Chapter 18
Roman’s POV
It’s been five weeks since Skylar and I were kicked from the Silver moon. We’re both living on human land, it’s fun to visit this place but when it came down to actually living here it was difficult. You couldn’t let your wolf out at all, not without risking your life as well as your fellow werewolves who the humans don’t know about at all.
It’s a good thing Skylar’s a spoiled child, we both managed to gather enough money for an apartment. For now, it was a one-month lease with one extra month for free, which gave us some time to figure out what to do. We both had degrees from business school, we both applied for a job, but I was the only one who got accepted. Luckily Skylar managed to find a job at a bakery but neither of us was really happy with this. Maybe it was the city or maybe we both just missed being part of a pack. I tried calling a few packs, so far no luck. There was one pack, the Lycan blood pack. They were as ruthless as they came. The even worse part was that everything they did was by the old laws. Not a single ally yet they’ve never lost a battle. The problem with the Lycan blood pack was that they were only willing to accept soldiers, Skylar wasn’t exactly that. She was just a pregnant wolf with zero fighting skills so of course, I couldn’t choose them.
I opened the door to the apartment and kicked it shut as I walked in. I took off my shoes and rested the laptop bag on the floor. I took a deep breath, releasing the knot of the blue tie around my neck. I heard sounds coming from the kitchen and walked over to see it was Skylar.
“How was work, Romie?” Skylar asked, a loving smile on her lips.
“Normal… Boring, how was it at the bakery?” I sighed and asked the same question. I was surprised how good she was doing at the bakery given she had mentioned lying about her baking skills.
“Very busy, there’s this wedding we’ll be baking for,” Skylar sighed and shook her head.
“I see. That’s good for business then,” I mumbled, walking to the fridge and getting myself some water.
“Mm-hmm, I picked up Freddie’s on the way,” She said, revealing the two platters of food. Freddie had the best burgers in town. It was safe to say it was my comfort food.
“Oh delicious,” I smiled, excitedly. I walked past her and put the glass in the sink. Skylar wrapped her arms around me from behind. I froze in my tracks, unsure what to do now. After a moment I removed her hands from my body and turned around to face her.
“Roman,” She whined, looking up at me and came closer to me.
“Skylar?” I mumbled, watching as she rested her hands on my shoulders. She pulled me down and I just cleared my throat.
“Okay, what do you think you’re doing?” I pushed her away gently and walked away from her space.
“Kissing you?” Skylar replied, annoyed with me.
“No, thanks,” I chuckled.
“We can now be together Roman, I love you,” She took my hand in hers. She had been trying to make a move for so long already. Doesn’t she get it?
“Damnit Skylar, can’t you see I kept avoiding this the whole week, can’t you take a hint?” I asked harshly, yanking my hand from hers.
“Why are you being like this?” She shouted and stomped after me.
“You are not my mate, Skylar. Don’t let this fool you, I’m just here for my child and to take care of you till you're on your own feet,” I reminded her, glaring at her.
“Are you fucking kidding me?!” She yelled, pushing me around.
“I went through all this effort, and you still can’t see how much I love you and want you,” The words left her lips, and a shocked look came across her face like she wasn’t meant to say that.
“What effort, Skylar?” I asked. She tried to walk away but I grabbed her wrist and turned her around.
“Nothing,” Skylar muttered, looking down at her feet.
“What effort, Skylar?” I demanded to know.
“I-I,” she stuttered, unable to answer me.
“Am I the father of your child, Skylar? And don’t you dare fucking lie to me,” I asked, sitting her down on the couch and crossed my arms as I looked down at her.
“There is no child…” The words leaving her lips made my heart sink, I was dumb for a moment, unable to say anything.
“I’m confused,” I frowned.
“At the party, I slipped you a pill, it was supposed to make you lustful, but no matter how hard I tried hitting on you, you were fixed on that bitch. You got hot and took off your clothes to go to bed, and I followed you to bed… I removed my clothes and scattered them around—” Skylar began to explain, and I laughed, shaking my head.
“Skylar, do you know what you did?!” I yelled at her.
“I did this for us, babe,” She took my hand again, but I shoved her away roughly, “Your dumb act cost me everything! I lost my mate, my status, my whole fucking future just because you’re some delusional bitch!”
