Chapter 78 Vision of the Future

Chapter 78 Vision of the Future
Thessaly fell asleep thinking about the ceremony.

The dream hit different from the start.

Sharper. More real. Like she was standing in a future that already existed somewhere.

The palace was burning.

Flames climbed the walls, consumed the gardens, turned the sky red. Thessaly stood in the courtyard watching, unable to move. Could only witness.

And in the center of the destruction stood Davorin.

Except his eyes were pure black. No whites. No irises. Just darkness. Shadows bled from his skin like oil, and when he moved, reality bent.

The Void had won.

"You failed," the Void said with Davorin's mouth. "When it mattered most, you chose fear over courage. Chose safety over sacrifice."

The palace collapsed. Thessaly watched people die under falling stone. Watched Varian try to rally soldiers who were already lost. Watched Ondine burn trying to shield someone.

"This is what happens when you choose wrong."

The scene shifted.

Thessaly stood in darkness now. Emptiness stretching forever.

She was alone.

No Davorin. No bond. No connection to anything except the void pressing in from all sides.

"This is the other path," a voice echoed. Ancient. Sad. "The one where you survive but lose everything that makes survival worth it."

The darkness showed her.

She was older. Thirty, maybe. Standing on a cliff overlooking a world gone gray. The Void had consumed it all.

And Thessaly was still fighting. Still trying to push back against something that couldn't be stopped. Her hands bled from clawing at darkness. Her throat raw from screaming challenges nobody answered.

She'd survived the ceremony. Had refused to complete the bond because she was afraid.

So Davorin had died. The Void had taken him. And Thessaly had lived to watch the world end piece by piece.

"Is this what I become?" she whispered.

"If you choose fear," the voice confirmed. "If you hold back when the moment demands everything."

The scene shifted again.

Same courtyard. Same burning palace.

But she wasn't alone.

Davorin stood beside her. Not possessed. Not lost. His eyes were his own, and the bond sang between them. Stronger than ever. Complete.

"Together," Davorin said.

They turned to face the Void.

Their magic merged. Shadow and dream twisting together until they were one force instead of two. Thessaly felt his power flowing through her, felt her consciousness blending with his until she couldn't tell where she ended and he began.

They stepped into the Dream Realm as one being. Two minds in perfect synchronization.

They reached for the Void. Not to fight it. To understand it. To see what it had been before corruption.

And they found the crack. The weakness.

The place where the Void could be sealed again. Contained. Locked away in the space between consciousness where it couldn't reach the physical world.

It would take everything. The kind of sacrifice that left nothing behind.

Thessaly saw herself and Davorin at the edge of that containment. Saw them choosing to step through together. To become the seal that kept the Void locked away forever.

"This is the cost," the ancient voice said. "Complete the bond. Merge fully. And give everything to stop what's coming."

"We die," Thessaly said.

"You transform. Become something else. Something that exists between worlds to keep the darkness out." The voice was gentle. "Not death. Not life. But purpose eternal."

The vision showed her that existence. Neither alive nor dead. Consciousness merged so completely they were one being spread across the barrier between realms. Holding back the Void for eternity.

Together. Always together. Never alone.

"Is this the only way?"

"This is the one where everyone else survives. Where the world continues. Where your sacrifice means something."

The darkness began to fade.

"Choose," the voice whispered. "Tomorrow you complete the bond or refuse it. There are no second chances."

Thessaly woke gasping.

Davorin's chambers. Pre-dawn light filtering through windows. Her heart slamming against her ribs.

The dream clung to her like smoke. She could still feel the emptiness of standing alone. Could still feel the completeness of being bonded with Davorin so deeply they were one being.

Both futures felt real. Both felt inevitable.

"Thess?" Davorin was awake beside her. "What's wrong?"

"I saw it." Her voice shook. "The future. Both versions. What happens if we complete the bond and what happens if we don't."

His expression went carefully neutral. "And?"

"The bond doesn't just connect us. It merges us. Until there's no separation. Just one being made of both of us." Thessaly looked at him. "And when we face the Void, we'll have to sacrifice that merged consciousness to seal it away. Become the barrier that keeps it contained forever."

"I know."

"We won't die exactly. But we won't be alive either. We'll just exist between worlds for eternity." Her hands shook. "That's one path."

"And the other?"

"You die. The Void takes you. I survive but everyone else dies eventually. And I spend the rest of existence fighting alone against something I can't beat."

Davorin was quiet. "Then we choose the sacrifice that saves everyone else."

"You say that like it's easy."

"It's necessary." He took her hands. "I've been fighting the Void alone for years. Barely holding on. And it's been exhausting and lonely and I've wanted to give up more times than I can count."

"This isn't making me feel better."

"Being alone against that darkness nearly destroyed me. But facing it together? Merged so completely we're one being? That doesn't sound like sacrifice to me. That sounds like the opposite of loneliness."

Thessaly stared at him. "You're saying eternal imprisonment between worlds is romantic?"

"I'm saying eternity with you sounds better than one more day fighting alone."

The dream was still fresh. Both versions. Standing alone forever. Standing together.

"The ceremony is in a few hours," she whispered.

"I know."

"Last chance to change our minds."

"I'm not changing mine." Davorin's voice was steady. "The question is whether you're brave enough to choose the path that scares you most."

Both futures terrified her.

But one ended with her alone. The other ended with them together.

"I hate prophecies," she said.

"Same."

"And I hate that the only way to save everyone is to sacrifice everything."

"Also same."

"But I'm choosing you anyway." Thessaly met his eyes. "Even knowing what it costs. Even knowing we'll spend eternity merged into one being holding back the darkness. I'm choosing you."

Something in Davorin's expression broke open. "You're sure?"

"No. I'm terrified. But I'm doing it anyway."

He pulled her close. They sat there in the pre-dawn quiet, both knowing what today would bring.

The Unity Ceremony. Complete bonding. Consciousness merging until they were one entity.

And eventually, when the Void came, they'd step into that space between worlds together.

The question had never been whether Thessaly was brave enough to face the darkness.

It was whether she was brave enough to not face it alone.

She'd seen her fate. Both versions.

And she'd chosen.

Now she just had to survive long enough to see it through.
