Chapter 40 Chapter 40
I didn’t sleep that night.
Adrian dropped me off without pressing, without questions I wasn’t ready to answer. He waited until I stepped inside, headlights still on, like he was making sure the ground didn’t swallow me whole the second he left.
Victor’s message burned behind my eyes.
He won’t protect you forever.
I locked the door, checked it twice, then leaned my forehead against the cool wood. My heartbeat finally caught up with me—loud, uneven, real. For the first time since everything shattered, fear crept back in. Not the helpless kind. The alert kind. The kind that tells you something has shifted.
My phone buzzed again.
Adrian: Did you get inside safely?
I exhaled slowly before typing back.
Me: Yes. Thank you for tonight.
Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Then—
Adrian: We’ll talk tomorrow. Don’t open the door for anyone.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
Me: Including you?
A pause. Then—
Adrian: Especially me.
Despite everything, I smiled.
The next morning, the city felt different. Sharper. Louder. Like it knew something I didn’t. I kept expecting to see Victor’s face in every reflection, Daniel’s car in every rearview mirror.
By noon, Adrian called.
“I’m picking you up,” he said. No greeting. No hesitation.
“For what?” I asked.
“For transparency,” he replied. “And control.”
That should have scared me.
It didn’t.
We met at his office, but he didn’t take me inside. Instead, he led me to a private conference room across the street—neutral ground.
“Victor isn’t just a ghost from your past,” Adrian said once the door closed. “He’s resurfaced in my world too.”
My stomach sank. “How?”
“He’s been buying influence quietly. Watching. Waiting.” His jaw tightened. “And now he’s testing boundaries—yours.”
“So the message was a warning,” I said.
“No,” Adrian corrected. “It was a claim.”
The word made my skin crawl.
“I won’t let him do this,” I said, my voice steadier than I felt. “I won’t go back to being hunted.”
Adrian stepped closer—not invading, just present. “You won’t. But things change now.”
“How?”
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a slim folder, placing it on the table between us.
“We accelerate,” he said. “Not the revenge. The visibility.”
I frowned. “Visibility?”
“Yes,” he said calmly. “We stop hiding the alliance.”
My pulse spiked. “You mean—”
“A public appearance,” he finished. “Together.”
I stared at him. “That sounds like chaos.”
“It’s strategy,” he replied. “Victor operates in shadows. Daniel thrives in control. We take both away.”
“And the contract?” I asked quietly.
Adrian held my gaze. “Still intact. Still clear.”
I searched his face for something reckless, something manipulative.
I found neither.
“When?” I asked.
“Tonight.”
Of course it was.
The event was a charity gala—high profile, heavily photographed, impossible to ignore. Adrian didn’t touch me when we arrived, but he didn’t leave space either. Our shoulders brushed. Our steps matched.
Cameras flashed.
Whispers followed.
I lifted my chin.
Let them look, I thought. I’m done shrinking.
Inside, the air buzzed with power and perfume. I felt it before I saw him—Daniel.
His gaze snapped to me, disbelief cracking his carefully built composure. Then Mandy appeared at his side, confusion melting into something sharper when she noticed Adrian.
Adrian leaned in, his voice low. “Breathe.”
“I am,” I said. “I think.”
“Good,” he replied. “Because this is working.”
Daniel started toward us.
Adrian turned slightly, positioning himself—not in front of me, but beside me.
“Mr. Carter,” Adrian said smoothly as Daniel stopped short. “Didn’t expect to see you.”
Daniel’s eyes flicked to me. “Elena… what is this?”
I met his stare. “An evening out.”
“With him?” Mandy snapped.
Adrian smiled. “Yes.”
The silence that followed was deafening.
Daniel recovered first. He always did. “Careful,” he warned Adrian. “She’s fragile.”
That was it.
I stepped forward. “I am not fragile,” I said clearly. “I was patient. There’s a difference.”
Mandy scoffed, but her eyes darted—uncertain.
Adrian’s hand hovered near mine. Not holding. Not claiming.
Grounding.
“We should circulate,” Adrian said politely. “Enjoy the night.”
As we walked away, I felt Daniel’s stare burn into my back.
My phone vibrated once more.
Unknown Number: This isn’t over.
I didn’t flinch this time.
I slipped my phone into my clutch and leaned closer to Adrian. “He’s watching.”
Adrian’s voice was calm, certain. “Let him.”
And as the orchestra swelled and the lights dimmed, I realized something profound—
This wasn’t just revenge anymore.
It was the beginning of a war.
And I was no longer unarmed.
