Chapter Twenty-Four: Overcoming Obstacles

We finish lunch. Gran does the dishes and makes Kim help. I allow Kim to talk again but I won't

hesitate to silence her. She will learn her place. I just don't have the patience for entitled little bitches like her.

I know she needs tough love because she's been catered to her

whole life. Her twin brother ribs her a bit but not enough. She'd be a poor fit to rule a pack. Her brother Dean has some hope.

I'll chat with Gran later. Because I got a lot from all of them in just the short time that I have been near them. They don't hide their thoughts or pasts as the vampires do.

We approach the course.

“You ready my treasured one?” Sam asks me.

I laugh.

“What?” Sam asks.

“Just sounds funny coming from you,” I say.

“Well you sound funny when you talk about beating a pack of wolves,” he jokes.

“How so?” I ask.

“You're so tiny,” he says smiling.

“I may be tiny but I pack one hell of a punch,” I reply.

He laughs, “Ok Buffy!”

l laugh, “That was a good one actually.0

“Sit with me and watch the ladies race,” he demands.

“Don't mind if I do,” I say.

We watch. He has trouble keeping his hands to himself. This haze thing

is hard to fight. But I'm managing better than him or at least I think so.But I do feel like some horny teenager around him. I wonder if it will always be this way. Of course, Kim wins the race, but not very decisively though. She's not all

that she thinks she is. I was so right about her. I chuckle to myself. Sam just looks at me with a silly grin.

I really hate this mindlink thing. Though it can be very useful, it's just hard knowing that no thoughts are

private unless I use super focus to suppress it. I can hear many of the wolvesthoughts. I need to chat with Samand Gran about that too because when I first got here I could only feel them.

It's now time for the men and me to race

“Best of luck guys, you'll need it,” I say as I smack my ass, “Get used to this view!”

I can sense that I'm getting under their skin. It's exactly what I wanted to do.

I thrive being the protagonist. Plus I do enjoy being a bit evil from time to time. But who doesn't?

It starts. We come to the tire maze.

The goal is to get to the end the fastest. Well.. I get a running start and vault overit, landing squarely on the other side.

Next a moat that you're supposed to wade through. Nope. I run across

it only getting my sneakers wet, so I ditch them. A wall to scale looms in front of me. I can't use my ability to levitate so Iforgo the rope and leap. I grab high up on the rope and climb the rest of the way. Once over I jump down.

Next is a balance beam with pendulums swinging over it. I take a few moments to get the pattern. Then I run. Now it's the homestretch to the podium.I get there and sit by Sam and Gran.

“Drink and food please,” I say.

Sam chuckles, “Here,” as he hands me his bottle of water and a granola bar. I like how he takes care of me without being overbearing.

Sam chuckles, “It's no cake, but hopefully will do.”

“I'll make one later,” I tell him.

“I can make you one dear,” Gran tells me.

“You don't…” I start to say.

“Let me, you'll be busy on your run,” she interjects.

I tell her, “I just ran.”

She laughs, “Different kind my dear.”

Some of the guys finally caught up.

“How can you be that fast?” Simon says panting.

“What are you? You're not human!” Mike yells a bit too loudly.

Gran says, “It's time to show them, Sam.”

He stands and I notice a change in

him. “Alright everyone quiet.

Attention now!” Sam commands.

His playfulness is gone. Hmm…maybe he is more like Vincent then I thought. His entire

demeanor changed even his voice. It's stern, commanding, and echoes into your bones.

“As you know this is the opening event of the haze.

This year things will be different. As you can see we have a guest. Join me, Eva,” he announces. I stand and go beside Sam.

He starts, “This is Eva Sims known by many as Midnight Rose.”

There's some gasps. Kim is staring daggers at me. I hold back a giggle.

He continues, “Besides the blood debt ritual, there will be another tonight.

Brothers and Gran join me, please. Steven and Mike you too! Tonight the Fall pack

welcomes a new member. Our Alpha female, our Luna, our heart, and my mate!”

Kim says, “This is bullshit, she's human!”

Sam kisses me. Damn it's hard keeping it toned down.

I look at Kim as I say, “I wouldn't be so sure of that!”

Sam and I both shift. I turn and shake my tail at Kim. Then turn and

wink. We run into the woods together.

