Chapter 55 055

Chapter 55 055
EMILY

I parked in front of the bakery and sat there for a moment, my hands still resting on the steering wheel. I did not rush to get out. I just looked. The place was full again, just like it had been every day lately. People stood in line inside, shoulder to shoulder, waiting patiently. Others lingered outside, laughing softly as they checked their phones or talked to each other while holding paper bags and coffee cups. The windows glowed warmly from the inside, and I could see movement everywhere.

The bakery looked alive.

Busy.

Loved.

My chest felt light, like something heavy had finally lifted. I let out a slow breath and smiled without even realizing it. For a long time, I had been afraid to look at this building. Afraid of empty chairs and quiet rooms. Afraid of bad news, unpaid bills, and closed signs taped to the glass. Afraid of watching something I loved fall apart right in front of me.

Now it was the opposite.

The bakery was warm and full. It felt safe again. It felt like home. The happiness hit me so suddenly that I almost laughed to myself. I opened the car door and stepped out.

As soon as I walked inside, the little bell above the door rang softly. The sound felt familiar and comforting. The smell hit me right away. Cinnamon. Butter. Fresh bread. Sugar. The kind of smell that wrapped around you and made you want to stay. It smelled like comfort. Like effort paying off. Like something steady. Something that would not disappear overnight.

I paused just inside the door and took it all in. Customers talked quietly as they waited. The display case was full. The shelves were stocked. The staff moved with confidence, calling out orders and smiling as they worked.

I spotted Eddie behind the counter.

She was smiling as she supervised the girls attending to the customers. She moved easily from one side of the counter to the other, answering questions, checking boxes, and fixing small details without stress. She looked calm. Focused. She looked like someone who knew the business was doing well and trusted it to keep going.

When she saw me, her smile widened instantly. Her eyes lit up, and she straightened a little.

I nodded at her and subtly pointed toward my office at the back. She nodded back right away, letting me know she understood. I did not say anything out loud. I did not need to.

I walked past the counter and headed toward the back. Each step felt lighter than the last. I stepped into my office and closed the door behind me. I had just sat down at my desk and placed my bag on the chair beside me when the door opened again.

Eddie slipped inside and closed it gently behind her, like she was carrying news too important to let anyone else hear.

“We did it,” she said, barely above a whisper. Her eyes were bright, and her smile was impossible to miss.

I jumped to my feet without thinking. The chair scraped softly against the floor as I stood. I wrapped my arms around her and hugged her tight. She laughed as she hugged me back, the sound full and relieved.

“How soon are we going to be hearing from the bank again?” I asked. My voice shook just a little, caught between hope and disbelief.

She pulled back slowly and shook her head.

“Never,” she said with a wide smile. “They pulled off whatever court orders they were threatening us with. Everything is cleared. All of it.”

I froze.

The words took a moment to sink in. My mouth fell open slightly as my heart skipped.

“Oh my…” I said quietly. “I was not expecting Aaron to clear it all.”

Eddie leaned against the desk and crossed her arms. She looked excited, like she had been holding this in for too long and was finally letting it out.

“Aaron said you had a sponsor,” she explained. “Someone who does not want you to go through the stress and hassle of paying back investors or sorting out the bank.”

My stomach dropped.

A sponsor?

“A sponsor?” I repeated. “Who?”

She shrugged. “He would not say. He said the person wanted to stay anonymous.” She paused, then smiled again. “But honestly, Emily, the business is booming. We are thriving, girl.”

Emotion rushed through me all at once. Relief hit first, then joy, then something deep and warm that made my eyes sting. I hugged her again, tighter this time, holding on like I needed to feel that this was real.

“I am so happy too,” I said softly.

She squeezed me back. “You deserve this.”

Then she stepped away, opened the door, and returned to the counter. Just like that, she slipped back into work, like nothing huge had just happened.

I sat down slowly.

The office felt quiet after she left. I stared at my desk, at the small scratches and papers I had pushed aside weeks ago. My heart was racing now. My hands shook just a little as I rested them on the edge of the table.

I did not think.

I just reached for my phone.

I called Aaron.

He answered after four rings.

“Hey, pretty girl,” he said.

I chuckled softly, shaking my head. “You cleared the whole thing.”

“Your man cleared it all,” he replied easily. “Although he told me not to tell you.”

My breath caught in my throat.

“Ryan?” I asked.

Aaron laughed. “Do you have someone else in your life that I am not aware of?”

I laughed too, even though my chest felt tight. “Nope. But you and I both know he is not mine.”

His voice softened. “Your bond, Emily. I have always wanted what you both had. That bond was strong.”

I leaned back in my chair and closed my eyes. His words sat heavy in my chest.

“Well,” I said slowly, “it is not strong anymore.”

“If you say so,” he replied.

I swallowed. “Thank you, Aaron.”

“You know who to thank,” he said. “And it is not me.”

I sighed softly. “You still owe me an explanation about what is going on between you and Morgan.”

There was a short pause.

“I will see you later,” he said quickly.

Then he hung up.

I stared at my phone for a moment before lowering it. A quiet laugh escaped me as I placed my head on my desk. I stayed like that for a while, just breathing, just smiling to myself.

The bakery was doing well.

Everything was stable.

And Ryan had quietly fixed everything without saying a word.

I lifted my head slowly.

I needed to talk to Ryan.
