Chapter Twenty-Two: Cat In Pants

Gran tells us, “l'Il try and do some researchbut I can't guarantee anything. Your best bet is make your vampires take you to the Old World.”

“Oh I will. I promised Katie a vacation this year anyway,” I tell her.

“You know they won't let you bring Katie,” Sam says.

“Watch me!” I yell.

This is about me and I won't let them prohibit me from learning what I am.

Sam sighs, “You summoned him. Now he's calling my phone!”

“I left mine in your room,” I tell him.

He huffs, “I'll put it on speaker.”

***Phone Call***

“Hello,” Sam says.

“What the hell is going on?” Vincent yells.

“Nothing here,” Sam tells him.

“I've been with Sam the whole time,” I add.

Vincent flatly tells me, “Eva send this zoo home.”

“There's no zoo here so it's not like I can just show up,” I retort.

“I have not listened to your thoughts to give you space but I know that you’ve done something again,” he says.

I just laugh.

“I knew I was right. What now?” he asks.

Gran butts in for me, “Well hello Vincent.”

“Adele?” he asks softly.

This is cute. They know each other. I look at Sam and he smirks. No wonder he is so confident around Vincent and Eric. He knows them better than he has let on.

“Yes, Vincent,” she says to him.

“She's not turned anyone into a pumpkin or anything has she?” he asks.

Gran lets out that booming laugh of hers, “Not yet but the day is still young. She's a bit spirited for you I can tell.”

“Don’t encourage her,” Vincent pleads.

“Oh she's got plenty of ideas all on her own. You have no clue how special she is, do you?” she asks him.

“Do you know something?” he asks.

“Oh course I do. You might too if you think hard enough,” she tells him.

He sighs, “No riddles today, I don't have the patience for it. Katie keeps trying to bring in any creature she can catch.”

“Where's Eric?” I ask him.

“I'm here watching,” Eric says.

“I figured as much because Vincent didn't hesitate to call you,” I tell him.

“You said to babysit,” Eric reminds me.

Gran laughs, “The vampire Prince babysitting, now I have heard it all.”

“You try to tell Eva no,” Eric tells her.

“Oh I've seen my sons try and fail. One ended up a bit wet,” she says.

“Eva! No powers!” Vincent yells.

“Oh it's fine she's very cunning, only I suspected,” she reassures him.

“When a woman unites these two qualities-resolution and cunning--what is there she cannot effect?” I say to Vincent.

“Shakespeare wouldn't last a day dealing with you,” he tells me.

“Good thing he doesn't have to,” I retort.

“Fuck my eternity!” he exclaims.

Gran laughs, “Now focus, Vincent think back to when you were turned. The war.”

“What's this about?” he asks her.

“An idea I have. Do you remember the order?” she asks him.

“The group of wolves, vampires, witches, and humans that died to end it.

Yeah what does that have to do with anything?” he asks.

“Was the vampire that turned you part of the order?” she asks him.

“I don't believe so. He wasn't with anyone and I was never taken to any meetings. He never talked of the war much either,” he answers.

“Rogue then. That's fine. He still might know something,” she adds.

“What's this about?” Eric asks.

“The White Wolf Prophecy,” she says.

“The wolf that was a witch,” Vincent says.

“No, she was a wolf that had the powers of a witch. She was both a wolf and a witch. I

think maybe her wolf just stayed hidden by her magic. I have theories but cannot be

certain. But does that sound like anyone you know?” she adds.

“But Eva has vampiric abilities too and multiple mates,” Eric says.

“She's different but the same I suspect,” Gran says.

“So you think the prophecy is happening again?” Vincent asks her.

“Possibly. Take her to your maker. We need to know if war is coming. That's all I can tell you all,” she answers.

“I'm sorry Vincent I know you don't want to go back,” I say.

“I said I would if I had a reason to,” he tells me.

“We need to find out about this ritual that Eva is a threat to as well because it is not part of the prophecy,” Eric says.

I see Gran think for a minute, but she seems to dismiss the thought that she just had. Is she hiding something or is blocked somehow? Is that why I can't hear her thoughts?

“Go there that's all the advice I can give. There might not be another war but there is trouble on the horizon,” she tells us all.

