When The Truth Burns

When The Truth Burns
Ashton’s POV

The trial for my father’s and brother’s deaths finally resumed after Peter Hamilton, my father’s mechanic who had been missing since the accident, was found. He had fled to Paris. Ever since the police put his name on the wanted list, someone had come forward claiming to have seen him there.

Lily and I felt a wave of relief. We couldn’t wait to hear what Peter had to say in court.

That afternoon, the air felt heavier, charged with tension. The moment Peter Hamilton stepped inside the courtroom, every gaze locked on him, each carrying the same hope that his testimony would unmask the true culprit.

“Peter Hamilton, you are here to testify about the sum you received from Charles Rutherford. Is that correct? And what exactly did they ask you to do?” Judge Brandon’s voice cut through the silence, firm and commanding.

Peter’s face was pale, yet there was a steadiness to him, as if he had braced himself for this moment.

“Yes, Your Honor. I received a large transfer from Charles Rutherford and Vanessa Williams. They asked me to tamper with the car’s brake system so it wouldn’t work.”

Gasps rippled through the room. Lily and I exchanged a stunned glance. I turned toward my mother, her expression was tight, shadowed with fear. Was she involved directly?

“Your Honor… I had no personal motive. I did it under their orders. They promised me a large sum, but… I regret it,” Peter said, his head bowed, his voice weighed down with remorse.

“Charles Rutherford and Vanessa Williams, is it true you transferred fifty thousand dollars to Peter Hamilton and instructed him to sabotage the brakes?” Prosecutor Harper’s voice was even sharper as he turned to face Charles and my mother.

“Yes, I did,” Charles replied curtly.

He had long been the prime suspect, and now his confession confirmed it. The entire courtroom was caught between shock and relief. All that remained was my mother’s answer, a possibility I dreaded to face.

“Vanessa Williams, did you, alongside Charles Rutherford, instruct Peter Hamilton to commit sabotage?”

Before my mother could speak, Charles interrupted.

“Vanessa had nothing to do with it. I take full responsibility.” His tone was calm, almost protective.

“Your Honor,” Peter cut in, his voice ringing clear and unshaken, “I swear on my life, Vanessa Williams was involved. She came to me herself, asking me to sabotage her husband’s car. She also arranged for me to flee to Paris. I’ve lived with the weight of that guilt ever since. Today I am telling the truth, every last word of it.”

The room seemed to tilt around me. My own mother… the architect of my father’s and brother’s deaths. Why, Mother? Why?

Lily’s hand tightened around mine, grounding me.

I looked at my mother. She kept her head down, her composure beginning to crack.

“Vanessa Williams, please respond to Peter Hamilton’s statement. Were you involved?” Prosecutor Harper’s gaze was piercing.

“Yes, I was.”

The shock that swept through the room was palpable. The judge called for a recess as chaos broke out and my mother collapsed to the floor.

Of everyone in this room, I was the one most shattered. I had spent so long chasing the truth, convinced that our family’s greatest enemy was out there, beyond our bloodline. But the truth was here, sitting beside me all along. My strength drained away. Lily held me, telling me I could get through this, but I didn’t feel strong at all.

Three days later…

The courtroom was packed with people hungry for the verdict. The click of cameras was constant. Judge Brandon sat rigid, his face carved from stone. Before him, Charles and my mother, Vanessa Williams, sat side by side, hands cuffed, but their demeanors could not have been more different. Charles stared at the floor, while my mother looked straight ahead, as though this were another corporate meeting, not the judgment of her life.

“Silence in the court,” the bailiff’s voice thundered, slicing through the chill in the air.

Judge Brandon adjusted his robe, his gaze sweeping the room. “We are here to deliver sentencing in the matter of The State versus Charles Rutherford and Vanessa Williams on the charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.”

Lily’s hand found mine under the table, cold and tight.

“Mr. Charles Rutherford, the court finds you guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. You acted with clear intent, premeditation, and malice aforethought, resulting in the deaths of Raymond Williams and Liam Williams. Your actions showed calculated disregard for human life. For these reasons, it is the judgment of this court that you be sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.”

Sobs broke out behind me. Charles lifted his head briefly, his eyes seeking my mother before dropping again.

The judge turned to her. “Mrs. Vanessa Williams, this court also finds you guilty of conspiracy in the same crime. However, it is acknowledged that you did not directly execute the act, and your counsel has argued for mitigation based on your cooperation and lack of prior criminal history.”

I held my breath. My heart pounded against my ribs hearing her name tied to the word “guilty.”

“Therefore, you are sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after twenty-five years.”

The scratching of pens and furious typing of reporters filled the air.

My mother glanced at me, her eyes vacant, though behind them I thought I saw something, regret, or perhaps anger that her secret had been dragged into the light. Beside her, Charles lifted his chin slightly, as if to say, I kept my promise to protect you.

The judge’s gavel struck. “Court is adjourned.”

The clink of the handcuffs locking again was deafening. They were led out through the side door. I stayed frozen in place, Lily’s grip the only anchor keeping me from being swept away in the storm inside my head.

Outside, camera flashes exploded, reporters shouting questions that reached me only as distant echoes. I could think of only one thing — how to live with the truth that my mother was a murderer, and how that truth would change me forever.