I hear Gran announce, “The white wolf has returned!”

I dart through the trees. It's really liberating. The wind whips through my long soft fur. I'm enjoying it when I'm tackled to the ground. I look at Sam’s Wolf. He's massive but beautiful. The lingering rays of sunlight bounce off of his shiny coat like prisms dancing through water that is illuminated by sunshine. We both decide to talk normally. I am glad that we are alone, because I am pretty sure that the other wolves only use the mindlink to talk with their packs.

Sam and I use our mindlink to talk since we are in wolf form.

“Hey I was enjoying myself!” I exclaim.

He laughs, “So am I.”

“Cocky much,” I tease.

He snorts, “Just wait!”

“You know I can still use my magic,” I threaten.

He says, “Cheater!”

I grin, “I prefer clever.”

He's nearly three times my size, but I'm nimble. We circle each other, taking nips

here and there He says, “You have better control then I thought you would.”

“Surprised?” I ask.

He laughs, “Always.”

“But get ready for one,” he says.

“What?” I ask.

He jumps me and bites the back of my neck.

“Hey!” I yell.

He grins, “Way of the wolf Eva!”

I roll and dislodge him, “What are you doing?”

“Claiming my mate,” he says.

I cock my head, “Why?”

“Tradition. We consummate our union as wolves,” he tells me.

“Won't it be odd? We aren't hazed or anything?” I ask.

He chuckles, “Was it odd earlier?”

“No,” I answer.

“Then nothing changed really,” he says.

I huff, “Fine but I reserve the right to call it off!”

“I swear,” he says.

He comes over and nuzzles me. It does feel good.

We frolic as wolves and consummate our union. We shift

back and start to walk to the house.

“Got a question,” I say.

“Okay,” he says while urging me to continue.

“Why can I hear the others thoughts?” I ask.

“Whose?” he inquires.

“Everyone but Gran. Hers is veiled somehow, but they can't hear mine,” I tell him.

“You're part of the pack Eva. You hear them as I do. We're Alphas. Can you hear Kim's?” he asks.

I respond with a shakily, “Yes. Like I said, everybody but Gran.”

“You are the White Wolf then or linked in some way. Legend said she could hear all wolves and many shifters,” he tells me. But even that doesn't sound right to me.

We get close to the house. I stop, “Victor is here and brought company.”

“I don't sense or smell them yet,” he says.

I tell him, “I do.”

I send a raccoon to spy, “It's him, Veronica, and three goons!”

“Who's Veronica?” Sam asks.

I grin evilly, “A dead bitch!”

“Eva!” Sam warns.

I look him in the eye, “She was warned!”

“When?” he asks.

I say, “When she called me food at Eric's club when Vincent took me. Then she tried to attack me when Vincent wasn't nearby. She thinks he's hers.”

“Well alright then, but don't tell him that I agree with you,” Sam says.

I smile, “I won't. I will link to the guys and let them know to get here now.”

I link up with Eric and Vincent to get them here pronto. I know they'll fly. We walk into the house.

“Well the disappearing, reappearing Alpha finally shows,” Victor taunts.

Victor is tall with dark hair and dark eyes too back that his soul is pitch black.

“And he brought food. Now I can finally drain her!” Veronica says.

“Looks like a certain bitch is dumber then I thought you were. The Prince isn't here to protect you this time. Plus, Idon't answer to him or anyone,” I say.

“You always did have a mouth on you Eva. I thought that I sensed you here, but just figured that I smelled you on one of the fleabags,” Victor coldly says.

“I'm fully aware and I've gotten even better at using it, Veronica,” I say.

“Big talk,” she says.

I laugh, “Nah, you're dead but you are just too stupid to know it.”

“Like you could kill a vampire,” she says.

I say nonchalantly, “Already killed three what's a few more.”

“Who?” Victor asks.

“Vicky Price, who you knew as Vicky Wood and her two bodyguards. I think their names were Leon and Tim,” I say flatly.

His goons yell. I smirk, “Looks like your buddies knew them.”

“Why?” he asks me.

“Unlike you I do what is right? What is just!” I say.

I feel nothing but rage. I know he's a monster and I will show him no mercy! I didn't trust myself before, but I do now. I know what I must do.
