Chapter 52 Plans and Promises

Chapter 52 Plans and Promises
Tuesday morning arrived too fast.

Elena woke early, already hearing voices downstairs. Pierce had been up for hours, planning with Marcus and Derek.

She got dressed and headed down to find the bunker's living room transformed into a tactical operations center. Maps spread across the table, laptop screens showing building schematics, phones buzzing constantly.

Pierce stood at the center of it all, eyes sharp, voice controlled as he pointed to different positions on the map.

"Marcus, you're here. You'll be stationed at the north entrance, while derek takes the parking garage." He looked up when Elena entered, his expression shifting slightly. "Leo covers the lobby. I stay with her the entire time."

Marcus nodded. "What about escape routes?"

"There are three primary, two backup." Pierce marked them on the map. "If anything goes wrong, we move immediately. No hesitation."

Elena moved closer, looking at the detailed plans they'd created overnight. Every entrance, every exit, every possible point of attack marked and accounted for.

"This is for tomorrow?" she asked quietly.

"Yes." Pierce didn't look at her. "We leave at seven. Drive takes forty-five minutes. You'll be in the building by eight-thirty, giving you time before the meeting starts."

"How long will I be inside?"

"As short as possible." He said, still not looking at her. "You make your appearance, assert control, get out."

Elena studied the maps, seeing the level of preparation, the sheer amount of resources being mobilized just to get her safely to one meeting.

"This is a lot," she said.

"It's necessary." Pierce's voice was flat. "Xander will be watching. Rodrigo's people will be watching. The second you surface, they'll know."

"Do you think they'll move on me tomorrow?"

Pierce finally looked at her. "Yes."

The single word hung in the air, heavy with certainty.

Marcus cleared his throat. "I'll brief Leo and get the vehicles ready."

He and Derek left, giving them privacy.

Pierce turned back to the maps, his shoulders tense. "After the meeting, we're not coming back here. This location is compromised once you surface."

"Where will we go?"

"I have another place. It's more remote." He rolled up one of the maps. "We'll move there tomorrow night."

Elena nodded slowly. "Okay."

"I need you to try on the vest," Pierce said, not looking at her. "Make sure it fits properly under your clothes."

He pulled a bulletproof vest from a bag on the floor, sleek, black, significantly lighter than Elena had expected.

"Put this on over your shirt," Pierce said.

Elena pulled off her sweater, standing in just her tank top. Pierce's eyes flicked to her briefly before he focused intently on the vest, helping her slip her arms through.

His hands moved to the velcro straps on the sides, adjusting them. "It needs to be snug. Not tight enough to restrict breathing but tight enough that it won't shift."

His fingers brushed her ribs as he tightened the left side. Elena held her breath, hyperaware of him being this close, his hands on her body, the focused intensity in his expression.

"Too tight?" Pierce asked, his voice rougher than before.

"No." Her voice came out cracked. "It's fine."

He moved to the right side, his hand sliding along her waist to reach the straps. Elena's skin burned everywhere he touched, even through the tank top.

Pierce stepped in front of her, checking the front plates, his face inches from hers. "The vest covers your vital organs. Heart, lungs, major arteries." His hand pressed flat against her chest. "But it won't stop everything. Headshot, neck, limbs, you're still vulnerable."

"I understand."

"If someone shoots at you, you get down immediately." His hand stayed on her chest, right over her heart. "You hear gunfire, you drop. You let me cover you."

Elena nodded, unable to speak with him this close, his hand on her, his eyes burning into hers.

Pierce's thumb moved slightly, before he seemed to realize what he was doing and pulled back.

"Take it off," he said, his voice tight. "Make sure you can get it on quickly tomorrow morning."

Elena removed the vest, her hands shaking slightly. Pierce took it from her, not meeting her eyes, and set it aside.

The moment broke. Elena grabbed her sweater and pulled it back on.

"We should go over your presentation," Pierce said, already moving to the laptop.

They spent the next two hours reviewing board materials. Elena walked Pierce through the company structure, explained the key executives, outlined her strategy for asserting control.

He listened intently, asking questions, pointing out potential challenges.

"They'll try to intimidate you," Pierce said. "Make you feel like you're not qualified."

"I'm not qualified." She said quietly. "I'm a doctor, not a CEO."

"You're the owner. That's all the qualification you need." His eyes met hers. "You walk in there like you belong. Like there's no question about your authority."

"And if they push back?"

"Then you push harder." Pierce leaned back. "You're your father's daughter. You have every right to that company. Make them see it."

Elena nodded, feeling something shift in her chest at his confidence in her.

They worked until afternoon, until Elena's head was spinning with financial projections and strategic initiatives and executive bios.

Finally, Pierce closed the laptop. "That's enough. You need rest."

"I'm fine."

"Elena, you're exhausted." He said gently. "Go upstairs. Try to sleep."

She wanted to argue but knew he was right. "What about you?"

"I'll keep working."

Elena headed upstairs, but sleep didn't come. She lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, her mind racing through tomorrow's possibilities.

What if something went wrong? What if Rodrigo's men attacked? What if Pierce got hurt protecting her?

What if she never made it out of that building alive?

Evening arrived and Elena forced herself to eat dinner, sitting across from Pierce at the small table. Neither of them spoke much. The weight of tomorrow pressed down on both of them.

After dinner, Pierce returned to his planning. Elena tried to read, failed, and ended up pacing her room.

Around midnight, she gave up and headed downstairs for water.

Pierce was still in the office, hunched over his laptop, his face illuminated by the screen.

Elena watched him from the doorway. He looked exhausted. Carrying the weight of keeping her alive tomorrow.

She moved to the kitchen, filled a glass with water, and stood at the sink drinking it slowly.

Behind her, she heard Pierce's chair creak. Footsteps approached.

"Can't sleep?" His voice came from the doorway.

"No." Elena turned to face him. "You?"

"No point in trying." He said.

They looked at each other across the kitchen, both thinking about tomorrow, both terrified in different ways.

"Pierce," Elena said quietly. "What if..."

"We're not doing this." His voice was firm.

"Doing what?"

"Talking about what-ifs. About what could go wrong." Pierce moved closer. "We've planned for every possibility. I'll have eyes on every entrance. The best people I have watching your back."

"But if something happens..."

"It won't."

"You can't know that."

"I can." Pierce's eyes locked on hers. "Because I won't let it. I'll die before I let anyone hurt you tomorrow."

Elena set down her glass. "Thank you. For doing this. For protecting me even though..." She stopped.

"Even though what?"

"Even though I can't give you what you want."

Pierce's jaw tightened. "That's not why I'm doing this."

"Then why?"

"Because I love you." The words came out rough. "And that's not going to change just because you can't love me back the way I need you to."

"I do love you..."

"I know." Pierce's voice was quiet. "But it's not enough and that's okay. I've made peace with it."

Elena's eyes burned with tears. "I'm sorry."

"So am I." He stepped back. "Get some sleep. Tomorrow's going to be a long day."

He left before she could respond, returning to the office, closing the door gently behind him.

Elena stood alone in the kitchen, tears streaming down her face, her heart breaking all over again.

Tomorrow she might die and the man who would give his life to prevent it was someone she loved but couldn't be with.

She finally went upstairs, climbed into bed, and lay there listening to Pierce move around below.

Neither of them slept.

Both of them waited for dawn and when it came, everything would change.
