Valentin's Real Shape
Valentin's arm went right through the blue screen like it was nothing. The baby's safety bubble broke, releasing blue sparks all over the place. As the pieces of light fell around them, Rory held her child even tighter.
Max yelled "No!" and lunged forward, but Valentin threw him off with strength that seemed impossible.
Valentin laughed and asked, "Did you really think a baby could stop me?" His skin rippled weirdly, like TV static.
Henri shone the quantum stabilizer at Valentin, but he just smiled. "That won't work on me, Professor."
She took a step back, her eyes wide with fear. "Stay away from my baby!"
Valentin's body suddenly changed. His skin became see-through, showing glowing wires running beneath. His eyes turned from human to glowing blue screens. Even his voice sounded different – less human, more like a robot.
"What are you?" Sofia whispered.
Valentin spread his arms. "I am the next step. Not human anymore. Not machine either. I'm what comes after both."
The baby squirmed in Rory's arms, his tiny face serious. DANGER. NOT REAL PERSON.
"Smart child," Valentin said, his mouth moving but the voice coming from everywhere around them. "I'm not a 'real person' anymore. I've become something better."
"You've become a monster," Max said, getting back to his feet.
Valentin laughed. "Monster? No. I've evolved. This body you see isn't even real." He waved his hand through the observatory fence, passing right through it like a ghost. "It's just a projection."
"A projection?" Henri asked, his scientific interest showing even now. "From where?"
"From everywhere," Valentin answered. "My mind exists across multiple realities at once. I've spread myself through the quantum web."
Rory felt a cold fear creeping up her spine. "That's not possible."
"It wasn't," Valentin agreed. "Until I made it possible. Ten years of experiments. Countless failures. But finally, success." He pointed to his glowing form. "I don't just move between realities like Alexander. I exist in all of them at once."
The baby let out a small cry. BAD MAN COPIED ME.
Valentin's fake smile dropped. "No, child. You copied ME. I did this first. You just happened to be born with what I had to build."
The realization hit Rory like a lightning bolt. "That's why you've been after our baby. You're jealous."
"Jealous?" Valentin's face twisted. "Your child is a fluke. A cosmic accident. I engineered my evolution through science and will."
Thunder cracked overhead as the void tear grew bigger. Through it, they could see dozens of different worlds, all broken and splitting.
"You're destroying everything," Camille said, fear in her voice.
"I'm not destroying anything," Valentin amended. "I'm becoming everything. Every reality, every possibility – they'll all be part of me soon."
Max moved closer to Rory and the baby. "You're insane."
"I'm inevitable," Valentin answered. "Alexander thinks restoring the Prime Reality will fix things. He's wrong. The future isn't one reality – it's all realities. United under one consciousness. Mine."
The baby's field flared briefly. WRONG PATH. BALANCE NEEDED, NOT CONTROL.
"Balance?" Valentin laughed. "Balance is weakness. Why balance what you can rule?"
Henri stepped forward. "The quantum network wasn't designed for this. You'll tear reality apart trying to control it."
"A necessary risk," Valentin shrugged. "Some worlds will die so that others can live under my guidance."
"Guidance? You mean control," Rory said, rage replacing her fear. "You want to be the god of everything."
"Someone has to be," Valentin answered simply. "Better me than chaos."
The baby's field pulsed again, stronger this time. FAMILY PATTERN STILL OPTION. STILL TIME.
"The family pattern won't work," Valentin said, looking to the baby. "Not anymore. Reality is too far gone."
"You don't know that," Max countered.
"I know everything," Valentin replied. "I see all possible futures from here. And in none of them does your family pattern succeed."
Rory looked at the others, desperation in her eyes. "He's lying. He has to be."
"Am I?" Valentin asked, his voice almost kind. "Look around you. Look at the sky."
The tear had grown even bigger. Through it, they could see worlds falling, folding in on themselves like paper being crumpled.
