The Void Expands
Max pulled Rory through the rubble, holding her hand tight as dust filled the air. The baby's blue field kept them safe, pushing away fallen rocks like they were made of paper. When they finally reached a clear spot, Rory gasped for breath.
"Where are the others?" she asked, looking around desperately.
Max shook his head. "I don't know. We got separated in the collapse."
The ground suddenly shook again, harder this time. But this wasn't just another blast. The whole world seemed to shake.
"What's happening now?" Rory clutched her baby closer.
Max pulled out his phone. The screen flickered with emergency messages and news broadcasts. His face went pale.
"Max? What is it?"
He turned the phone so she could see. On the screen was a live video of Paris—but something was badly wrong. The famous Eiffel Tower was stretching upward like melting taffy. Buildings bent and twisted. And the sky above the city had split open, showing a swirling black filled with strange lights.
"Paris is being pulled into the void," Max whispered.
The baby's field pulsed. NOT GONE. BETWEEN.
"Between what?" Rory asked her child.
Before the baby could answer, more alerts popped up on Max's phone. Tokyo. London. New York. All showing the same strange twisting, the same dark sky opening up.
"It's happening everywhere," Max said. "The void is expanding."
They made their way through what was left of the chapel, looking for an exit. The baby's field suddenly brightened, pointing them toward a tight passage.
THIS WAY. OTHERS WAITING.
Following the baby's direction, they squeezed through the passage and found themselves in a small underground chamber. Sofia, Elara, and Camille were there, crowded around Sofia's tracking device.
"You're alive!" Camille rushed to hug her daughter. "We thought you were trapped."
"The baby helped us," Rory revealed. "But something terrible is happening. Paris—"
"We know," Sofia cut in. "It's not just Paris. Cities all over the world are being affected. But they're not being destroyed."
"What do you mean?" Max asked.
Sofia adjusted her device, showing a 3D model of the Earth with swirling vortexes appearing over major towns. "They're being pulled into what I call the 'probability void'—the space between different possible realities."
The baby squirmed in Rory's arms, his field spreading to fill the entire chamber. Suddenly, everyone heard a voice—not with their ears, but inside their heads. It wasn't the baby's normal simple thoughts. This was something else. Something older.
WE HAVE WATCHED. WE HAVE WAITED. NOW WE MUST SPEAK.
Everyone froze. The voice was deep and strange, like many people speaking together.
"Who... who is that?" Elara whispered.
WE ARE THE WATCHERS BETWEEN PROBABILITIES. THE GUARDIANS OF WHAT MIGHT BE.
The baby's eyes danced with colors no one had seen before. His small body seemed to hold something much bigger, much older.
"Are you... using my baby to speak?" Rory asked, fear making her voice shake.
THE FIRST ONE BRIDGES WORLDS. HE ALLOWS US TO COMMUNICATE DIRECTLY.
Max stepped forward protectively. "What do you want?"
TO PREVENT COLLAPSE. YOUR WORLD SPLITS INTO TOO MANY POSSIBILITIES. FRACTURES GROW. REALITY CANNOT HOLD.
Sofia's eyes widened. "The quantum fractures—they're happening because reality is branching too much?"
YES. HUMANS HAVE REACHED A CRITICAL POINT. TOO MANY PATHS. TOO MANY CHOICES. THE FABRIC TEARS.
"What about the cities?" Camille asked. "What's happening to them?"
NOT DESTROYED. PRESERVED. BETWEEN POSSIBILITIES. UNTIL CHOICE IS MADE.
The baby's field showed them images of Paris, Tokyo, and the other places. They weren't gone—they were suspended in beautiful bubbles of light, floating in the void between worlds.
"So they're safe?" Rory asked hopefully.
FOR NOW. BUT NOT FOREVER.
"What do we need to do?" Max asked. "How do we fix this?"
The voice was quiet for a moment. Then:
PATHS MUST CONVERGE. THE MANY MUST BECOME ONE.
"I don't understand," Rory said. "What paths?"
HUMAN EVOLUTION. THREE PATHS EXIST NOW: NATURAL, DIGITAL, QUANTUM. ALL INCOMPLETE ALONE. MUST JOIN.
Sofia gasped. "The three factions! Natural Path, Digital Ascendance, and Quantum Evolution. They represent the three possible futures for humanity."
"And we need to... combine them somehow?" Max asked.
YES. BUT ONE STANDS IN THE WAY. THE BETWEEN-MAN. NOT FULLY HUMAN. NOT FULLY VOID.
"Valentin," Rory whispered. "He's trying to force evolution his way."
HE SEEKS CONTROL OF ALL PATHS. WOULD BREAK REALITY TO RULE IT.
The chamber shook strongly. Dust and small rocks fell from the roof.
"Los Angeles is starting to fracture too," Sofia warned, checking her device. "We don't have much time."
The baby suddenly reached out his tiny hand, touching Max's cheek. Max's eyes went wide as an image filled his mind—a hidden memory.
"I... I remember now," he whispered. "When I was a child, I saw them—beings made of light, watching from between the walls of my bedroom. My father said I was dreaming, but..."
NOT DREAMS. GLIMPSES. YOU WERE CHOSEN LONG AGO.
"Chosen for what?" Max asked.
Before the voice could answer, the baby's field flickered and faded. The presence seemed to withdraw, leaving just the baby again.
TIRED NOW. BIG VOICES HARD.
"It's okay," Rory soothed her child. "You rest."
"We need to find the others," Sofia said quickly. "If what the... Watchers... said is true, we need representatives from all three factions to have any chance of fixing this."
"But what about Valentin?" Camille asked. "If he's controlling Zanna and Digital Ascendance..."
"Not all of Digital Ascendance," came a new voice from the dark.
Everyone turned. A young woman with blue-tinted skin stepped into the light. She looked like Zanna, but younger.
"My name is Iris," she said. "I'm Zanna's daughter—her real daughter, not just a digital copy. Valentin has taken control of our main systems, but some of us have broken free."
"Can we trust you?" Max asked suspiciously.
Iris held out her hand. In her hand was a small crystal that glowed with the same light as the baby's field.
"I've been protecting this for years," she said. "It's a quantum crystal from the original Ascended One—the grandmother of grandmothers, as your baby called her."
The baby's field glowed with recognition. TRUTH. FRIEND.
"Valentin doesn't just want to control evolution," Iris continued. "He wants to become something new—the void made flesh. And he's nearly succeeded."
"How do we stop him?" Rory asked.
"First, we need to find the artificial quantum entities and neutralize them," Iris stated. "Then we need representatives from all three paths to perform a convergence ritual at the exact center of the fractures."
"A ritual?" Max looked suspicious. "This sounds like Natural Path mysticism."
"Science and mysticism are two sides of the same coin," Iris responded. "The ritual is just focused quantum entanglement—creating a bridge between the three evolutionary paths."
Before anyone could answer, the ground shook so hard that everyone fell to their knees. A massive crack split the chamber wall, showing not rock or dirt, but a swirling void filled with impossible colors.
Through the crack, they could see something moving. Many somethings. Shapes that hurt the eyes and confused the mind.
"They're coming through," Sofia warned. "The void entities."
But Iris was looking at the crack with different eyes—not fear, but wonder.
"Look closer," she whispered. "Those aren't void entities."
As they all looked again, the shapes became clearer. They were people—or what had once been people. And at the front was a familiar face.
"Dad?" Max whispered in shock.
Walking through the void toward them was Alexander Rykard—Max's father—who had died ten years ago.
"The dead aren't dead," Iris said quietly. "They're just... between."