I decided to steer the conversation away from the dire direction I felt it going, “Oh boys.”

“Seriously,” Vincent barks.

I roll my eyes, “Either tonight or tomorrow I'll be beckoning you here.”

“Why?” Eric asks.

“Victor,” I say.

With his voice tinged in anger, Vincent asks, “How?”

Gran says, “He's been harassing my pack and a couple of others. He's do back soon as I refuse to give him the answer he wants. I smell so much evil on that vampire.”

I smile, “I'll be happy to end him too.”

“Eva!” Vincent yells.

“You know you want to,” I reply.

“Definitely,” Vincent says.

Eric reminds us, “We need to follow the rules.”

“Um.I don't,” I say.

“Eva!” Eric yells.

I shrug, “What? I'm undefinable, so therefore I don't have to follow your rules, dear Prince.”

Gran and Sam laugh.

“Sam you're just going to sit there?” Eric asks him.

He grins, “Yep.”

“You rethinking everything, yet?” Gran asks Eric.

“I'm thinking letting Sam take her was a bad idea,” he says.

“Why? I'm perfectly happy here,” I say.

“Adele please don't encourage her. She's enough already,” Eric tells her.

Gran defends me, “All I did was have her show me a few of her abilities. No one else suspects anything. Just be ready when Victor shows. She's pretty sure he's responsible for the turnings and unauthorized feedings too.”

“You know what all I can do,” I say.

“Just get the confession,” Eric tells me.

“Oh I will then I'm torturing him a bit too,” I say.

“Eva!” Vincent bellows.

“He deserves it,” I say.

“Eva!” Katie yells.

“Hey Katie,” I say.

“You won't believe what showed up!” she excitedly says.

“What?” I inquire.

“A llama, emu, and a tiger now. It's so awesome!” she beams.

“No way!” I say.

“It's so cool. Are you doing this?” she asks.

“Not intentionally if I am,” I tell her and that's the truth too. I have no clue how the zoo got there or why.

“I heard Vincent swear and then mumbled something about you controlling animals,” she tells me.

“Yeah I can,” I say.

“Like Snow White,” she replies.

Sam laughs, “That's what I've been calling her.”

“So she really can?” she asks him.

He tells her yes and she's just on Cloud Nine. I really do love her and her love of life.

“You must be her best friend,” Gran says to Katie.

“I am,” she answers proudly.

“I'm her new grandmother. Everyone calls me Gran,” she tells her.

“Nice to meet you,” she says to her.

“When the guys come to help deal with Victor they can bring you. I'd like you to meet our pack,” she says.

This is great. The Falls are willing to bring my family into theirs. This too is home!

“That'd be cool,” Katie answers.

“Adele, are you sure?” Vincent asks Gran.

“She'll be fine,” she says with a smile.

“No I mean can you handle…” Vincent trails off.

“Shit!” Eric exclaims.

“What?” I ask.

“She was trying to get the tiger to shake,” Vincent says.

I laugh, “What? It’s cute. She's got a lust for life.”

“How do you deal with it every day?” Eric asks me.

“It's not that bad,” I answer.

Sam backs me, “I'm with Eva on this.”

“Great you two babysit her next time!” Vincent says.

“Well maybe I just won't come home,” I say.

After a long pause…

“You called it home,” Vincent says softly.

I playfully roll my eyes, “You must be hearing things.”

“I know what I heard and felt,” he says.

“Hmmm you might be coming down with something from dealing with the zoo,” I say.

“You're impossible!” he exclaims.

“What? I'm trying to enjoy a nice break from the city and you're calling and whining about a few stray animals,” I tell him.

“There's hundreds Eva,” Vincent says.

“It's not like I have a handbook on this or anything,” I tell them.

“There has to be something,” Eric says.

“Um tell them to go home,” I suggest.

“Really that's all you've got to say,” Vincent says.

“Yeah,” I reply.

“There's a white tiger on the lounge chair on the deck and your advice is to tell it to go home,” Eric tells me.

“Yeah,” I answer.

“Vincent said these beasts started showing up a few hours after you left. What did you do?” Eric asks.

