Chapter 54 Anything For The Harvest
Chapter 54 Anything For The Harvest
Seraphine/Isadora POV
The explosion slammed into my spine like a war hammer.
Even pinned against the roof tiles by Rayne’s shadow-bind, the shockwave tore through the stone beneath me, vibrating violently into my bones. Tiles cracked and shattered. Dust and debris billowed upward into the heavy rain, mixing with the downpour.
“Look at them come,” Isadora hissed with dark satisfaction inside our shared mind. “The mighty Nikolai Legion has answered the call. How convenient.”
Seraphine’s soul surged with desperate strength. “They’re here! My brothers and sisters in arms… they’ll defend the Palace! Release me! Let me warn them before it’s too late!”
Isadora’s laughter echoed coldly. “Warn them? Oh, sweet naive Guardian. They are not coming to save anything. They are coming to become my weapons.”
Seraphine fought viciously against the thick Soul-Static that choked her will. “Move my hand! Just one signal three short pulses! They’ll understand it means danger from within! Please!”
“You will stay silent,” Isadora snapped, tightening her control. “After everything I’ve endured, you think I’ll let you ruin this moment? Stay in your cage.”
Our right hand twitched violently on the wet roof tiles. Seraphine poured every drop of her remaining honor and loyalty into the movement.
“Just… move! They’re descending fast. I can still stop this! This is all your doing!”
Isadora crushed the attempt, flooding our nerves with her control.
Isadora voice cracked with raw pain and fury. “Pathetic? I gave three hundred years of my life protecting this bloodline! I stood beside Rayne through every battle, every crisis. You are nothing but a parasite feeding on my body and my power!”
“Oh, but I am so much more than that now,” Isadora replied smoothly, her tone laced with ancient arrogance. “Soon I will have the Anchor. Soon I will have everything. Your precious Prince and his little human whore will both fall.”
The lead scouts of the Legion descended rapidly through the storm. Black armor gleamed with rain, eyes glowing faint silver as they cut through the night on Shadow-Gliders and Step-Magic.
Seraphine screamed internally. “They’re landing! Isadora, don’t do this! Let me speak to them I beg you! They are my family!”
“Begging already?” Isadora mocked. “How the mighty Guardian has fallen. But no. Watch closely. This is how a true player wins the game.”
Seraphine’s vision sharpened inside the mind-palace as she saw the scouts approaching. “If they find me still pinned here by Rayne’s magic, the Queen’s Inquisitors will tear my mind apart looking for answers. You cannot risk that exposure!”
“Exactly why I’m ending this now,” Isadora said coldly. “Time to burn.”
She triggered the Soul-Burn. Seraphine cried out in pure agony. “No! Stop this! It burns...you’re ripping me apart from the inside!”
“Stop resisting and the pain will lessen,” Isadora replied without mercy. “Your loyal blue Star Energy is such exquisite fuel. So pure. So easy to twist and consume.”
Our borrowed body convulsed violently. Black veins rose beneath pale skin as Seraphine’s clean blue flame twisted and darkened into a sickly necrotic purple.
“You’re killing me…” Seraphine gasped, her voice growing weaker. “My power… it’s fading so fast. I can barely hold on…”
“Good,” Isadora whispered. “The weaker you become, the more perfectly I can wear your skin.”
The shadow-bind holding us to the roof shuddered violently, then exploded outward in a violent burst of ash and fading darkness. Our body crumpled forward, finally free, but smoking heavily, energy nearly depleted.
The first Nikolai scouts landed with predatory grace. Boots cracked against the wet tiles. Weapons were already drawn and ready.
“Seraphine!” the lead scout shouted, rushing forward. “What in the void happened here? Report immediately! Are you injured?”
Isadora quickly took full control and made our voice tremble with perfect vulnerability. “Rayne… he’s turned.”
The scouts froze in stunned silence.
“Turned?” the lead scout barked, eyes widening. “What do you mean he’s turned? Speak clearly, Guardian!”
Isadora let our body collapse dramatically into the nearest scout’s arms, breath coming in shallow, pained gasps. Rain plastered our hair to our face as our eyes widened with manufactured terror.
“He detonated charges in the East Wing himself. I saw it. He’s escaping with the human rebel Brea. The one from the square.. He has betrayed us all!”
Murmurs and shocked curses erupted across the roof as more Legion soldiers landed, forming a tightening ring around us.
Another scout stepped closer, voice sharp with disbelief. “Prince Rayne would never betray the Bloodline. Are you absolutely certain of what you saw?”
“I saw it with my own eyes,” Isadora continued weakly, her voice cracking at the perfect moment. “He set off the explosions to cover his escape. He’s heading toward the Enclave facility right now. He’s protecting that human girl. She has corrupted him completely.”
A third scout growled angrily. “He would choose a filthy human over his own people? Over his own family?”
“Yes,” Isadora whispered brokenly, letting tears mix with the rain on our face. “She has him wrapped around her finger. The Prince is lost. He threatened me when I tried to stop him.”
Seraphine screamed inside our mind with fading strength. “Stop lying! Tell them the truth right now! Rayne is innocent.. this is all your doing, you monstrous witch! You’re framing him!”
“Be quiet,” Isadora hissed back viciously. “Or I’ll burn what little remains of your pathetic soul right here.”
One of the scouts activated his comms, voice hard and urgent. “All units, priority alert! Prince Rayne Nikolai has been declared a traitor to the Bloodline. The human known as Brea is to be terminated on sight. The Prince has turned. I repeat..
the Prince has turned!”
Isadora felt a cold wave of triumph flood through her. “Listen to that beautiful sound. They’re already shifting. From loyal defenders to hungry hunters.”
The lead scout lifted our limp body carefully into his arms. “We’re taking you to the High Court immediately. The Queen must hear this directly from your own mouth. Can you stand?”
Isadora let our head fall weakly against his armored shoulder. “Thank you… I’m so tired. I tried to stop him… I really did. But he was too strong. He threatened to kill me if I interfered.”
As they carried us toward the waiting Shadow-Glider, Seraphine’s voice grew fainter but burned with final rage. “You evil, heartless bitch… they’ll slaughter Rayne because of your lies. They’ll hunt Brea down like an animal. How can you live with so much betrayal?”
“Live with it?” Isadora replied with a silent, deeply satisfied smile. “I’m going to thrive on it, my dear. This is only the beginning.”
Behind us, the Palace was rapidly being surrounded by a massive ring. Orders barked through comms. The hunt for Rayne and the girl he protected had officially begun in earnest.
Isadora closed our eyes, perfectly hiding the small, triumphant smile that curved our lips.
“The First Harvest,” she whispered softly to herself, savoring every word, “is accelerating beautifully.”