"It's too late," Valentin continued. "But I'm offering you a place in what comes next. All of you. Join me. Be part of the new order."
"Never," Rory spat.
"You don't have a choice," Valentin said. His form began to grow, spreading like smoke, filling the observatory. "The child is the key. With him, I can finish what I started."
The baby's field flashed in warning. WANT MY POWER. WANT TO TAKE ME.
"Take you?" Valentin laughed, the sound echoing weirdly. "No, child. I want to merge with you. Together, we'll be unstoppable."
"Over my dead body," Rory growled, backing away.
"If necessary," Valentin agreed coldly.
Max jumped between them. "You'll have to go through me first."
"And me," Henri added, stepping up beside his son-in-law.
"And me," Camille joined them, making a protective wall around Rory and the baby.
Valentin looked at them with something like sorrow. "The family pattern. So predictable." He shook his head. "Alexander was right about one thing. Families are powerful quantum anchors. That's why I had to break yours apart all those years ago."
Camille gasped. "What are you saying?"
"Who do you think pushed Alexander to target the Dumonts?" Valentin asked. "Who whispered in his ear about Henri's research? Who made sure your families stayed enemies for generations?"
"You?" Henri's face paled. "But that's impossible. You weren't even born when our families first split."
"Wasn't I?" Valentin smiled. "Time works differently when you exist across multiple realities. I've been guiding both your families for longer than you know."
The baby squirmed suddenly, his eyes wide. TRUTH! BIG TRUTH COMING!
"What truth?" Rory asked, looking down at her child.
Valentin's smile got wider. "Should I tell them, or should you, Henri?"
All eyes turned to Henri, whose face had gone totally white.
"Dad?" Rory asked. "What's he talking about?"
Henri's hands shook. "I... I don't know."
"Liar," Valentin hissed. "Tell them about 1923. Tell them what really happened between the Dumonts and the Rykards."
"I don't know what happened in 1923," Henri maintained. "That was before my time."
"But you found out, didn't you?" Valentin pushed. "You found your grandfather's journals. You know the truth."
The baby's field pulsed urgently. TELL TRUTH. PATTERN NEEDS TRUTH.
Henri looked at Camille, who nodded slightly, her eyes full of tears.
"Tell them," she whispered. "It's time."
Henri took a deep breath. "The Dumonts and Rykards weren't always enemies. In 1923, they were partners. More than partners. Family."
"Family?" Max repeated, confused.
"My grandfather had a sister," Henri continued, his voice getting stronger. "Her name was Eloise Dumont. She married Jonathan Rykard."
"What?" Max and Rory said together.
"Their marriage was supposed to unite our families forever," Henri said. "But something happened. Jonathan was found dead. Eloise was blamed. The families split."
"And the rest is history," Valentin ended with a smirk. "Or should I say, the rest was my doing."
Before anyone could react, Valentin's form suddenly expanded, engulfing the entire observatory in swirling light.
"Enough talk," his voice boomed from everywhere. "The time has come."
Tendrils of energy reached for the baby. Rory tried to run, but her feet wouldn't move.
"Max!" she screamed.
The baby's field flared one last time, desperate. FAMILY SECRET NOT COMPLETE. NEED FINAL TRUTH!
As Valentin's energy closed in around them, Henri's words cut through the chaos.
"Eloise didn't kill Jonathan," he yelled. "She was protecting their child. A child who carried both Dumont and Rykard blood."
"A child?" Max asked.
"Your ancestor," Henri said, looking from Max to Rory. "Which means you two are distant cousins."
The truth hung in the air for one frozen moment. Then everything burst in white light.
When the light faded, Rory found herself alone with the baby in an endless white space. No observatory. No family. Nothing but nothingness stretching forever.
And standing before her was a perfect copy of herself, holding an identical baby.
"Hello, Rory," her double said with Valentin's voice. "Welcome to the void between worlds."
The baby in her arms began to cry.
