Chapter Forty-eight: The First Haze

We arrived home just as the sun sank below the horizon. Time seemed to pass by too quickly while we were at my office. Once inside, I head straight for the kitchen, “We are going to need sustenance to get through the next couple of days of this full moon.”

Vincent says, “Well then let's get to it before we can't.”

“You guys are not getting any,” I let out a sigh, “A girl can dream. Sam you order a door for the office and l'Il start the prep work.”

“So that's what all that was earlier?” Eric asks.

Vincent explains, “Eva got hazed at her office. We locked ourselves in the women's restroom to take care of it. As we were doing so, Sam broke the door down.”

Eric sighs in relief, “Well at least no one saw.”

I tell him, “Rick and Brandon now know, though.”

Eric smiles at me, “Rick was onto it a week ago, he'd have figured it out. He's perceptive like you, Eva.”

“Yeah but he’s human, me well…” I say.

Katie looks around confused, “Door, who did what?”

Vincent and I point to Sam. Sam sighs, “I had no choice, someone locked the door and kept me from my mate.”

“You weren't even at the office when Vincent and I had to rush to the ladies room,” I say as I give Sam a look.

“But he works across town,” Katie adds.

I sigh, “I guess that doesn't matter.”

“Is it like that for all wolves?” Steven asks Sam.

“No, if you do have a connection with your haze partner it does to an extent. If it's your mate you can control it for a while. But if Eva's your mate…..it's indescribable and uncontrollable. At least so far it has been that way. She becomes all you can sense. All you can see. Nothing matters but getting to her,” Sam explains.

“Even miles away?” Katie asks.

He nods, “Yes even up to thousands of miles away.”

“Holy shit! Why?” Katie asks.

Sam shrugs, “Procreation is my only guess.”

Katie turns to me, “Eva, you're not, are you?”

I give her a small smile, “No, IUD still in place. I am still focused on my career first.”

“Just no fucking in the kitchen or living room,” she says.

I laugh, “But kitchen bits can be extremely hot!”

She raises her eyebrow, “Do I even know you?”

I giggle, “I'm still me. I just no longer have to worry about being chastised if I want to do or try something. These guys are open and honest. I trust them.”

“So are we really going to Europe?” she asks.

I nod. “So I am going to meet Dracula?” she inquires.

“Yes,” I tell her, but Vincent interrupts with a resounding no.

I turn to him, “I have a plan.”

He looks into my eyes, “It better be good.”

I say, “I can enchant a piece of her jewelry which can protect her from psychic vampires. His ESP won't work but mine will as I'm not a vampire.”

Eric looks at me appraisingly, “That could work.”

Vincent smirks, “I'll give you credit, Eva. He won't see that coming.”

I grin, “He won't see much of anything coming.”

Sam cocks his head at me, “What are you planning?”

I smile triumphantly, “Well the moment he can see us, he will try to read our minds. I plan on doing a little ditty.”

I think I have caught Vincent’s attention. “Macarena?” he asks.

My grin widens, “Nope, far more torturous.”

He grins, “Good.”

“You really have issues with him, huh?” I ask.

“You know the legends of Dracula. Who do you think fabricated them?” he asks me.

“They're a bit fantastical but aren't all legends?” I respond.

Sam looks at me, “No yours isn't, Eva. If any, yours is underplayed.”

I nod, “I'd rather be underestimated, actually.”

We made a bunch of food that can be reheated or just grabbed and ate. We also put together a decent dinner. It's a weird family but it's working for us so far. I already appreciate their friendships. I accept our differences and I'm in love with them. With each passing day, I'm drawn to them more and more. They don't cage me but instead, allow me to test my own limits. I am finally free, but why did it take three mates to do that?
