Chapter 14 Failed assassination.... move in with me
Lydia’s Point of View
The room was silent after Justin and Harridan left. Too silent. And Venus and Saturn were too busy in their own world.
Even the steady beep of the heart monitor felt distant, like it belonged in someone else’s world. I stared at the map Harridan gave me and the bag of Asoji buns Justin left on the bedside table.
I clenched the paper map. Wondering if I was being pranked, and if all these kind gestures were a rehearsed activity.
“Are you okay?” Saturn asked quietly.
“No,” I answered honestly, and she squeezed my hands.
Venus opened a bun from Justin’s bag and took a loud bite. “Well, at least their drama is entertaining.”
I almost smiled… until something cold slid down the back of my spine. A strange, present sensation. Almost like…someone was watching us.
I turned toward the window. Nothing.
Just hallway light spilling under the frame. Before I could speak, the door clicked open again.
A nurse stepped inside, but she wasn’t the usual one. Her uniform looked… off. Too stiff. Too new. And her ID tag was turned the wrong way.
“Miss Lydia,” she said with a low voice, and offered me a fake smile. “The doctor sent me for your checkup.”
My skin prickled. Something was wrong. The doctor was here just minutes ago to discuss my discharge, so why is a nurse here? And why is she acting clueless?
Saturn’s eyes narrowed. Venus even paused mid-chew, which meant it was serious.
“Which doctor?” I asked suspiciously.
“The one assigned to your case,” she replied without blinking.
Liar. No doctor had asked for anything after discharge discussions.
I didn't bother arguing, I sat still wondering what she was sent to do.
She moved toward my IV bag, lifting a small vial from her pocket.
“What is that?” Saturn demanded and stood up like a protective sister.
“A stabilizer,” the woman said flatly. “It will help with memory strain.”
Venus also stood up so fast the chair screeched. “That’s not hospital-issued, is it?” He asked with furrowed brows.
“Are you a trained personnel? Why are you interfering with a professional?” The nurse asked plainly.
Venus smiled broadly. “Yes, I am a trained doctor with a wide range in surgery,” he said, ready to boast once again.
Saturn rolled her eyes, murmuring; “he is so full of himself.”
The nurse’s expression didn’t change, she focused on me instead. “Miss Lydia must remain calm. This will ensure she doesn’t experience unnecessary… recollection.”
“Unnecessary recollection?” My breath hitched. She was here to stop my memories.
I reached for the hospital security call button, but she slapped my wrist aside, not hard, but sharp enough.
“Don’t make this harder,” she murmured. “Just relax.”
Relax?
Her other hand slipped into her pocket. I caught a glimpse of something metallic. A syringe.
Venus' eyes widened, “GET AWAY FROM HER!” He shouted at the top of his voice.
Saturn grabbed the nearest item, a pillow, and smacked it at the nurse’s face. It did nothing except annoy her. She moved toward me again.
Everything inside me screamed danger.
I scrambled back across the bed, ripping the IV needle from my hand. Pain flared, but adrenaline drowned it.
“Help! Someone! Anyone!” I yelled, my voice cracking. “HELP!”
The nurse lunged, and the door burst open. Not from the outside. From a kick.
Justin stormed in first, breathless, fury blazing in his eyes. Harridan was right behind him, grabbing the nurse’s wrist before she could react.
“What the hell are you doing to her?!” Justin roared at the nurse.
The nurse twisted, unnaturally strong, and yanked her arm free. Harridan staggered back.
“She wasn’t supposed to wake up this fast! She should have left quietly,” the nurse hissed.
That confirmed everything.
Justin lunged to attack her. The woman shoved a tray into his chest and bolted toward the door.
She was fast, too fast.
Harridan sprinted after her. “STOP!”
The nurse shoved open the door and darted into the hallway. Two security guards chased after her, but she disappeared around the corner impossibly quickly…..as if she knew the hospital layout too well.
Justin rushed to my side, gripping my shoulders gently. “Lydia, look at me. Did she hurt you? Did she inject anything?”
“No,” I forced out. My pulse was wild. “She… she said she needed to stop me from remembering.”
Justin’s jaw clenched so hard I heard his teeth grind. Harridan came back into the room slowly, breathing sharply, fury simmering beneath his calm mask.
“She wasn’t a nurse,” he said. “And she wasn’t human.”
Venus froze. “So she was-”
“A demon,” Harridan finished quietly.
Silence crashed over us. The pieces were falling into place, and I hated the picture they formed.
Someone didn’t want my memories back. Someone may be in the werewolf alliance.
Someone connected to my parents’ death. To my accident….to me. The Werewolf alliance uses either rogues or demons for their dirty job, this is surely their handiwork.
Justin wiped a smear of blood from my arm where the IV had torn out. His hands trembled. “I’m not letting anyone near you again. Not happening.”
Harridan’s voice lowered. “You’re not safe here. Whoever sent her… they know you’re awake. They know your memory is unstable.”
My heart thudded painfully.
“Why… why would they care if I remembered?” I whispered thoughtfully.
Harridan and Justin exchanged a look. A look full of secrets. And guilt. And fear. They've finally connected the dots to their psychotic family.
“Hmm, Lydia, do you remember Amber….Amby?” Harridan asked while Justin frowned, clearly uncomfortable.
I turned to Venus and Saturn to confirm if they knew the said person, but they shook their heads.
“Who is she? Is she the assassin or did she send them?” I asked curiously, and Harridan shrugged his shoulders.
“Since you don't remember her, we'll talk about this later. I have something to deal with,” Harridan said, and his face became cold as he brought out his phone. This was a side I had never seen, like his protective side. He nudged me and left the room.
“Will you please tell me who she is?” I asked Justin.
“My sister,” Justin replied with an unbothered look.
I furrowed my brows. “Does your sister have a reason to kill me? Why?”
Justin sat by my side, his eyes filled with emotion. “Harridan will handle this, don't worry, okay?”
Of course, I was worried! What if she comes back! What if…. What if?” Those were the questions passing through my head, and I kept wondering about my connection to the said Amby, and where she fits in my puzzle game.
“I'm getting discharged tomorrow. I need to know that I'm safe,” I said to Justin, and he nodded in understanding.
“Of course….” He paused, raising his eyes to meet mine. “How about you move in with me? I will protect you and help you regain your memories.”
