Chapter 50 The Alliance Forms (Silas POV)

Chapter 50 The Alliance Forms (Silas POV)

The encrypted message arrives at 9 PM, sixteen hours after Victoria took Mira.
Wards disabled. Compound vulnerable. 24-hour window for rescue. Detention wing, cell block C. Move fast. -Aleksander
I stare at the message for exactly ten seconds, processing implications.
The Ashford siblings disabled the compound's defenses from inside. They're giving us a window. A chance.
But mounting an assault on a Silver Dawn facility, even with wards down, means war. Open conflict with a hunter organization that has Council sanction and centuries of political leverage.
Every supernatural faction that respects established authority will condemn us. We'll become outlaws, criminals, terrorists in the eyes of the supernatural community.
But Mira dies if we don't act.
Three students are prisoners. The Ascension happens in twenty-four hours. And we have one shot at preventing genocide disguised as righteous crusade.
Not really a choice at all.
I send out emergency summons to everyone who might help. My coven first. Then the werewolf pack. Silvercrest students who can fight. The Underground Network contacts I've cultivated over decades.
And one message I never thought I'd send.
Damien Corvus. Victoria Ashford is creating a vampire plague from Shadowborn blood. If you want to survive what's coming, meet at Silvercrest. One hour. -Silas Thorne
Sixty minutes later, the Silvercrest war room is packed with the most unlikely alliance I've assembled in four hundred years.
My coven: Cain, Lyra, Rafael, Marcus, Dominique, Sophie. All present despite the risks.
The werewolf pack: Ashley, Marcus (the wolf), Jordan, Sam. Diminished but committed.
Approximately thirty Silvercrest students, supernatural and human, who volunteered to fight despite having every reason to evacuate instead.
And walking through the door with casual arrogance that makes everyone tense: Damien Corvus.
He's brought forces. Twenty vampires, ranging from two to five centuries old. Not his entire strength, but enough to make a difference. They file in behind him, predatory and dangerous and very clearly not here for altruistic reasons.
"Silas." Damien inclines his head in mock courtesy. "When you said Victoria was creating a plague, I assumed you were being metaphorical. Then I did research. Turns out you were being literal."
"The Ascension ritual will weaponize Mira's Shadowborn blood as an airborne agent targeting vampires. Everyone within five hundred miles dies within days. Possibly more depending on how it spreads."
"And you know this how?"
"Aleksander Ashford provided intelligence before he and his sister disabled the compound wards to enable our rescue." I pull up the schematics Aleksander sent. "The ritual happens in twenty-four hours. We have one window to extract Mira and stop it."
Damien studies the maps with professional interest. "Ambitious. Suicidal, really, attacking a hunter compound even with wards down. But better than dying from plague, I suppose."
"This isn't an invitation to friendship. This is strategic necessity."
"Obviously. The enemy of my enemy is my temporary ally. Don't mistake this for friendship." He looks around at the assembled supernaturals. "Though I am curious how you plan to assault a fortified compound with this... eclectic force."
"Carefully. With significant casualties expected on both sides."
"Honest. I appreciate that." Damien pulls out his own intelligence. "I've been monitoring Silver Dawn activities for decades. They're predictable. Security rotates every six hours. Victoria runs a tight operation but she's not subtle. Once the wards are down, the compound is vulnerable to coordinated assault."
"You're offering tactical support."
"I'm offering resources. Dark witches to counter Victoria's magic users. Vampires with centuries of combat experience. Intelligence on compound layout and defensive protocols." He smiles without warmth. "In exchange, when we rescue the Shadowborn, I want assurances she won't be used as a weapon by anyone. Not Victoria. Not you. Not anyone."
"Mira's agency is her own. I won't trade one form of imprisonment for another."
"Good. Then we have temporary alignment of interests." Damien spreads the compound schematics across the table. "Here's what I know about Silver Dawn defensive positions..."
For the next hour, we plan. Damien's intelligence combined with Aleksander's layouts gives us detailed understanding of the compound's vulnerabilities.
Main entrance is heavily fortified but predictable. They'll expect assault there. Eastern perimeter has weaker physical barriers, designed to rely on wards that are now disabled. Detention wing is central, heavily guarded, but accessible through maintenance tunnels.
