Chapter 24: The confrontation

He laughed nervously, a little too loudly. “No, I really don’t know. I’m not hiding anything. I just… I thought you looked familiar. That’s all.”

Emma nodded slowly, forcing herself to keep her voice steady. “Okay. Thanks for letting me know.”

He nodded quickly. “I didn’t mean to… make you uncomfortable. Sorry.”

Emma straightened her shoulders. “I know.” She picked up her tray again and walked back to her table, but her stomach felt uneasy. Her mind wouldn’t stop turning over the possibilities.

Sitting down, she tried to focus on her sandwich, taking slow bites. She kept glancing at Martin out of the corner of her eye. He had returned to his own table, pretending to eat, but every few minutes she caught him looking her way again.

“Why now?” she muttered under her breath. “Why notice me now?”

Her phone buzzed, and she pulled it out. A message from Cole, Don’t stay out too long. Meetings are stacking this afternoon.

Emma typed a quick reply, trying to steady herself. Noted.

She looked back toward Martin, he was still staring. This time, she decided to confront it more directly. She stood, tray in hand, and walked over again.

“Martin,” she said, keeping her voice calm. “Are you done noticing me now, or do we need to talk about this again?”

He jumped slightly, then stammered, “I… I’m sorry. I swear I didn’t mean..”

Emma held up a hand. “I don’t want apologies. I want honesty. Have you seen me somewhere before, or not?”

He swallowed hard, looking like he wanted to run. “No! Not really. I… I don’t know. I just… you look like someone I’ve seen. That’s it. I wasn’t thinking anything else.”

Emma studied him for a long moment. She could see his nervousness was genuine. But the comment had planted a seed of worry. “You understand what I mean by familiar?”

He nodded quickly. “Yes! I mean… it’s nothing personal, really. I wasn’t thinking anything about your work or… or anything like that. Just… your face. That’s all.”

Emma exhaled slowly, trying to calm her racing thoughts. “Okay. Thank you.”

She picked up her tray again and returned to her corner, sitting down. She tried to eat, but her mind was spinning. Someone had recognized her. Or at least remembered her from somewhere.

She glanced at Martin one more time. He was pretending to read a memo on his phone, but she could tell his eyes flicked toward her now and then.

“Why now?” she whispered again, more to herself than anyone else. “Why here? Why today?”

The cafeteria was quiet now, most people had gone back to their desks or left for lunch outside. She tried to focus on the food, but her appetite had vanished. Her hands shook slightly as she picked at the sandwich.

After a few minutes, she packed up her tray and went back to the office, taking the long way around to avoid Martin if she could. But he was waiting at the elevator, pretending to check his phone again.

Emma swallowed and kept her expression neutral. “Good afternoon,” she said curtly.

“Afternoon,” he muttered, not looking up.

Her mind was still spinning. She had to be careful. One slip-up, one wrong glance, and her past could be exposed.

She reached her desk and tried to focus on work, but the words in her emails blurred together. Her thoughts kept returning to that single word, familiar.

Who had noticed her? How much did they know? And more importantly… what could it mean if someone started asking questions?

Her hands hovered over the keyboard, hesitant. She forced herself to start typing. She couldn’t let panic take over, not here, not at work.

But every few seconds, her eyes flicked to the elevator, to the doorway, anywhere she might catch another glance.

By the time she looked up again, the office was mostly empty. Everyone else had returned to their tasks, but the knot in her stomach wouldn’t loosen.

Emma leaned back in her chair, exhaling slowly. She typed mechanically, going through emails and schedules, but her mind was elsewhere.

She couldn’t shake the thought, someone in this office had noticed her. And if Martin had seen her, who else might be watching?

Her phone buzzed again. Another message from Cole, Everything okay?

Emma stared at it, fingers hovering. She typed quickly, Yes. Just busy.

Then she paused, staring at the screen. Busy… was that really true? Or was she just trying to keep control of a situation that felt like it was slipping through her fingers?

Emma walked toward the break room, figuring a little fresh air or at least a change of scenery might help her think.

When she stepped in, Martin was already there, pouring himself a cup of coffee. He froze when he saw her and looked like he wanted to vanish.

“Martin,” she said, keeping her tone calm but firm. “Can we talk?”

He swallowed hard. “Uh… yeah. Sure. I mean, if you want to.”

She nodded and motioned toward a quiet corner. “Just a minute. Away from everyone else.”

He followed hesitantly, and they stood a few feet apart. Emma crossed her arms. “Why did you say I looked familiar?”

He shifted his weight nervously. “I told you, i don’t know. I just thought I had seen you somewhere before.”

“Somewhere before?” Her voice tightened slightly. “Do you mean at work, outside of work… what?”

He ran a hand through his hair, looking like he was about to say something he didn’t want to. “I don’t know, okay? It was just a feeling. I didn’t think it mattered. I swear, I wasn’t trying to make you uncomfortable.”

Emma kept her gaze on him, studying his reaction. He seemed honest, but she couldn’t be sure. Her stomach churned. “Martin… this is serious. You can’t just say things like that about someone without thinking about the consequences.”

“I know! I really didn’t mean anything by it,” he said quickly. “I just… your face, That’s all. I didn’t connect it to anything else, I swear.”

Emma exhaled slowly, trying to calm herself. She hated that she felt exposed, but she needed to know the truth. “Listen, I need you to be completely honest with me. Have you said anything to anyone else?”

His eyes widened. “No! I didn’t. I haven’t. I promise. You’re the first person I’ve even mentioned it to.”

“Good,” she said, though her voice was tight. “Because if anyone else starts asking questions, you have to tell them you don’t know me. You understand?”

He nodded quickly. “Yes! Absolutely. I understand.”

Emma’s mind was still racing, but she forced herself to take a deep breath. “Okay. Just… be careful. I can’t have anyone digging into my past. Do you understand how serious that is?”

“I do,” he said, more firmly this time. “I get it.”

She nodded, letting the tension ease slightly. “Good. Then that’s all I need from you.”

“Now, I’m going back to my desk. And you? You’re going back to yours. Keep this between us.” She said.

He nodded again, almost saluting. “Yes. Absolutely, it's between us.
”

Emma walked back to her desk, forcing herself to focus on her computer. She typed mechanically, but her thoughts were a jumble. How had Martin recognized her? And more importantly, who else might recognize her if someone else started paying attention?
