Reinforcement
Reinforcement
Sera's POV
The heat on my chest eased at his words, and I dropped his arms, catching my breath back. I never knew I had even held it before. I spoke, trying to look past the UV light at the hunters force. “First, we would need to find the power source for the UV light. I figured the hunters came with a generator. And considering how important the lights are, the generator would be heavily protected, meaning it would be somewhere behind the main force.” I turned to him after, making sure he was listening. “Can we get some reinforcement?” I asked.
He shook his head a little. “Not so much. The backup force isn't enough because we don't believe in backups, and the last war between the princes drained so much of our forces. Much of what we have are the elites. They are few in number, and some of them are fat and out of shape. They haven't been in wars in centuries.”
“Still, we have no choice but to use them. Find a way to contact them and bring them here. When they get here, we will discuss the plans further. But for now, let's destroy the UV lights to reduce the casualty on our side. Gather enough men. Perhaps twenty, and then together we will find out where the generator is and destroy it.” I said.
He grinned with the whole of his face, and he patted my shoulder gently. “You are quite a natural as a queen. It's a shame you are only human,”
“Actually, I’m half.” I told him. “I am partly a Kitsune. Fox spirit or something. I don't really know what it means.” It was odd telling someone else about me. What has really come over me! I bowed away to myself.
“That kind of explains so much, Queen.” He said.
“Explains what?” I demanded, my tone kind of sharp. My eyes drifted to my body as I became aware he was slowly checking me out.
“Explains why you look so beautiful and young yet experienced, despite your age. But why have you never used that side of you? It would make you a far greater fighter than you already are.”
I raised my head to him then. “I don't know. I think it is just lying dormant inside of me.”
“It isn’t lying dormant, Queen. You just haven't reached for it yet. Try reaching for it.”
Before I could ask how, a wisp of air had replaced him in front of me. I steeled my fingers around my swords, turning around and watching the strategic, brutal massacre around me. And for once in my life, I felt my heart break seeing vampires die. I had always glorified their deaths, always prayed for it. But now, all I could feel was a tightness in my chest, consuming me whole.
For once in my life, I felt like I truly belonged to something.
Fury sizzled through my veins, the heat burning me up from the inside. I grunted as a grand hunter charged into the midst of burning vampires under the UV lights, rotating like a spinning wheel with his swords, slicing them down as they burned. The bastard! I was about to charge into the scene when I heard voices behind me.
I turned around to a wall of vampires, thick, burly ones. They seemed to have spent all their lives in the gyms. “We are here, our queen. Available at your command,” the vampires chanted in unison, bowing their heads, their tone subservient and respectful.
I had no idea if that was genuine or not. But I caught their gazes straying to Fabian. And that told me all I needed to know. I was still far from being their queen. “Fabian must have explained what we need to do, so let's go.”
“Let's go then, Queen.” Fabian snatched my hand, pulling me fast into his arms.
He stared down at me as he traced me away, his eyes tracing my face too, gleaming with a naughty twinkle.
Even though he held me so close that I could feel the warmth of his body, I still felt nothing around him. Nothing like what I usually felt around my grooms, Cassian and especially Adrian. The magical force of fire that rippled through my soul at their touch.
“You realize I am your king's bride, your queen.” I told him.
“Yeah. I know.” He grinned. “Nothing says I can't flirt with the queen. You are still a not-so-powerful queen, and Cassian isn't here to castrate me, so I am fine.”
I was still thinking of my reply to that when we landed behind the Hunters force. My legs sank into the bed of fluffy snow as he dropped me.
I spotted a group ahead of us, hiding under the shade of the small, deflowered trees, frosted in snow. “There!” I yelled, and I threw my arm forward, pointing to the spot.
Instantly, he picks me up again, tracing me to the spot. The hunters guarding the generators turned to us, drawing out their weapons to fight, just as Fabian and the other vampires charged for them.
I stood back, waiting behind, quietly reviewing Fabian's words from earlier. I had to reach for the Kitsune spirit and its powers inside of me. What does that really mean? I scratched my hair with the hilt of my sword.
