Chapter 75 Actions Have Consequences
Chapter 75 Actions Have Consequences
Anna's POV
The air in the boardroom feels tight—pressurized—like a storm has been sealed behind glass and is waiting for someone to breathe wrong.
Bella stands at the far end of the table, hands braced against the polished wood, knuckles pale. Portia and Elena flank her, close enough that their shoulders touch, a quiet show of solidarity that feels fragile and brave all at once. I can see it in Bella’s eyes—the moment she’s been building toward, the line she’s about to cross that she knows she can never uncross.
Courtney’s tablet glows on the table, frozen on timelines and metadata that have already shaken the room. Board members whisper urgently to one another. Someone’s legal counsel is mid-text, thumbs flying.
Bella inhales.
“My father—” she begins.
The doors slam open. The sound is violent enough to make several people flinch. Peter Ramsey strides into the room like he owns it, suit immaculate, hair perfect, expression already shaped into something sorrowful and controlled. He looks nothing like a man caught off guard. He looks like a man who has rehearsed this moment in front of a mirror.
Bella freezes.
Her sisters stiffen visibly, their confidence evaporating into shock so raw it hurts to witness. Portia actually takes a step back, as if instinctively trying to put distance between herself and him.
“Bella,” Peter Ramsey says, voice thick with manufactured concern. “What on earth are you doing?”
His eyes sweep the room, landing briefly on Marcus and his brothers, then on me and Courtney—dismissive, assessing—before returning to the board members.
“I rushed over the moment I heard about this unsanctioned meeting,” he continues smoothly. “Richard’s company is under tremendous strain, and the last thing it needs right now is internal confusion fueled by… misunderstandings.”
Misunderstandings.
Marcus steps forward before anyone else can speak.
“No,” he says calmly. “What it doesn’t need is you pretending to be a savior while you’re holding the knife.”
Every head in the room turns.
Peter Ramsey smiles, slow and indulgent, like he’s humoring a child. “Marcus, I understand emotions are running high. Your father’s health, your injury—it’s been a difficult season for you.”
The way he says season makes my skin crawl.
“But this kind of accusation?” Ramsey continues. “It’s reckless. I came here to ensure McKay Enterprises survives this scandal with its reputation intact.”
“We know what you did,” Marcus replies evenly.
Silence slams down hard.
Ramsey’s smile falters—just a fraction—but I catch it. Bella catches it too. Her breath stutters.
“I’m not sure what you think you know,” Ramsey says carefully, “but I assure you—”
“You leveraged one of your consulting subsidiaries to rush approvals on McKay equipment batches,” Marcus cuts in. “You pressured quality-control signoffs. You timed distribution around peak exposure events. And when the failure happened, you positioned yourself as the concerned partner ready to step in.”
Courtney speaks next, voice razor-sharp. “We have metadata, internal routing logs, and third-party confirmations. Enough to establish intent.”
Ramsey laughs lightly, spreading his hands. “Conspiracy theories. You’re all grieving. Stressed. Looking for someone to blame.”
Then he turns back to Bella.
“Sweetheart,” he says gently, “you don’t understand how these things work. Adults handle problems quietly.”
Bella’s jaw trembles.
Damian lets out a short, incredulous laugh. “You really think this is about misunderstanding?”
Peter Ramsey’s gaze sharpens. “I think this is about preserving relationships. Futures. Business marriages that have been in motion for years.”
Peter laughs outright.
“Future in-laws?” he says, shaking his head. “That’s adorable.”
Ramsey’s smile tightens. “Careful.”
“No,” Damian says flatly. “You be careful. You assumed we’d keep playing along.”
Marcus moves another step forward, placing himself squarely between Ramsey and Bella.
“You don’t get to tear my father’s legacy to the ground so you can rebuild it in your image,” Marcus says. “Not while pretending you’re helping.”
Ramsey’s tone cools. “You’re making a mistake. Severing ties like this will cost you everything.”
Damian’s laugh is sharp and humorless. “You really thought those arrangements would still move forward?”
Peter adds, “Yeah—newsflash. None of us are marrying into your empire.”
The room hums with shock.
Ramsey’s composure finally cracks, irritation flashing through the mask. “You’re throwing away power.”
“No,” Marcus replies. “We’re choosing integrity.”
Bella steps forward. The movement is small—but seismic.
“I heard you,” she says, voice shaking but clear. “In your office. Talking about timing. Pressure points. About how to ruin McKay Enterprises just enough to absorb it.”
Ramsey turns sharply. “Bella.”
“You talked about the athlete like collateral damage,” she continues, tears pooling but not falling. “Like a cost of doing business.”
Portia and Elena step in beside her again, shoulders squared now, fear hardening into resolve.
“I won’t be quiet anymore,” Bella says. “I won’t protect you.”
For the first time, Peter Ramsey looks genuinely angry.
“You have no idea what you’re doing,” he snaps.
Bella lifts her chin. “I do.”
She reaches into her bag and pulls out a slim folder, placing it on the table with a decisive thud.
“Audio logs. Partial transcripts. Server directories,” she says. “And timestamps that align perfectly with the failures.”
Before anyone can react—
Sirens wail outside. The sound grows louder, unmistakable. Red and blue lights flash against the glass walls of the boardroom, splintering across the polished table like fractured truth.
The doors open again. This time, it’s the FBI.
Uniformed officers and federal agents step inside with practiced calm, badges visible, eyes already locking onto Peter Ramsey.
“Peter Ramsey,” one of them says clearly. “You are under investigation for corporate sabotage, fraud, and conspiracy resulting in grievous bodily harm.”
Bella gasps softly. Portia and Elena grip her arms. Ramsey’s face drains of color.
“This is outrageous,” he snaps. “You can’t—”
The agent raises a hand. “Sir, you need to step away from the table.”
Ramsey’s eyes flick wildly around the room—board members, lawyers, Marcus, Damian, Peter, Bella.
“This isn’t over,” he spits. “You think you’ve won?”
Marcus meets his gaze without blinking. “No. We think the truth did.”
As officers move in, Bella’s knees buckle. I step forward instinctively, catching her elbow, steadying her as the world finally tilts the way it should have long ago.
She looks at me, eyes shattered and relieved all at once.
“I did it,” she whispers.
“Yes,” I say softly. “You did.”
As Peter Ramsey is escorted out, the boardroom erupts into chaos—phones ringing, voices overlapping, damage-control instincts kicking in too late. Marcus turns toward his brothers.
Damian nods once. Peter exhales, long and shaky. Marcus’s hand finds mine, grounding and warm.
And as the doors shut behind the agents, I know—deep in my bones—that whatever comes next for us, it will be built on truth.
Not fear.
Not silence.
And not the lies of men who thought they could destroy lives without consequence.
