Chapter 100 The Cage of Kings

Chapter 100 The Cage of Kings
Damiano woke to iron.

Cold. Unforgiving. A ring around his wrists.

Another around his ankles. Chains bolted into stone.

For a heartbeat, he thought he was dead.

Then pain reminded him otherwise.

His head throbbed. His mouth tasted like blood and dust. The ceiling above was too low, too close, carved with ancient symbols that watched him like eyes.

A cage.

Not bars. Not walls.

A throne-room prison.

He exhaled slowly, testing his restraints. The chains did not move. They hummed low, almost alive. Power-bound. Old magic.

Of course.

“They forged those for kings,” a voice said.
Damiano lifted his head.

Lorenzo stood beyond the circle of runes, hands clasped behind his back, immaculate in black. Calm. Composed. Smiling like a man admiring his favorite weapon.

“Welcome,” Lorenzo continued, stepping closer. “To the Cage of Kings.”

Damiano’s jaw tightened. “You always had a flair for drama.”

Lorenzo chuckled. “And you always had a talent for underestimating me.”

He stopped just outside the runic circle, close enough that Damiano could see the faint scars at his throat. Old battles. Old betrayals.

“You betrayed me,” Damiano said quietly.

Lorenzo’s smile thinned. “No. I replaced you.”

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Loaded.

Damiano’s eyes burned. “You swore.”

“I lied.”

The word landed clean. Sharp. Final.

Lorenzo turned, pacing slowly around the circle, eyes never leaving Damiano. “Do you know what your greatest flaw is, cousin?”

Damiano didn’t answer.

“You believe loyalty is mutual,” Lorenzo continued. “You believe blood means protection.”

He stopped. “Blood means leverage.”

Damiano’s hands curled in the chains. “What do you want?”

Lorenzo’s eyes gleamed. “Oh, I already have what I want.”

He gestured.

The runes flared.

Pain lanced through Damiano’s chest like fire.

He bit back a cry, muscles locking, vision blurring.

Lorenzo watched, fascinated. “Do you feel that? That pull?”

Damiano forced his breathing steady. “What did you do?”

“I didn’t do anything,” Lorenzo said lightly.

“You did. By being born.”

He stepped closer again. “You see, my dear cousin… you are not just a king.”

Damiano’s gaze sharpened.

“You are a key.”

The word echoed.

Lorenzo leaned in, voice lowering. “A legal blood trigger to multiple thrones.”

Damiano stilled.

“What,” he said flatly.

Lorenzo smiled. “Oh, you didn’t know. Of course you didn’t. Your father was very good at hiding things.”

He straightened, beginning to circle again.

“The Northern Crown. The Ash Dominion.

The Old City. Even the Black Courts.”

Damiano’s pulse pounded.

“You carry blood rights in all of them,”

Lorenzo continued. “Through marriages, treaties, forgotten lines. Ancient clauses no one reads anymore.”

He stopped in front of Damiano. “Until now.”

Damiano’s laugh was bitter. “You expect me to believe that.”

Lorenzo tilted his head. “You already do.”

Silence.

Then Damiano’s voice dropped. “That’s why you didn’t kill me.”

Lorenzo’s eyes sparkled. “Brilliant.”

“You need me alive,” Damiano said. “To
activate them.”

“For now.”

The words chilled the air.

Damiano’s jaw tightened. “You won’t get them.”

Lorenzo laughed. “You don’t get a vote.”

He snapped his fingers.

Two guards stepped forward, dragging a table into view. On it are documents. Sealed. Rings.

Royal insignia.

Lorenzo gestured. “Each of these houses has a clause. A blood trigger. A failsafe.”

Damiano stared. “You’re insane.”

“No,” Lorenzo corrected. “I’m prepared.”

He picked up a ring, turning it between his fingers. “All I need… is your blood.”

Damiano lunged instinctively, chains yanking him back. Pain flared. He hissed, muscles straining.

Lorenzo didn’t flinch. “Temper, temper. This is why they never let you play politics.”

Damiano’s chest rose and fell. “You think they will accept you.”

Lorenzo shrugged. “They don’t need to like me. They just need you… dead.”

The word echoed.

Dead.

Damiano’s breath caught.

Lorenzo’s smile was slow. “Because once you’re gone, the rights pass.”

Damiano’s eyes narrowed. “To whom?”

Lorenzo met his gaze. “To the nearest blood.”

Silence crashed.

Damiano’s mind raced.

“You,” he said.

Lorenzo inclined his head. “Me.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“You killed your own brother,” Damiano whispered.

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened, just for a flicker.

Then smoothed. “He was… in the way.”

Damiano stared at him, something breaking behind his eyes. “You’re a monster.”

Lorenzo smiled. “And you’re a liability.”

He stepped back, gesturing toward the guards. “Prepare the chamber.”

The guards moved.

Damiano’s pulse spiked. “For what.”

Lorenzo turned. “The trial.”

Damiano barked a laugh. “Trial? For what crime.”

Lorenzo’s eyes were cold. “Treason. Sedition. Inciting rebellion.”

Damiano’s gaze sharpened. “You fabricated charges.”

“Of course,” Lorenzo said easily. “That’s how power works.”

He leaned closer, voice dropping. “Did you really think they would let you walk away after burning half the council and defying the elders?”

Damiano’s jaw clenched. “Seraphina…”

Lorenzo’s eyes flicked. “Ah. Yes. Her.”

The way he said it made Damiano’s blood run cold.

“She is… inconvenient,” Lorenzo continued.

“But you, my dear cousin, are… necessary.”

Damiano swallowed. “What did you do to her?”

Lorenzo smiled. “Nothing.”

The word was too quick.
Damiano strained forward. “Where is she?”

“Not here,” Lorenzo replied. “And soon… neither will you be.”

He straightened, smoothing his coat. “The execution is scheduled.”

Damiano’s breath hitched.

“When,” he demanded.

Lorenzo met his gaze. “At dawn.”

The word landed like a gunshot.

Damiano went still.

Too still.

Lorenzo watched him, eyes narrowing. “No last words? No please?”

Damiano’s voice was quiet. Steady. “You’re afraid.”

Lorenzo’s smile twitched. “Of you? Hardly.”

“Of what happens after,” Damiano continued.

“Of what I unleash when I die.”

Lorenzo’s eyes darkened. “You won’t unleash anything.”

Damiano smiled. Not kind. Not soft. “You don’t know her.”

Lorenzo frowned. “Who.”

“Seraphina.”

The name hung in the air.

Lorenzo scoffed. “She’s one woman.”

Damiano’s gaze burned. “She is at war.”

Silence.

Then Lorenzo laughed. “You’re delirious.”

Damiano leaned forward as far as the chains allowed. “She will burn your world.”

Lorenzo’s smile faded.

Just a fraction.

Then he turned. “We’ll see.”

He walked toward the exit.

Damiano called after him. “You will choke on this throne.”

Lorenzo paused.

Slowly turned.

His eyes were empty. “Enjoy your night, cousin.”

The doors slammed.

Darkness swallowed the room.

The runes dimmed.

The chains hummed.

Damiano sagged slightly, breath shuddering.

Dawn.

The word echoed.

Execution.

His jaw tightened.

He closed his eyes.

And in the darkness, he saw her.

Fire in her eyes. Blood on her hands. Power
in her bones.

“Come,” he whispered. “Please.”

The cage answered with silence.

Far above, bells began to toll.
Slow.

Measured.

Counting down.

A shadow moved at the edge of the chamber.

A voice whispered from the dark…

“Your death will crown him… unless she arrives.”
