Chapter 17 The Ash Prophet
Chapter 17 The Ash Prophet
The Ember Library still hummed from the last battle, molten veins pulsing faintly as though recovering from the strain of Lyra’s Heart Vein mastery. Yet the victory felt fleeting. She could feel it in the air the Ascendant Order was not done, and neither was the Cult of Ash.
Orin’s voice was low, urgent. “Lyra… you have proven yourself. But the Ash Prophet will not wait. He has likely already begun consolidating his forces. You must strike first, or Tessa will be lost to him forever.”
Lyra’s chest burned, Heart Vein thrumming with determination. “Then we go. Tonight.”
Kael’s jaw tightened. “Strike first? You mean, storm their fortress? With what flames and hope?”
Lyra’s eyes glinted gold. “Exactly that.”
The path to the Order’s stronghold wound through the Ember Wastes, twisting around molten rivers and jagged obsidian cliffs. Solaryn hummed softly inside her, guiding her along the safest routes while Orin whispered wards to conceal their passage. Kael moved at her side, every sense alert.
Hours or perhaps moments later, they arrived at a massive structure carved into the side of a black mountain. Smoke and molten fissures wrapped around it like veins of living fire. At the summit, a figure cloaked in black and ember threads waited, motionless: the Ash Prophet.
Lyra’s pulse quickened. She felt Solaryn surge, sensing the depth of the man’s power. The Heart Vein reacted immediately, veins along her arms and neck flaring as molten energy thrummed in harmony with his presence.
Kael’s eyes narrowed. “You sure this is a good idea?”
Lyra didn’t answer. Her focus was on the Prophet. Every instinct screamed danger, yet she felt the opportunity to act before the cult could consolidate their defenses.
The Prophet spoke, voice deep and lyrical, carrying across the molten air. “Child of Flame… you come willingly. Bold, but foolish. Do you know what you face?”
Lyra stepped forward, golden light flaring from her palms. “I know enough. You have Tessa. You want to awaken the Solar Wyrm. I’m stopping you. And I’m taking my sister back.”
The Ash Prophet’s lips curved into a faint smile beneath the dragon skull mask. “Ah… the fire of youth. Strong, untamed, desperate. You are my heir in spirit, if not in name. But power always demands a price. Are you willing to pay it?”
Lyra’s pulse flared. Solaryn thrummed in anticipation. “I’ve paid already. And I’ll pay more. But not for you. For Tessa. For Verris. For every soul you’ve burned.”
The first strike came in a wave of fire and shadow. Warlocks surged forward from hidden fissures, and constructs formed from black molten essence lashed toward Lyra.
Kael moved beside her, parrying and striking with precision. Lyra’s golden flames rose in serpentine whips, guided by the Heart Vein. Every movement was deliberate, every pulse synchronized with the molten currents beneath the mountain.
She could feel the Prophet observing, assessing, probing the limits of her control. Solaryn whispered urgently: He is testing you. Focus. Do not falter.
Lyra nodded, veins glowing brighter. She let the Heart Vein flow, coiling molten energy into precise, devastating arcs that bound and purified the constructs without harming the terrain.
The Ash Prophet descended, floating above the battlefield with an aura of molten power and shadow. His hands glowed with ember-thread sigils, dark flames rippling across his robes. “So… you can control the Heart Vein. Impressive. But can you withstand the Ashfire?”
Before she could respond, a wave of black-and-gold flame erupted, twisting reality as it struck toward her. The molten serpents of her Heart Vein surged to intercept, clashing with the corrupted fire. Sparks flew. Stone cracked. The air hissed with the intensity of two ancient magics colliding.
Kael shouted, “Lyra! That’s not normal fire it’s alive!”
Lyra gritted her teeth. “I know! And I will bend it!”
She let the Heart Vein expand, pulsing in resonance with the molten veins beneath the stronghold. Her golden flames intertwined with the Ashfire, not to destroy, but to stabilize it, purifying the corrupted essence and forcing it to yield to her intent.
The Prophet’s eyes narrowed beneath the mask. “Interesting… you are stronger than I expected. But strength alone will not save her.”
Lyra’s chest burned with exertion. The Heart Vein throbbed, veins along her arms blazing with molten light. I cannot falter. I will not falter.
Kael’s voice broke through the chaos. “Lyra! He’s testing you! Push too hard, and you could burn yourself out!”
She exhaled, letting her flames flow with precision, conserving energy while maintaining control. Every pulse of her Heart Vein reflected her intent, weaving a delicate balance of destruction and protection.
The Prophet advanced, stepping into the molten currents. His voice was calm, almost poetic. “Do you feel it, child of Flame? The Wyrm calls. Every heartbeat, every pulse of your veins resonates with it. Imagine… what could be yours if you joined me instead of opposing me?”
Lyra’s heart surged. The temptation of unimaginable power whispered to her, the promise of strength enough to awaken Tessa without further sacrifice. But Solaryn’s voice was firm: Do not yield. That is not your path.
“No,” she said aloud, golden eyes blazing. “I will not become what you want me to be. I am the flame. And I choose my own path.”
The Ash Prophet laughed softly, a sound that reverberated through the molten corridors. “So be it. Then let us see if the Flamebearer can endure judgment.”
He raised both hands, summoning an enormous construct: a dragon-shaped storm of ash and molten gold, larger than any Lyra had faced. Its roar split the air, eyes blazing with ancient fire and shadow.
Kael’s eyes widened. “Oh, come on! A dragon again? Really?”
Lyra’s veins flared. The Heart Vein pulsed violently in response. She could feel the molten currents of the mountain, the library, and her own body intertwining. I am the flame. I am the Heart Vein. I am Solaryn.
She extended her hands, golden serpentine flames coiling outward. Not as a weapon of destruction but as a vessel of control. The molten essence of the mountain, the chamber, and her own Heart Vein intertwined to bind the construct, forcing it to yield rather than annihilate.
The Ash Prophet’s eyes narrowed. Beneath the mask, Lyra could feel his curiosity, the glimmer of intrigue. So… she bends even the impossible…
Kael glanced at her, voice awed. “You… you’re shaping reality itself.”
Lyra exhaled, veins glowing bright gold. “I’m shaping what must exist. And you… will not take her.”
The molten currents of the Wastes pulsed in harmony with her Heart Vein, coiling around the construct, purifying, restraining, and binding it. Flames spiraled like living serpents, following every flick of her intent. The Ash Prophet faltered, momentarily disrupted by the magnitude of her control.
Orin whispered from the side, voice tense. “Do not overextend. The Heart Vein has limits, even for you.”
Lyra’s chest burned, golden veins flaring. I know. But I cannot hesitate. Not now.
The battle raged on, molten energy and shadow clashing, but Lyra stood resolute. She was no longer just the girl who had fled explosions and uncertainty. She was the flame itself, the living embodiment of the Heart Vein, and the Ascendant Order would soon learn the cost of challenging her.