"Three-pronged approach," I suggest. "Main force at the entrance draws their defenders. Secondary team hits the eastern perimeter. Extraction team uses maintenance tunnels to reach detention and get Mira, Zara, and Jax out."
"Who leads extraction?" Marcus asks.
Everyone looks at Cain.
He's been silent throughout the planning, staring at the schematics with an expression I can't read. Since Victoria took Mira, he's been barely functional. Guilt and fear and the crushing weight of having pushed her away only to watch her surrender.
"Cain?" I prompt gently.
"I'll lead extraction." His voice is flat. "I pushed her away. I should be the one to bring her back."
"That's emotional reasoning," Lyra says. "Not tactical."
"I don't care. I need to be the one who gets her out."
"You pushed her away because you were afraid. Now you have a chance to actually save her instead of just martyring yourself emotionally. What are you going to do?"
The challenge hangs in the air. Cain finally looks up, meeting Lyra's eyes.
"I'm going to save her. Whatever it takes. Even if it kills me."
"Better. But try to survive the rescue. Dead heroes don't help anyone."
"Extraction team needs to be small," Damien observes. "Three, maybe four people maximum. Any more and you're too visible in the tunnels."
"Cain, Rafael, and Ashley," I decide. "Vampire speed for the tunnels, werewolf strength for breaking cells. Rafael has medical training for treating injuries. Cain knows Mira well enough to keep her calm during extraction."
Ashley nods acceptance. Rafael looks grim but committed.
"What about the main assault force?" Marcus  asks.
"I'll lead that personally. Draw Victoria's attention, force her to commit her defenders to the entrance while extraction happens." I look at the assembled fighters. "Casualties will be significant. Hunters are well-trained and well-armed. We're not fighting amateurs."
"But we have surprise," Damien adds. "Victoria thinks her compound is secure. She's not expecting assault, especially not one enabled by internal sabotage from her own children."
"Where are Aleksander and Vivian?" Sophie asks.
"Unknown. Last communication indicated they're being hunted by Silver Dawn after Victoria discovered their betrayal. They may or may not survive long enough to help during the assault."
Grim silence as everyone processes that.
"The eastern perimeter force needs magical support," I continue. "Without Zara, we're down our strongest witch. Who can counter Victoria's magic users?"
"My witches," Damien says. "They're experienced in combat magic. Dark witches, yes, but effective. They'll handle Victoria's magical defenses."
I don't like relying on dark magic practitioners, but options are limited. "Agreed. Who leads the eastern force?"
"I will." Lyra stands. "I'm not sitting out a fight where Cain might die heroically. Someone needs to make sure he survives his rescue attempt."
"I'll go with Lyra," Marcus  volunteers. "Four hundred years of experience should count for something."
The teams form naturally. Main assault: me, Dominique, Sophie, most of the Silvercrest students, Damien's vampires. Eastern perimeter: Lyra, Marcus, Jordan, Sam, Damien's dark witches. Extraction: Cain, Rafael, Ashley.
"Timing?" Rafael asks.
"We move in eighteen hours. 3 AM assault. Gives us six hours before the Ascension begins at 9 AM." I check the chronology. "Aleksander said we have twenty-four hours, but Victoria will accelerate the ceremony if she suspects rescue. We can't wait until the last minute."
"What about after extraction?" Cain asks. "Once we have Mira, Zara, and Jax, how do we evacuate under fire?"
"Northwestern perimeter. Least defended because it backs onto cliffs. Damien's forces create an opening, we extract through there to vehicles positioned two miles out."
"Cliffs?" Ashley looks skeptical.
"Eighty-foot drop. But there's a trail. Steep, dangerous, but navigable. Victoria doesn't guard it heavily because she thinks it's inaccessible."
"So our escape route is an eighty-foot cliff trail under fire from hunters while carrying injured prisoners." Rafael's voice is dry. "Excellent. No problems there."
"You have a better option?"
"No. Just acknowledging this plan is insane."
"All the best plans are." I pull up the final coordination timeline. "We're committing to open warfare against a Council-sanctioned hunter organization. Every supernatural faction that values political stability will condemn us. We'll be outlaws. Criminals. Hunted."
