The Other Seals
The tunnel didn't lead to Webb and Katerina. Instead, it ended at an empty subway stop that hadn't been used in fifty years.
"They're gone," Viktor said, kicking an old newspaper across the dirty platform.
Luca inspected the microchip they'd taken from the Archive. "But we have this. And we know about the other seals now."
They found a new hiding place—the basement of an old bookstore owned by one of Luca's trusted men. As cops searched the city for them, they dug deeper into the files from the Archive.
"Look at this," Luca said, referring to his laptop screen. "The jade seals aren't just keys. They're much older than The Network."
The file showed pictures of ancient jade seals with detailed carvings. According to the documents, they were made over five hundred years ago by merchant families across Asia and Europe.
"Secret trade routes," Viktor read. "Hidden fortunes. Protected by these seven seals."
"And The Network repurposed them," Luca added. "Each seal now controls access to different parts of their organization."
Viktor studied the map showing the sites of all seven seals. "We have one. Webb must have at least one. That leaves five more out there."
"And each one opens new doors," Luca said. "If we can find them..."
Viktor looked determined. "Then let's hunt."
The next morning, they visited an antique dealer in Chinatown who specialized in jade items. The old woman's eyes widened when they explained what they were looking for.
"The Seven Seals of the Silent Path," she whispered. "They are not for sale. Not for hundreds of years."
"We're not looking to buy," Viktor explained. "Just to find them."
The woman studied them carefully. "Why?"
"To stop bad people from using them," Luca said bluntly.
Something in his voice must have convinced her. She shuffled to the back room and returned with an old book.
"This shows where they were last seen," she stated. "Before they disappeared from history."
The book recorded the last known locations of five seals:
• The Tiger Seal: Petrov Family Collection, Moscow
• The Phoenix Seal: Hong Kong Heritage Museum
• The Dragon Seal: Chang Family (returned recently)
• The Tortoise Seal: Vatican Secret Archives
• The Snake Seal: Moretti Family Vault, Sicily
Luca looked shocked. "My family had one?"
"And the Chang family has another," Viktor realized. "The jade dragon we returned to them."
The old woman nodded. "The last seal—the Wolf Seal—belongs to your family, Sokolov."
"We already have that one," Viktor said.
"No," she replied. "You have the Fox Seal. The Wolf still waits."
Viktor and Luca exchanged confused looks. If the seal they had wasn't the Sokolov family's original seal, whose was it?
They left with more questions than answers. But they had leads now—starting with the Chang family.
Mr. Chang received them with surprising warmth. When they explained what they needed, he opened a jade box—the same one Anya had returned to him.
"The Dragon has protected my family for generations," he said, showing them the beautiful jade dragon. "I didn't know it opened anything."
Like their own seal, the dragon contained a hidden compartment with a microchip. When they plugged it into Luca's laptop, new files appeared—financial records for The Network's operations across Asia.
"Each seal reveals different information," Luca realized.
"And gives different powers," Viktor added, seeing a list of access codes and contacts.
They thanked Mr. Chang, who allowed them to copy the data but kept his seal. "My family has suffered enough for this dragon," he explained.
Next, they contacted Luca's cousin in Sicily about the Snake Seal. After a tense video call, she agreed to search the family vault.
"It's here," she confirmed hours later, holding up a jade snake. "Hidden in a false bottom of grandfather's old box."
She sent them photos of documents stored with the seal—records of The Network's influence in European governments.
"That's three seals we know about," Viktor said as they updated their map. "Plus whatever my mother and Webb have."
"We need to get to the others," Luca insisted. "Before The Network realizes what we're doing."
They planned carefully. The Hong Kong museum would be impossible to access. The Vatican archives even harder. But the Petrov collection in Moscow...
"I know someone," Viktor said. "An art thief who owes me a favor."
Three days later, they received a package from Moscow containing detailed photos of the Tiger Seal and its contents. The information was shocking—breeding programs, genetic research, decades of manipulating bloodlines among the crime families.
"They were designing people," Luca said in horror. "Creating specific traits in family lines. Aggression. Intelligence. Loyalty."
Viktor felt sick. "Were our fathers chosen to marry our mothers?"
"Maybe even our grandparents," Luca replied. "Generations of planning."
As they absorbed this disturbing revelation, Tony finally made contact. He had escaped during The Cleansing but had been in hiding.
"Anya's alive," he told them. "Being held at a Network facility upstate. They're questioning her about the seals."
"They know we're collecting them," Viktor realized.
That night, as they planned Anya's rescue, Viktor received a strange email. No sender name, just a video link.
The video showed Katerina sitting at a desk in what looked like an office high above the city.
"Hello, son," she said. "By now you've learned about the seals. About their true power. About what The Network has been doing to our families for generations."
She held up a jade wolf—the missing Sokolov seal.
"This is your birthright. The Wolf Seal controls everything—the other seals, The Network itself. Richard Webb stole it from your grandfather. That's why I had to stop him."
Her expression darkened. "I didn't marry your father for love, Viktor. I married him to stay close to the Sokolov power. To wait for my chance to reclaim what Webb took."
Viktor couldn't believe what he was hearing. His entire childhood—a strategy in his mother's decades-long game.
"Marcus thinks he controls The Network," Katerina continued. "But without this seal, he's just a figurehead. The real power has always been with the Wolf."
She leaned closer to the camera. "Find me, Viktor. Bring the seals you've gathered. It's time for the Sokolov family to take back what's ours—control of The Network."
The video finished. Luca placed a hand on Viktor's shoulder.
"She wants to control The Network, not destroy it," Luca said quietly.
Viktor nodded, numb. "She's been using us. Again."
"What now?"
Before Viktor could answer, his phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number:
"Don't trust Katerina. The Wolf Seal she showed you is fake. The real one is held by The Architect—the true leader of The Network. I can take you to them."
"Who is this?" Viktor texted back.
The reply sent chills down his spine:
"Your father. I'm alive too."
Attached was a picture of Viktor's father—older, scarred, but unmistakable—holding a newspaper from yesterday.
"Another trick?" Luca asked, staring at the picture.
"I don't know anymore," Viktor revealed. "My mother. My half-brother. Now my father. Everyone I thought was dead is alive and playing some game."
Luca's laptop rang with an alert. The tracking program they'd put on the Tiger Seal photos had activated.
"Someone accessed the Moscow files," Luca said. "From a location in..." He frowned. "That can't be right."
"Where?" Viktor asked.
"Under the city. Deep under. In a place that doesn't exist on any map."
The screen showed a blinking dot beneath Manhattan—far deeper than any train or basement.
"What's down there?" Viktor wondered.
"The Architect," Luca guessed. "And the Wolf Seal."
Viktor looked at the photo of his apparently dead father, then at the map showing the mysterious underground location.
"We need to end this," he decided. "Find The Architect. Get the Wolf Seal. Stop The Network once and for all."
"And your parents?" Luca asked softly.
Viktor's jaw clenched. "They made their choices. Now I make mine."
As they gathered their weapons and the seals they'd collected, neither spotted the small drone hovering outside their window, watching and listening to every word.
In an apartment across the city, Marcus Webb smiled as he watched their preparations on his monitor.
"They're coming," he told someone off-screen. "Just as you predicted."
A gloved hand put a jade wolf on the table between them.
"Perfect," said a voice neither Katerina's nor Viktor's father's. "The final players are moving into position."
