Chapter 173 CHAPTER 173

Chapter 173 CHAPTER 173

Rowan returns to Blackwell compound and she’s not trying to hide it very well.

She’s glowing.

Actually glowing. Her skin seems brighter. Her eyes shine with inner light. Her movements have different quality less guarded, more fluid, more alive.

She’s a girl in love.

And it shows in every single thing she does.

At breakfast, Luna mentions patrol schedule for day.

Rowan nods without hearing.

She’s thinking about Kaelen’s hands. About the way he held her face when they kissed. About the way his obsidian eyes looked in moonlight.

“Rowan?” Luna asks.

Rowan blinks.

“What?”

“Patrol. Eastern boundary. Two hours.”

“Right. Yes. Eastern boundary.”

But she’s already gone back to thinking about him.

At training with warriors, Rowan misses entire sequence of defensive moves. When warrior asks what she was thinking, she has no answer. Her mind was with obsidian wolf on opposite side of territory.

During council meeting about pack logistics, she spaces out completely. Damian asks her opinion on something and she realizes she has no idea what he was talking about.

Vespera remains unusually quiet inside her consciousness. The goddess is watching. Observing. Not intervening.

Yet.

Luna notices first.

She watches her daughter push food around plate without eating. Watches her stare out window with expression that’s equal parts joy and yearning. Watches her move through compound like someone walking between worlds.

Luna has worn that expression before.

She recognizes the signs.

That evening, Luna finds Damian in his study.

“Something is different with Rowan,” Luna says simply.

Damian looks up from documents.

“Different how?”

“She’s distracted. Glowing. Acting like someone who’s been touched by magic she can’t explain.”

Damian frowns.

He’s noticed too. His warrior daughter is suddenly soft around edges. Dreamy. Lost in something only she can see.

“We should ask her,” Damian says.

Luna and Damian find Rowan in garden at sunset.

She’s standing alone, watching sky turn gold and crimson and silver. Her expression is peaceful. Distant. Beautiful in way that speaks to inner happiness.

“Rowan,” Damian says.

She startles, pulled from reverie.

“We need to talk,” Luna says gently. “You’ve been acting strange. We’re concerned.”

Rowan’s heart immediately begins racing.

She knows what this is. She knew it would come. She just thought she’d have more time.

“I’m fine,” Rowan says.

“You’re not,” Damian says flatly. “You’re distracted. Missing duties. Spacing out during important discussions.”

He steps closer.

“Tell us what’s happening,” he says.

This is her moment. She can lie. She can deflect. She can buy more time.

But Vespera’s voice suddenly speaks sharp and clear inside her consciousness.

Don’t speak.

Vespera’s warning is absolute.

Let me handle this. Don’t reveal anything.

But Rowan opens her mouth to comply…

“She’s in love with Kaelen Nightshade!”

The voice is small and high and belongs to Ronan.

The four-year-old has wandered into garden and, unable to contain ancient soul’s burden of knowing, blurts the secret he’s been carrying since witnessing them in Eden.

Everything freezes.

Luna’s expression shifts from concern to understanding. She knew.

Damian’s expression shifts from concern to something far more dangerous.

Rowan’s eyes go wide with horror.

“Ronan…” she tries.

“I saw them!” Ronan continues, ancient consciousness overriding childhood restraint. “In Eden Forest! They were together and the cosmic resonance was so strong and I couldn’t keep it secret anymore because prophecy is fragmenting and…”

“Enough,” Damian says.

His voice is quiet.

But it’s the kind of quiet that speaks volumes.

Damian doesn’t yell.

Rowan realizes this as she watches her father process the revelation. He doesn’t rage. Doesn’t shout. Doesn’t move with violence.

Instead, his entire body goes very still.

His hands clench at sides.

His eyes flash amber then return to human.

His chest rises and falls with controlled breathing as he fights for composure.

When he finally speaks, his voice is cold in way that’s far worse than shouting.

“You’re in love with the heir of Shadowfang pack.”

It’s not question.

“Yes,” Rowan says quietly.

The word seems to hit Damian physically.

He turns away.

Takes several steps.

Comes back.

“Do you understand what you’ve done?” he asks. “Do you comprehend the implications?”

“Yes,” Rowan says. “I understand…”

“You don’t,” Damian cuts her off. “You can’t possibly understand. You’re daughter of Blackwell Alpha. You are goddess hybrid. You are supposed to think about pack first. Duty first. Not about feeling.”

His voice grows harder.

“Shadowfang is our oldest enemy,” Damian continues. “Centuries of border disputes. Centuries of tension. And you decide to fall in love with their heir?”

“I didn’t decide…” Rowan tries.

