Chapter 172 Burns
Chapter 172 Burns
Ilaria's POV
I absolutely refused to draw my rapier, unstrap my spell-whip, or construct an offensive military barrier against a frightened ten-year-old child.
The roaring vortex continued to tear through the village square with terrifying, unpredictable force. Heavy chunks of shattered granite masonry were hurled into the air like weightless pebbles, while intense thermal heat blackened the thick wooden beams of the surrounding storefronts. The atmosphere was dense with the suffocating stench of scorched clay, melted iron door hinges, and raw ozone. Standard military doctrine taught by the senior tactical masters at the Citadel explicitly dictated that an unstable, unbonded magical surge should be brutally suppressed with heavy nullification fields to protect civilian infrastructure at all costs. I knew from my grandmother's private teachings that applying crude physical or magical force to an unanchored child would only push Toby's panicked mind into fatal heart failure or trigger a massive, destructive arcane detonation that would level the entire province block.
I took a firm, deliberate step past the line of panicked village guards and directly into the swirling, violent edge of the elemental storm.
The exact moment my heavy leather riding boot crossed the outer threshold of the vortex, a violent wave of superheated wind slammed into my chest. The impact attempted to throw me backward onto the cracked cobblestones, but I planted my heels deep into the ruined ground and allowed my partial dragon wings to fully unfurl from between my shoulder blades. The massive, iridescent structures opened with a deep, resonant hum that vibrated through my bones. Their shimmering violet and gold scales caught the fierce red glare of the wild fire, gleaming like polished armor in the dusty sunlight.
I curved my wings forward around my body, creating a heavy, heat-resistant physical shield that diverted the flying debris away from the surrounding wooden homes. The temperature inside my protective scale cocoon soared to an unbearable level within seconds, but the ancient, dragon-bound magic flowing through my veins kept the fierce thermal heat from blistering my skin.
"Toby!" I called out, projecting my voice to carry cleanly over the deafening screech of the wind while keeping my tone gentle, steady, and entirely devoid of anger. "Look at me, Toby. You are safe now. No one here is going to hurt you today."
The child lifted his tear-stained face from his knees, his dark eyes wide with unbridled, primal terror. His pupils were completely dilated, encircled by glowing, unstable rings of orange and brown elemental energy that flickered erratically with every ragged breath he drew. The raw magic was consuming his small body from the inside out, burning through his young veins because his mind lacked the structural discipline to shut down the conduit.
"I cannot stop it!" Toby sobbed, his small voice almost entirely swallowed by the deafening howl of the wild wind. "It burns my chest so much! It will not stop coming out of my hands!"
"I know it hurts," I said, taking another calm, measured step toward him through the intense heat, allowing my boots to crush the glowing coals beneath my soles. "Your magic is simply trying to find a safe place to rest, Toby. It feels far too big for your small hands right now, but you do not have to carry this immense weight all by yourself. Focus completely on my eyes and listen to the sound of my voice."
I activated my violet-gold core, sending a soft, rhythmic wave of harmonized dragon energy pulsing outward from my chest. The gentle frequency brushed softly against his chaotic elemental storm, offering his wild, unstructured power a calm, geometric pattern to follow. I reached the absolute center of the vortex and knelt directly in the scorched earth in front of him, bringing myself down to his physical eye level so he would not view me as a threat.
"Breathe with me," I instructed softly, holding my bare hands inches from his trembling palms without forcing direct physical contact yet. "In through your nose, and out through your mouth. Let the extra fire flow down through your legs and deep into the solid earth beneath your boots. The ground is vast and strong enough to take all of it without breaking."
Toby gasped, his small chest heaving as he fought desperately to match my slow, rhythmic breathing pattern. For a brief, terrifying second, the elemental vortex flared much brighter, threatening to consume both of us in a flash of blinding thermal energy. I held my ground without moving an inch, keeping my gaze steady, warm, and filled with absolute, unwavering confidence in his ability to survive this ordeal.
Slowly, the screeching wind began to quiet down. The flying rocks dropped to the dirt with heavy, harmless thuds, and the swirling flames shrank into flickering, harmless threads of amber light.
I reached out and gently wrapped my fingers around his small, trembling hands, pulling the remaining excess energy out of his burning core and routing it safely through my own system down into the deep stone beneath us. The air in the public square fell into a sudden, miraculous silence, broken only by the quiet crackle of cooling timber.
Toby collapsed forward with a heavy sob, his physical and magical strength completely spent. I pulled his small, trembling form into my arms, holding him close and smoothing his dust-covered hair as he wept uncontrollably against my shoulder in total exhaustion.
As I comforted the weeping boy, my fingers brushed against his thin wrists to check his pulse rate. The skin beneath my touch felt unnaturally cold despite the fierce heat of the vortex that had just vanished. I carefully pulled back his dirt-stained cloth sleeves to examine his forearms in the bright afternoon sunlight.
Faint, dark purple rings wrapped completely around both of his delicate wrists in rigid geometric patterns.
My heart chilled instantly. The discoloration was not a natural bruise from the physical toll of the magical awakening, nor was it a thermal burn from his own fire. It was a distinct, chemical-magical reaction caused by prolonged contact with anti-magic nullification dust. Someone had physically bound this orphan boy prior to his outburst, applying a crude suppression compound directly to his skin in an attempt to neutralize his core before his powers matured. The violent awakening had occurred precisely because his growing magic had violently ruptured through the unnatural physical constraint.
Someone was actively hunting Resonant children on the outskirts of the capital city, and they were using specialized military weapons to do it.
I pulled Toby's frayed sleeves back down over his arms, my jaw setting tightly as a dark, unyielding resolve took hold in my mind.