I walked to the bedroom and began packing some stuff.
“Roman, where are you going?” She asked, tears running down her tears.
“The fuck away from you,” I snarled at her, closing the zipper so roughly it broke off. “You know you’re lucky I’m not taking you to were-court,” I glared at her. Taking her to court would cost her her life, death sentences were still a thing in the werewolf kingdom.
“Please don’t do this to me, we can still build a future together,” She pleaded as I walked away, and stood by the door.
“No, you ruined that already. Now move,” I chuckled then shoved her to the side and walked right past her. I knew it wouldn’t be wise to spend another second with her, I’d be charged with first-degree murder if I stuck around.
I was right all along, by now too long had passed by. The only people who checked in on me were Tessa, Grandpa Nick, and Graham. They were the only ones who stood behind me and out of the three only one believed me, Tessa. I considered going back to the Silver Moon, I was wrongfully kicked out of the pack but as of right now I felt betrayed. Betrayed by my own parents who took some other wolf words over mine. I pleaded for a place to stay, a chance to prove it was bizarre, but they cared more about what their image would be as Alpha and Luna of Silver moon, ally to the king and queen.
Tallulah… I thought she’d call me up at least once, but she never did. I tried texting her myself and calling like a maniac, but she never picked up or responded. Maybe her rejecting me was for the best regardless of what the goddess wanted. If we were meant for love Tali should’ve trusted me. Love requires trust, she didn’t trust me, and I fought my best to stand up for myself but alas choices were made. Choices that hurt me, choices not only they’d have to live with but I too.
I knew where I had to go, the Lycan blood pack. Sure there would be non-stop training, but at this point, it didn’t matter to me. I wanted to be part of a strong pack and they were the only ones willing to accept me.
Four years later…
…
Since Roman had separated from Skylar the contact with his little sister and grandfathers became less and soon non-existent. Roman’s choice. He had no idea what happened with Skylar, and he couldn’t care less. Alpha Vesper of Lycan blood, the ruthless leader, was surprised by Roman’s dedication and hard work. Lycan blood had never trained such a strong soldier before. Roman was so strong and intelligent he became the pack’s beta after the older one stepped down. He got handpicked by the Alpha and Beta. Roman was a rejected wolf without a family to care for, He had nothing to lose. He became a cold-hearted man. The years and training did him well not to mention his charms, he used to get his way. Roman became many single women's favorites even some men's favorites.
“Beta Sterling,” Roman’s assistant called as she knocked on the wooden door.
“Miss Baker? Come on in,” Roman frowned, checking his schedule, she wasn’t supposed to be here. He watched as the raven-haired woman walked over to him and sat down across him, an awkward look on her face.
“That look on your face ain’t kind, what’s wrong?” Roman sighed and put down his pen to focus on the lady.
“Uh it’s the Silver moon,” She said, pressing her lips together. Her green eyes focused on him to read his emotion, but she failed most of the time.
“Pass,” He swung his hand and picked up the pen again and wrote something down on the paper.
“Luna Natalia seems to be sick,” Baker didn’t give up just yet, she wanted to make sure to deliver the full news before he’d make his choice.
“Oh, should we send over some chicken soup?” Roman said sarcastically, luckily Baker knew how to handle his rudeness.
“No sir. I just thought you’d want to know your mother is dying,” She replied, calmly but her toes were curled in her heels.
“Sick or dying?” Roman raised a brow at her.
“Sick with a cureless disease,” Baker informed him, frowning. She didn’t understand why he just continued to write the report. Why wasn’t he invested in this more?
“Cancer?” He asked, flipping to the next page.
“No, something weird sir. Almost like the one case with Bettany,” Baker replied, frowning. The case was bothering her.
“I see, thank you, Baker,” Roman sighed and looked up at her.
“Of course. You also have a session with the younger ones, self-defense classes are it?” She asked, getting up and sliding the chair back into its place.
“Yes, Baker. You can go now,” Roman waved at her.
“Yes, Beta Sterling,” She nodded and closed the door behind her on her way out.
Roman clenched his jaw, was it finally time to return to the Silver moon? Natalia was dying and he didn’t want to let her go off without first proving to her what an awful mother she was to him…
