Chapter 66 How Dare You Doubt Me
Eric shot me a glance and casually poured me a cup of tea.
"Come here," he said, patting the spot next to him.
I rubbed my neck and plopped down beside him without a second thought.
My neck felt awful, like I had been beaten up at night. Except Eric, I couldn't think of anyone else with the guts to do such a thing.
Ignoring my stare, Eric reached out and started massaging the sore spot on my neck. "Does it hurt?"
I immediately felt a wave of self-pity and nodded quickly. "Yeah, it hurts a lot. Did you hit me while I was sleeping last night? Otherwise, why would I feel this bad?"
Eric kept a straight face and continued to massage my neck.
Just when I thought he was going to brush off my question, he pulled a bottle of medicine from his pocket. "You've got a stiff neck. Apply some of this when you have time. Don't blame everything on me."
Sensing he was getting annoyed, I looked at him suspiciously. "Are you sure?"
Eric snapped, "Emily, who gave you the guts to doubt me?"
"I wouldn't dare. Just kidding," I said, shaking my head quickly, afraid he'd get upset and take it out on me.
Fortunately, he didn't say anything during the mealtime.
Then Willie sent me a message, arranging for us to meet at our usual spot.
If I got bitten by the little white snake a few more times, my body would be back to normal.
If it were yesterday, I might have eagerly gone, but now Eric was right beside me. Honestly, I didn't have the guts.
Telling Eric that I was going to meet another man would drive him crazy.
Eric was leisurely signing some documents. Seeing my hesitation, he frowned deeply.
"Your neck hurts, not your limbs. Do you need me to carry you to the bathroom?" His cold tone left me speechless.
In the end, I mustered the courage to tell him my plan. "I'm going to see Willie. A few more times and it'll be resolved."
I carefully watched his expression.
Luckily, Eric didn't object. He just continued signing the documents. "Drive yourself."
I was stunned and quickly walked up to him. "You're really letting me go?"
Eric looked up, puzzled. "Why wouldn't I? I don't want you dead."
I lowered my head in disappointment and muttered, "I thought you'd be jealous. Turns out you don't care much about me. I was overthinking."
Eric clearly heard my words, and his tone grew colder. "Emily, I've noticed you're getting a bit full of yourself lately, daring to guess my thoughts. Stop being so self-absorbed and get lost."
I forced a fake smile and replied stiffly, "As long as you don't care, that's good. I wouldn't want you to get mad if I developed feelings for Willie. Now that I know how you feel, I won't worry. Besides, Willie fits my aesthetic and gets my jokes."
After testing his patience, I quickly left before he could throw the documents at me.
The moment I stepped out of the hall, I felt relieved.
But the next second, Eric's eerie warning echoed in my ear. "If you don't want to die, come back early."
I was still angry about his earlier words, so I didn't bother explaining.
When I arrived at the meeting spot, Willie was already there.
Seeing me, Willie was resting on a bench, looking tired as if he'd pulled an all-nighter.
I walked over and greeted him.
This time, the little white snake was faster than us. I said, "The little white snake is getting used to this. It's even taking the initiative."
I gritted my teeth and forced a smile through the pain.
Willie rubbed his temples, his voice hoarse and tired. "I'm gonna be tied up for a bit. You can hang onto the little white snake for now. Just give it back when you're back on your feet."
I stiffened, holding the little white snake. I wasn't exactly a snake person. If I pissed it off and it bit me, I'd be toast.
As I hesitated, Willie suddenly got serious. "Be careful lately. There's a female serial killer in Starlight City targeting young, beautiful girls, and she always strikes on rainy days. I'm helping a big seafood supplier find the killer. Based on my investigation, this individual is no ordinary character. Her approach is precise and effective, not like your average person. You better watch out."
Hearing his description, I felt like I had a target on my back.
Out of curiosity, I asked, "Isn't anyone reporting such a dangerous thing?"
Since she targeted pretty girls, the public should be aware.
It was the rainy season in Starlight City. If I ran into that psycho killer, I'd be doomed.
If Willie hadn't warned me, who would have thought such a thing could happen?
"Her methods are too brutal. If exposed, it would cause widespread panic. The police and I are still confirming things. We just need to wait for her to appear again." Willie looked murderous, his earlier gentleness gone.
I wanted to ask for more details, but his phone rang.
Willie answered, his face looking even worse.
After hanging up, he glanced at my car and said softly, "Good thing you drove. I have an urgent matter to handle. You can ask that old man to pick you up. I don't feel safe leaving you alone."
I waved my hand. "It's fine. It's sunny today. She shouldn't appear."
Willie was about to continue persuading me when he saw a man sitting on a bench in the park's corner.
He chuckled self-deprecatingly. "I guess I was overthinking."
Confused, I followed his gaze and saw the black-clad figure on the bench. He was in a suit, looking like an unemployed insurance salesman, really conspicuous.
I rolled my eyes, speechless.
When I left, Eric acted so nonchalant that I thought he really trusted me to be alone outside. It turned out he secretly followed me.
Eric was really a man with a tough exterior but a soft heart.
Willie hurried off as I slowly walked over to Eric.
When I stood beside him, I saw he was holding a cat that looked familiar.
I asked softly, "Why are you here?"
Eric glanced at me, his expression indifferent. "The cat wants fish. I came here to see if there's a seafood market around. But I don't know the way."
I glanced at the cat wriggling in his arms, then thought of Jonathan, who was already mad at him. He sure knew how to come up with excuses.
I wrapped the little white snake around my hand and said softly, "I'll just assume you came because you were worried about me."
Eric was taken aback and raised an eyebrow. "Don't flatter yourself."
I couldn't be bothered and pointed at the little white snake. "Willie asked me to take care of it. Help me out."
Eric looked at me and the little white snake with a strange expression.
Finally, he frowned in disgust. "It's ugly. Keep it away. Go find your dumb friend."
