Chapter 33 CHapter 33

Chapter 33 CHapter 33
I didn’t sleep.

Not really.

I lay on Adrian’s guest bed staring at the ceiling, listening to the faint sounds of the house settling, my mind replaying everything that had happened since the accident. The betrayal. The contract. The way his arm had stayed steady beneath my head like I was something fragile instead of broken.

That scared me more than Daniel ever had.

At some point, the weight in my chest shifted—not gone, but quieter. I rested one hand over my stomach, my breath slowing as I reminded myself why I had to stay strong. For them. For me.

For the woman I was becoming.

A soft knock came at the door.

“Elena?” Adrian’s voice was low, careful. “Are you awake?”

“Yes,” I answered after a pause. “Come in.”

He opened the door slowly, already dressed, sleeves rolled up, looking far too composed for someone who had clearly slept as little as I had. He held two mugs.

“Tea,” he said. “No caffeine.”

“Planning my future already?” I asked lightly.

His lips twitched. “Planning your survival.”

I sat up and took the mug from him. Our fingers brushed again. This time, neither of us flinched—but we didn’t linger either.

“How are you feeling?” he asked.

I considered lying. Then decided not to. “Unsteady. But… clearer.”

He nodded. “Good. Because today matters.”

I frowned. “What’s today?”

“The first move,” he said simply.

My pulse quickened. “Already?”

“You don’t strike,” Adrian said calmly, “but you let your presence be known. Daniel needs to feel you again.”

I took a slow breath. “What do you want me to do?”

“Nothing dramatic,” he replied. “Just exist where he can’t ignore you.”

He handed me a tablet. On the screen was an invitation.

Blake Holdings Charity Gala.

Tonight.

My stomach tightened. “Daniel will be there.”

“Yes.”

“And Mandy.”

“Yes.”

I looked up at him. “You planned this.”

“I anticipated it,” he corrected. “They won’t expect you. Not with me.”

A flicker of fear ran through me. “What if I’m not ready?”

Adrian’s gaze softened. “You don’t have to say a word tonight. You don’t have to confront anyone. All you have to do is walk in beside me.”

I swallowed. “As what?”

His answer was quiet. Certain.

“As my fiancée.”

The word hit me harder than I expected.

“This isn’t in the contract,” I said.

“It’s not marriage,” he replied. “It’s strategy. And it will protect you.”

I searched his face. “And if I say no?”

“Then I’ll adjust the plan,” he said without hesitation. “Your consent isn’t negotiable.”

That… mattered.

I looked back at the invitation, my reflection faint in the screen. The woman staring back at me looked tired—but not weak.

“I won’t let them see me break,” I said.

“They won’t,” Adrian replied. “Because I won’t let them touch you.”

Silence stretched between us again, thick with meaning.

“Okay,” I said finally. “I’ll go.”

His eyes darkened—not with possession, but approval. “Then we should get you ready.”

Hours later, I stood in front of a mirror in a midnight-blue gown that fit me like it knew my secrets. My hair was styled simply, my makeup soft. I barely recognized myself.

Not because I looked different.

But because I looked… composed.

Adrian appeared behind me in the mirror, dressed in a black suit that made him look lethal and untouchable.

“You look…” He paused. “…strong.”

I met his eyes through the reflection. “So do you.”

When he offered his arm, I hesitated only a second before taking it.

The contact sent a quiet jolt through me—not desire, not fear.

Alignment.

As we stepped into the night together, I realized something with absolute clarity.

This wasn’t just revenge anymore.

This was transformation.

And Daniel Carter had no idea what was about to walk back into his world.