“Yes, you did,” Damian says. His anger is controlled but evident in every word. “You made choice to betray your pack. To compromise your position. To put yourself above family.”

Luna touches his arm gently.

“Damian..”

“No,” he says. His eyes don’t leave Rowan. “This isn’t acceptable. This isn’t something we can overlook.”

He looks at his daughter like she’s stranger.

“You will end this,” Damian says flatly. “Immediately. You will not contact him. You will not see him. You will not communicate with him in any way.”

“Father, I can’t…” Rowan says.

“You will,” Damian says. His voice is final. His Alpha authority is absolute. “Because if you don’t, I will have to take action that will damage both packs.”

The implied threat hangs heavy.

Rowan has never seen her father this angry.

Not even at Ivory.

Not even during worst pack crises.

This anger is different. It’s personal. It’s paternal fury at daughter who’s made choice he sees as betrayal.

Luna is watching her mate with concern.

She understands his anger. She really does.

But she also remembers what it was like to choose love despite pack politics.

She tries to reach him.

“Damian, we need to discuss this rationally…”

“There’s nothing to discuss,” Damian says. “Our daughter is compromised. That’s the only discussion we need to have.”

He leaves.

Walks away from garden leaving Rowan standing in sunset with Luna and Ronan and shattering realization that she’s just watched her father decide she’s made choice he can’t forgive.

Across territory, in Shadowfang compound, situation is entirely different.

Kaelen is in council hall with his father and pack elders.

They’ve noticed the same things Blackwell noticed his distraction, his glowing, his changed behavior.

But they’re asking different questions.

“You’re different lately,” Kaelen’s father says. He’s older than Damian, with silver threading through black hair. His obsidian eyes mirror his son’s. “Something has changed you.”

Kaelen doesn’t hesitate.

“I’m in love,” he says simply.

The elders exchange glances.

“With whom?” his father asks.

“Rowan Blackwell,” Kaelen says. He stands, owning his choice completely. “Silver Wolf hybrid. Goddess consciousness. My cosmic counterpart.”

Kaelen expects anger.

Expects disappointment.

Expects ultimatum like Damian is giving Rowan.

Instead, his father’s expression shifts to thoughtful.

“Rowan Blackwell,” he repeats. “The Alpha’s daughter.”

“Yes.”

“And she’s in love with you?”

“Yes.”

Kaelen’s father is quiet for long moment.

Then he begins to laugh.

It’s genuine laugh. Not mocking. Not cruel.

Actual amusement.

“Well,” he says. “That certainly complicates things.”

The elders look at him with surprise.

“You’re not angry?” one elder asks.

“Should I be?” Kaelen’s father says. He looks at his son. “My son has found mate. Her lineage is complicated, yes. Her pack is our rival, yes. But he’s found cosmic match. That’s rarer than gold.”

He stands and walks to Kaelen.

“Does she love you?” he asks.

“Completely,” Kaelen says.

His father nods.

“Then we figure out how to make it work,” he says simply. “Because love that strong doesn’t come along often. And any pack that would stand in way of that is foolish.”

Kaelen watches his father’s response and understands something essential:

Blackwell and Shadowfang are different packs with different values.

Blackwell prioritizes duty and pack above all else.

Shadowfang prioritizes bonds and connections above all else.

It’s why they’ve been enemies for so long.

And it’s why Damian will try to keep them apart while Kaelen’s father will try to help them be together.

Kaelen feels something shift across territory around midnight.

It’s not physical sensation. It’s something deeper. Something in cosmic resonance between them.

He feels Rowan’s pain.

He feels her father’s anger.

He understands somehow that their secret is exposed and consequences are beginning.

Without being told, he knows.

He knows she’s in trouble.

And he knows Damian will try to keep them apart.

Kaelen stands on cliff overlooking Blackwell territory.

His father’s permission to pursue love is one thing.

Damian’s prohibition is another.

But Kaelen understands something that Damian is only beginning to learn:

Some bonds are stronger than pack law.

Some connections transcend political boundaries.

Some loves are worth defying Alpha for.

He makes decision.

He’s going to go to Blackwell.

He’s going to face Damian.

He’s going to stand before his father and declare his intention to be with Rowan regardless of consequences.

Because cosmic counterparts don’t accept separation.

Because twelve centuries of searching doesn’t end because Alpha says it must.

Because some things are worth breaking worlds for.

In her room, Rowan lies in darkness and feels Kaelen’s presence across territory.

She feels his determination.

She feels his intention.

She feels his love like light pushing through walls she’s trying to build around her heart to protect it from Damian’s anger.

Don’t come, she tries to communicate through cosmic bond.

My father will declare war.

But she feels his response clear as daylight:

Then we’ll face war together.
