Chapter 24 Strange texts
RAIN's POV
I stood in the kitchen on the first morning, fingers twisted together, rehearsing my resignation while the twins ate their cereal in unsettling silence. Rosee wasn’t there. He rarely was lately. When he was, it felt like the air tightened around him, like the house itself was holding its breath.
“I think I need to talk to Mr. Rosee I said carefully to precious.
Noah looked up first. His eyes searched my face.
“Are you leaving?”
Lia didn’t look up. “She always says that.”
“I’m not always,” I stopped myself and softened my voice. “I just… might need to.”
“Because of us?” Noah face dropped.
“No,” I said quickly. “Not because of you.”
“They always leave, why should she be exempted."
That hit harder than it should have.
When Rosee finally appeared later that day, jacket on, phone to his ear, already halfway out the door, he didn’t even let me finish a sentence.
“Heard you wanted to quit. The contract is six months,” he said flatly. “If you want out, speak to legal.”
And just like that, I was trapped again.
For some reasons unknown Rosee has been cold towards me since I shift.
That night, I lay awake staring at the ceiling, waiting for my wolf.
She didn’t come.
Just thick silence. I pressed my hand to my chest, panic curling tight and ugly.
“Please,” I whispered. “Say something.”
That was when I called Annabelle.
She picked up on the third ring. “Rain?”
“I think something is wrong with me,” I said, my voice cracking before I could stop it.
She sighed softly. “Okay. Start from the beginning.”
So I did. The failed shift. The silence. The twins. Rosee. The way my skin felt too tight some days, like I didn’t fully fit inside myself anymore.
“I looked it up,” I admitted. “On WolfNet. There was this case where a wolf went dormant after a trauma bond shock. It said...”
“Rain,” Annabelle interrupted gently, “you’re spiraling.”
“I’m scared,” I whispered. “And Rosee’s been acting strange. Rosee won’t even talk about that night. Every time I bring it up, he shuts me down.”
“Because he’s hiding something,” she said. “Or because he’s afraid of what it means.”
“That doesn’t help.”
She paused. “Listen to me. You’re safe. You’re still you. Wolves don’t disappear. They wait.”
“I don’t like waiting.”
“I know,” she said softly. “But don’t make decisions from fear. Observe. Breathe. And Rain?”
“Yes?”
“If something feels wrong then get out.”
I promised her I would.
I didn’t know how badly I’d fail at that promise.
The next morning, I received a strange text.
"I know I have been acting weird but I like you."
I stared at my phone, heart stuttering.
The contact name was Rosee.
My hands shook as I typed back.
"This is inappropriate. Please stop."
Another message came seconds later.
"I think about you when you’re not here."
I didn’t reply.
The messages kept coming. Through the day. Through the night. Confessions. Longing. Things that made no sense with the man who barely looked at me.
The strange thing is whenever I'm around him, he acts cold and unbothered like he didn't sent those texts.
On the third night, rain hammered against the windows, thunder shaking the house.
My phone buzzed.
"Come to my room. Please I need you."
I stared at the screen.
It was from him.
My body felt restless and overheated. My skin sensitive. I started ovulation two days so I have been uncomfortable and horny.
I changed without thinking. Slipped into his room. Laid on his bed, heart pounding waiting for him.
The door opened and Rosee froze.
His eyes dropped to my bare shoulders. My thighs. The way I was breathing.
“What the hell are you doing?” he demanded.
“You told me to come,” I whispered.
“I didn’t—” He stopped. His expression shifted. Darkened. He stepped closer.
His hand cupped my jaw. His mouth crashed into mine.
For one dizzy moment, I melted.
Then his eyes cleared. He pulled back like I’d burned him.
“Get out,” he snapped.
“What?”
“You think you can seduce me?” His voice was ice. “Get out. Now.”
"I'm not trying to seduce you, you sent me a text." I stammered.
"Why would I ask you to come to my room at the middle of the night."
"See!" I brought out my phone to show him. Lo and behold the texts were gone. Everything.
He looked at the phone, at me and then scoffed.
"Are you pulling my legs right now?' he raised his voice.
"I- I swear I received texts from you to come to your room." My hands started shaking.
"Where did it disappear to?" I was confused.
"Look Rain, I know we have lots of ups recently, and I know I saved you from bad situations but I did it because you are my kids babysitter. No string attached. Why would you fall in love just because I saved you. Are you that...?" He paused nd I already guessed the word he wanted to say.
I stumbled past him, humiliated, confused, shaking.
That's it! I'm quitting tomorrow.
