All For Zyliah
All For Zyliah
CHAPTER 182
KEVIN'S POV
"What a surprise, Fynn. You didn't tell me you were coming."
It was, indeed, a surprise to see Fynn in my home, especially since I was about to leave the house on a date with Zyliah.
"I was just about to leave the house."
He stepped further into the living room, where I was giving instructions to my maids on what to prepare because Zyliah had agreed to come to my house after the date.
I wanted them to prepare the best for her. I already knew her favorite, so it would be easy.
It even impressed me to see how well she was starting to run her company.
"Really? Where are you going?" he asked.
"On a date." My response came easy and without nerves.
I didn't care if he knew or not. He had his chance and lost it. If Zyliah were to be my sister, I wouldn't let him get a second chance with her.
The only reason I'd promised to help him was because I hadn't gotten to know Zyliah then. But now that I did, that lady deserved every love and assurance a man would and could give her, so she definitely wasn't for Fynn...not anymore.
Plus, anytime Fynn popped up in our conversation, I recognized the look of disinterest and a bit of spite that would temporarily swamp her expression.
Whatever Fynn was feeling for Zyliah, it definitely wasn't mutual. And judging by Zyliah's response when his name came up, it never would be.
"With whom?" His eyes narrowed as if he knew something but just wanted to confirm.
It only took me a second to realize what was happening. Being a businessman who ran his grandfather's infamous Mafia underground, things barely went past me. "I see your dad has told you."
"So it's true?" Suspicion was beginning to morph into accusatory glares.
I bounced my shoulders in a careless shrug. "Yes, it is."
"Oh, you bastard!" He leapt forward, ready for a physical brawl.
I deftly swerved and grabbed the arm he'd extended for a punch; I twisted it backwards. Firm, but not hard.
He winced in discomfort.
"I'll let you go if you promise to behave yourself." I made sure he heard the seriousness in my tone.
Grandma Charlotte, Marvin, and Zyliah were the only three persons, outside my family, who knew about my Mafia background. It wasn't something I liked to tell just about anybody, especially people like Fynn, who appeared to me like the last person that should know something that is private about me.
"Fine. Just let me go." He gritted, more angry than in pain.
I released him without hesitation. "There."
He turned to face me. "Why would you do that?"
"Do what?"
His eyes went narrower. "Don't feign ignorance with me."
"Feign ignorance?" A low chuckle was emitted. A bit amused, a bit dry. "Far from it, Fynn. I am asking what exactly you're accusing me of doing. Is it having that little talk with your father or going out with the girl you were careless with?"
"I don't fucking care about my father. You know damn well what I'm talking about." He spat, the anger not leaving his eyes.
"You don't deserve Zyliah, Fynn, and as bad as that may make you feel, it's the truth." I pointed out matter-of-factly.
If he was angry before, he was furious now. Almost steaming mad. "You don't know what you're saying? You're just a backstabber justifying actions that are more or less despicable. I thought we were friends!"
"Yes, we are. I still consider you a friend, and as a friend I'm telling you this: Zyliah doesn't want to hear of you. The mention of your name changes her mood from happy to sour. There's always this look of annoyance and boredom whenever the Delson family is talked of. Don't think I've not tried it."
"Yes, I know she will certainly be quite unfriendly with me now. But she'll come around; I know her. She used to love me so hard. I am hopeful she will come to love me again, especially when I woo her as a man is supposed to. I am ready to put in all the hard work. You promised to help me make it, if not easier, then possible."
With a wry smile in place, I gave him a rueful stare. "Stop being delusional, Fynn. You certainly have no idea who this new Zyliah is, do you? Anyways, I won't have a hand in feeding this delusion of yours. In fact, I do not want to be a part of this 'pathetic ex' party. Zyliah is done with you and your father. Move on, man."
A low growl rumbled from his throat. "Fine, I'll do it myself. But stay away from Zyliah, Kevin, or else..."
His warning struck the wrong nerve; anger speared, and the need to have my boys deal with him surged. I wasn't one to showcase anger violently. Not that I wasn't capable of it, I just wasn't raised that way.
I grabbed the finger he was wagging in my face and twisted, my expression calm, my action precise. "Don't forget who helped you empty your old man's account. Don't also forget who made sure you still have that company intact and your source of livelihood secured. Do not test the extent of my anger, mi amigo."
He bit down on his lip to keep from making a sound of the pain I knew he was feeling.
I released it. "You're lucky, Fynn. I like our friendship. Just don't talk to me in that tone anymore; it pisses me off." I clapped my hands, flashing a friendly smile his way. "One last thing, stay away from Zyliah. From what I've heard and believe to be true, she's gone through so many challenges and unnecessary drama, she doesn't need those anymore. If she doesn't like you and doesn't want to have anything to do with you anymore, that's her choice, and you have to respect that."
Massaging his index finger, helpless anger gleaming in his eyes, he asked, "What? Are you now suddenly her bodyguard?"
"You could say that." I checked the time on the custom-made diamond wristwatch clasped about my left wrist. "I have to go now. Maybe next time, we will have a drink, yes?"
"Fuck you," he spat in my face, then started heading for the exit door.
He stopped short in surprise, his gaze staring at the entrance hall. Someone was coming, and whoever it was, he recognized them.
"What are you doing here?" he asked this person.
They didn't reply.
Curious, I wanted to know who was barging in on me for the second time this morning.
A brow quirked in surprise and amusement. "Sayge Williams? What is the grandson of my godmother doing here in my house?"
"I've not come to fight, Kevin. I want us to talk." He didn't need to say it before I heard the 'please' at the end of his statement.
Fynn, now curious and interested in whatever was going on, turned to me. "His grandmother is your godmother?"
"Ah, yes. And best friends with both my parents too." I added that particular information for the shock effect. "I thought you were leaving?"
Judging from Sayge's expression, this was an important issue, and one I was ready to talk with him about. Though he tried to hide it, the agony and torture he was going through emotionally was obvious to anyone with keen, sharp eyes.
"What's going on here?" Fynn had this completely bewildered look on his face; it was almost laughable.