Now I'm nervous, “Um.”

“Eva, tell him what you told me,” Vincent says.

So I told the whole story about how I possessed a bird and dealt with that trucker.

“Eva!” Vincent yells.

“I had to,” I say.

“No you chose to,” he said sternly.

“No! I had to. He'd done it before I saw. He forged his logs too and was on drugs. I couldn't let him get away with it,” I say.

“You saw? But please say you didn't,” Eric says.

I explain, “He's alive. I possessed a bird and made him confess. It's probably on the news or at least all over social media by now. But yes I saw. When the bird I hopped in saw the wreck happening I saw his past.”

Vincent sighs, “I still don't understand why they're all here.”

“They seek Eva. Why else?,” Gran says.

“I'm not running a zoo,” Vincent states.

She laughs, “You are right now.”

“Not funny Adele!” he exclaims.

Still laughing, “But it so is,” she says.

“Well good luck guys. I'm going to go eat and then kick some ass on an obstacle course,” I tell them.

“No cheating!” Vincent orders.

“Any woman who is sure of her own wits, is a match, at any time, for a man who is not sure of his own temper,” I tell him.

“Collins won't save you,” he tells me.

“But good old Wilkie Collins can help me beat a bunch of quick tempered wolves. I know my audience,” I say.

“Just be careful,” he tells me.

“She's fine,” Sam tells him.

“Oh, I bet,” Vincent says snidely.

“Watch your tone!” I warn him.

“Stop that!” he exclaims.

I smirk, “I have no clue what you're talking about.”

“Damn it, Eva!” he yells.

“Stop trying to pick a fight with Sam,” I demand.

“Get this damn cat off of me!” he screeches.

“Nope,” I answer. He will learn a lesson.

“It's crawling up his pant leg,” Eric says.

“Oh I'm very aware,” I answer him.

“Eva!” Vincent yells.

“Say you're sorry or my little kitty will show you her claws,” I tell him.

Sam and Gran are cracking up to the point of tears.

“You win, sorry Sam,” Vincent says.

Sam chuckles, “Guess you learned not to piss off my Snow White.”

“Eva you're the fucking Devil!” Vincent tells me.

“Nah, I'm too sweet to be that,” I tease.

“Tell this zoo to leave,” Vincent says.

“I don't hear the magic words,” I reply.

“Please tell it to leave,” he says.

“Hmmm…” I hum.

“My dear Eva, can you please tell the zoo to leave,” he says sweetly.

I laugh, “Better.”

I possess the tiger. I have it roar and the others slowly start to leave.

“Thank you,” Eric says.

“You're welcome,” I reply.

“Suck up,” Vincent teases.

“Jealous much,” I say to him.

“Just behave and no more adventures please,” he says.

“I'll talk to you both later when I have Victor,” I tell them.

“Goodbye everyone,” Vincent says.

“Bye Adele, Sam keep her safe,” Eric says.

“I plan to,” Sam answers him.

“Bye Eva,” Eric says.

“Bye guys,” I say.

****End Call***

“Now that was entertaining,” Gran says as she's still laughing.

“Her and Vincent always bicker like that,” Sam tells her.

“It's because she gets under his skin. He's not used to anyone questioning him,” she tells Sam.

I laugh, “It's fun too.”

“You're doing well,” Gran tells me.

“Thanks,” I reply.

“Why the cat?” she asks.

I sigh, “I can't do anything directly to my mates, but using a spell I can to an extent.”

“Very clever,” she says proudly.

——-Gran’s POV———

When I first saw them pull up, I knew that they were mates. I also knew that our pack would have a

Luna at last. Then I saw her wolf. I thought that the prophecy might be coming true yet again, but something feels off.

She's not a descendant of the White Wolf as the prophecy foretells, she's something far different. But it is best that to all she is the White Wolf returned.

Part of me knows that I should know what she is, but I just can't tap into it. I have always had the ability to detect other beings, but I can't her. I need to understand why. Did my mate not fully tell me of how he knew the White Wolf? Surely, he wouldn't prevent me from knowing anything that could stop Armageddon? Something just doesn't feel right. The White Wolf gifted my family, could this be why Eva is here?
