Eternally Bound Chapter 39: Finding Darkness

Bael gazed longingly into my eyes, “So even with added participants, your mother's design still came to fruition.”

“You said she wanted me to have light, darkness, and neutrality each represented by a mate. Yet somehow I ended up with added darkness. Do you know why?”

“I don't know for certain. Here is what I do think. ‘A painter should begin every canvas with a wash of black, because all things in nature are dark except where exposed by the light.’ -Leonardo da Vinci. I think that you needed this added darkness to make your light shine brighter,” he revealed.

It suddenly started to make sense, “Because only in total darkness can you truly see and appreciate the stars,” I replied.

With a smile on his face, Bael nods, “Exactly. Plus you already have some darkness in you from your father because you appreciate dark humor just as he does. I am very pleased by that too,” he says as he pulls me close as he looks into my eyes. His gaze heats as he continues, “I know that you remember nothing of your lives before. They ended but now things are different. Feel the difference,” he begs as he runs his free hand through my hair as he keeps our other hands together.

I feel our energies begin to mingle. He places a kiss on my forehead. “You are eternal. Making our bond eternal at last,” he said as he ran his finger that was in my hair along my jaw. “But not until you choose to accept it. I have waited for eons and I will wait more if that is what it takes,” he says with the utmost sincerity.

I want to find something wrong in his tone or words, but I can't. He's being completely genuine. I can see why he was chosen for me but how did my mother know? Unfortunately, not all arranged pairings work out, because I have seen many human-arranged marriages fail. Does it being a supernatural bond defy what I know? Perhaps, perhaps not. Is a part of my mother's soul in Cass and me? Is that why we are drawn to the people who we are? I have so many unanswered questions. I wish that I could have known my mother or at least had one conversation with her.

I find Bael similar to Vincent. He possesses both lightness and darkness but that light shines brightest around me. I know that this is not cheating because my mates honor bonds but I am still clinging to human values. Should I not live by human rules anymore? Do I give into the pull of the mate bond or do I return home and wait to see if it lessens?
