can run a renovation while sleep-deprived and emotionally wrecked, that’s probably a leadership skill."

Claire gave a rare smirk. "You’re the only one I trust to pull this off."

They spent hours reviewing vendor quotes, guest feedback, marketing updates. Eva fell into the rhythm, grateful for something that made sense. Numbers. Goals. Progress. But behind every decision, Noah lingered.

By early evening, Eva stepped out onto the hotel terrace alone. The city below was flickering to life, lights glowing gold against the fog. She leaned on the railing and let the cool wind hit her face.

And then she heard footsteps.

Noah.

She didn’t need to turn around to know it was him.

"You came back," she said.

He stopped a few feet behind her. "Didn’t know if I should."

"I told you I needed space."

"And I gave it."

She turned slowly.

Noah looked like he hadn’t slept either. Hair rumpled. Eyes shadowed. But the way he looked at her—it hadn’t changed.

"You told me once," he said softly, "that loving someone doesn’t mean you have to destroy yourself for them. I remember that, Eva. I’m not here to pull you under again."

She swallowed hard. "I don’t know what we are now. I don’t know how to feel safe with you."

"Then let me earn it. Let me prove it doesn’t have to be like before."

He took a slow step forward.

"Let me love you the way I should have."

Tears pricked her eyes, sudden and hot. "I never stopped," she whispered. "I tried. I did. But it never really left me."

Noah reached out, carefully, like he was touching something sacred. His hand brushed hers. "Then don’t say anything. Just let me hold you."

She didn’t move for a moment.

Then she did.

Eva let herself fall forward into him, his arms wrapping around her like a harbor. She breathed him in and let the storm settle.

Later that night, back in her apartment, Eva sat curled up with Noah on her couch. The city buzzed outside, but the room was quiet.

They didn’t talk about tomorrow. Or Luke. Or the fallout still waiting.

Just for now, they held on.

Because for the first time in years, the past didn’t feel like a curse.

It felt like a road back to something worth saving.

Noah stayed the night.

Not out of lust, not even because of comfort—but because neither of them wanted to sleep alone anymore. They lay wrapped in each other’s warmth, limbs tangled and breaths aligned. There was no rush for anything beyond what already was.

In the early hours of the morning, Eva stirred and whispered, "What if this all falls apart again?"

Noah’s voice was low and close, brushing the back of her neck. "Then we rebuild. Together."

She wanted to believe it. And for once, she almost did.

By the time morning light filtered through her curtains, Eva felt something she hadn’t in weeks—clarity. There would still be hard conversations, awkward boardroom stares, Luke’s quiet hurt. But for now, she had a steady place to land. One she thought she’d lost forever.

She sat up and looked at Noah sleeping beside her, the lines on his face softer in rest. And just like that, she knew—this wasn’t the end of something. It was the beginning.

And she was ready to fight for it.