I stared down at myself, and I shrugged my shoulders. Perhaps I should just try talking to the damn spirit in my head. I shut my eyes and closed my ears to the growls, grunts, and yells from the fight happening around me. And I reached deep into my soul.
Come on out, Kitsune! Come on out, damn you! I screamed inside my own head, yelling for its presence. I didn't know how it happened, but suddenly, I felt a strange force of energy pushing deep into my veins, making me vibrate on the spot I was.
I opened my eyes, and I saw a glowing orange light, seeping from my skin, forming a coat all over me. I suddenly felt more powerful, felt stronger than I have ever been. I smiled down at myself.
I held my sword, and I charged into the fight, swinging for the hunters. I moved faster now, faster like I used to when I took Nix’s potions. She was stronger too. I swung my sword at a hunter, and instead of just taking only that hunter out, my sword took down two other hunters with it. I grinned at myself just as the orange cloak extended to the sword too.
The last of the hunters fell, and Fabian dropped forward into my view, his upper lip raised in a rather naughty yet pleased smirk. “You have awakened your kitsune spirit.” He commented, taking me in slowly. “You look good and more beautiful wrapped around your kitsune cloak. Warn me not to cross you, my queen.”
While he spoke, the other vampires vandalized the generator.
I folded back my sword while I turned back, looking ahead at the battlefield to find the UV lights blurring off one after another.
“Stop trying to flirt with me, Fabian. I am still your queen. I can do the castration in Cassian's absence.” I said to him, sounding stern yet returning his smile. Somehow, I felt uncomfortable with his attitude, and at the same time, I seemed to enjoy it. What would I say? I am such an enigma even to myself.
“I look forward to it, my queen.” He teased, and before I could stop him again. He’d pulled me to his body, tracing me away.
We landed in the middle of the fight scene once again. Sigurd and Roman traced to us now. They looked hideous with half their bodies burnt off; their faces looked like raw and cooked meat stitched together. One side told of how handsome they had once been, the other telling how they got cooked off like meat on a grill.
“Where were you both?” Sigurd sneered, eyeing me and Fabian. “Shouldn't you have been helping out? More than half our forces are dead because you both decided to stay idle.”
“Or rather, we were helping. The rest of our forces are still living because we decided to act smarter than your asses. We took out the UV lights for you,” Fabian challenged. Though he just growled at Sigurd, he still smiled, as if he just enjoyed what he did.
“And why do you glow like you just swallowed a fluorescent bulb?” Sigurd’s gaze narrowed on me, his lips twisted in a hard frown. Roman just hissed, turning away from us to the battlefield once again.
“That’s because I am a kitsune, and I just unlocked my spirit.”
His upper lip curled in a larger sneer. “Kitsune my foot,” he snorted.
Adrenaline surged through me, and I almost pulled out my sword to strike his head down. But I clenched my teeth hard, my jaw ached, as I tried to fight back my anger. How I wished I could just fucking kill him.
“You will show your queen some respect now, Sigurd.” Fabian yelled at him, looking serious now. He stepped forward now, towards Sigurd and Roman. The muscles of his back strained against the tight henley shirt he wore.
Roman did nothing, but Sigurd stepped forward, raising his neck high and proud, challenging Fabian. “And if I don't.” He sneered, looking Fabian right in the eye.
“Then I will have you punished. You might be Cassian's right-hand man, but I control his elites. I am his prime minister and the ruler in his absence.” Fabian returned, a dark edge to his voice. Somehow, he’d shifted from the flirty, playful bastard taunting me since to a tough, serious vampire.
Sigurd swallowed, staying speechless for a while, while still looking at Fabian straight in the eyeball. He eventually moved his lips. “Okay, Fabian.” He grunted. “But this isn't the end. When your bloody queen fumbles up this war, I will be there to push for both of your heads.” He said. Then he stepped back.
Fabian just growled, the noise of his teeth grating the other filled the air, almost like sandpaper scraping wood. He dropped back from Fabian and Roman, and he turned to me.
“What next, my queen?” He asked.
I wanted to speak when a larger force of big-bodied vampires, mostly fat and chubby, dropped around us. The ground vibrated briefly from the strength of their bodies. The Elites vampires.
