The Rescue

Viktor checked his watch. "Three minutes," he whispered into his radio. "Everyone ready?"

All around the old paper mill, his new friends waited in the darkness. Elena's team at the front gate. Mr. Chang's men at the power station. The Irish crew with their weapons. All ready to move on his order.

Viktor looked at Anya, who nodded. They wore black clothes and bulletproof suits. Tony stood nearby, looking worried but determined.

"Remember," Viktor said, "we get in, find Luca, and get out. Nothing else matters."

A red flare shot into the night sky—Elena's signal. It was time.

"Go," Viktor ordered.

Suddenly, the night burst with noise and light. At the front gate, Elena's people set off fireworks and drove cars with loud music. Guards ran toward the commotion.

Then the lights went out. Mr. Chang's team had cut the power. Emergency lights flicked on, but they were dim and weak.

BOOM! The Irish team blew a hole in the back wall. Viktor's team rushed through the hole, guns ready.

"East building, second floor," Tony whispered, pointing. "That's where they keep important prisoners."

They moved quietly through the darkness, taking down guards with silent shots. Everything was going according to plan.

Too easy, Viktor thought.

Inside the main building, they split up. Anya took half the team to secure their getaway route. Viktor, Tony, and three others headed for the east building.

"Something's wrong," Tony said suddenly. "Where are all the guards?"

He was right. The halls were almost empty.

Viktor's radio crackled. "Boss," came Elena's voice, "this feels like a setup. There's barely any resistance."

"Keep going," Viktor urged. "We're almost there."

They reached the second floor. According to the plans, Luca should be in room 217. Viktor's heart pounded as they approached the door.

"On three," he whispered. "One...two..."

The door swung open before they could breach it. A guard stepped out, but he wasn't looking their way. Viktor knocked him out with a quick blow to the head.

Inside the room, Viktor froze. It wasn't a jail cell. It was an office.

Maps and papers covered a big table. And there, standing over them, were Luca and Nikolai.

They looked up, surprised by the intrusion. Viktor's gun swung toward Nikolai, but he paused when he saw that neither man seemed alarmed.

"Viktor," Luca said calmly. "You're early."

Not "Thank God you're here." Not "Help me." Just "You're early."

The video flashed in Viktor's mind—Luca and Nikolai talking like old friends. His worst fears proven.

"What's going on?" Viktor asked, his gun still aimed at Nikolai.

Luca stepped forward. "I can explain—"

A warning shout from Tony stopped him. Guards were coming up the stairs.

"We need to go," Tony pushed. "Now!"

Luca grabbed a folder from the table. "I need these," he told Viktor, moving to his side.

Viktor felt relief rush through him. Whatever was happening, Luca was still coming with him.

"Kill them," Nikolai directed the guards who burst into the room.

Bullets flew as Viktor's team returned fire. They backed toward a service lift, shooting as they went.

"This way," Luca said, pulling Viktor into the lift. Tony and one other man made it in with them. The doors closed just as more guards arrived.

"The others?" Viktor asked.

"They'll fall back to the meeting point," Tony said, breathing hard.

As the lift descended, Viktor stared at Luca. His face had a fresh bruise, but otherwise he looked unhurt. Not like a prisoner at all.

"Start talking," Viktor ordered.

"Not here," Luca replied, looking at the security camera in the corner.

When the elevator hit the bottom floor, they expected more guards. Instead, they found empty halls.

"This doesn't make sense," Tony mumbled. "Where is everyone?"

They moved carefully toward the exit. Outside, gunfire and explosions still rocked the compound, but their path stayed strangely clear.

"Viktor, wait." Luca grabbed his arm. "Something's not right."

Before Viktor could reply, Nikolai's voice came over the loudspeakers.

"Let them go," he ordered. "All units, stand down."

The gunfire stopped instantly.

"This is definitely a trap," Tony whispered.

They reached the back wall where the Irish had blown their entry. Elena waited there with her leftover people. She looked at Luca with suspicion.

"Is that him?" she asked.

Viktor nodded. "Let's move."

As they rushed through the hole in the wall, Viktor kept waiting for the attack that never came. They reached their cars without incident and sped away into the night.

At their new safe house—a lakeside cabin miles from the city—Viktor's allies met to celebrate their success. But Viktor couldn't shake the thought that it had all been too easy.

When the others left to rest, Viktor approached Luca in the back room.

"What happened in there?" he asked. "Why were you with Nikolai? Why did he let us escape?"

Luca put the stolen folder on the table between them. "Because of this."

He opened it to show photos, documents, and a USB drive.

"This proves that someone has been playing us against each other for years," Luca explained. "Someone who wanted both our families destroyed."

"Who?"

"I don't know yet," Luca revealed. "But Nikolai found out he was being used too. That's why he didn't kill me."

Viktor stared at the papers, his mind racing. "The message," he mumbled. "The one about my mother..."

Luca nodded. "Nikolai knew her. He says she didn't die the way you think."

A knock stopped them. Anya opened the door, her face pale.

"You need to see this," she said, turning on the TV.

Breaking news appeared across the screen. Police had raided six sites across the city—all properties belonging to Viktor's allies.

"Elena's been arrested," Anya reported. "Mr. Chang too. Someone gave the police everything—names, locations, evidence."

Viktor and Luca traded alarmed looks.

"It's happening again," Luca said. "Someone's moving against us."

Viktor's phone rang. Unknown number.

"Hello?" he replied cautiously.

A familiar voice replied—the same one that had sent the plans.

"I told you nothing is as it seems," the voice said. "Check the USB drive Luca took. The truth about your mother is there."

The line went dead.

Luca pulled out the USB drive. "Should we?"

Viktor paused, then nodded.

They put it into Anya's laptop. A single video file emerged. Viktor clicked play with shaky fingers.

The grainy video showed a woman being escorted into a car. The date stamp read "June 14, 2001"—six months after his mother's claimed death.

The woman turned toward the camera for just a moment.

"Is that—" Luca began.

"My mother," Viktor whispered. "She's alive."

The screen suddenly went black. Then a message appeared:

"She's been waiting for you, Viktor. Both of you. Come alone."

Below was an address.

Viktor looked at Luca, his world turned upside down.

"It's another trap," Anya warned.

But Viktor was already grabbing his coat.

"I have to know," he said.

Luca stood. "I'm coming with you."

As they started for the door, Anya called after them: "What if it's Nikolai?"

"It's not," Viktor answered, though he wasn't sure why he felt so certain.

In the car, Luca finally asked the question hanging between them.

"If she's alive," he said quietly, "why did she let you believe she was dead?"

Viktor gripped the steering wheel tighter. "I guess we're about to find out."

They drove into the night, toward solutions that might destroy everything they thought they knew.
