Chapter 22: Shadow, Whispers and a dangerous spark.
Tokyo's skyline glitters like a mirage of dark temptation beneath a shimmering veil of darkness and unrelenting urban tension now.
Sherry stepped onto the rooftop terrace of the suite building with heels clutched in one hand and the phone grasped tightly in the other.
The silk dress fluttered erratically against her thighs like a second languid breath beneath a canopy of cool air redolent with cherry blossoms and engine fumes.
She needed space. Distance. Silence that didn’t smell like Enzo.
Robert’s message had ignited a tremor beneath her ribs: “You don’t have to stay in his shadow. I can offer you freedom.”
A taunt? A warning? Or a trap?
She dialed Sophie.
The moment her friend picked up, Sherry breathed in shakily and dropped on a cushioned lounge chair there, head tilted to the sky. “Hey.”
“Girl! What kind of billionaire honeymoon keeps you this quiet for weeks? Don’t tell me you’ve been locked in silk sheets and sex fumes.”
Sherry forced a soft, amused laugh, though it tasted bitter. “Something like that.”
She didn’t dare admit the truth: the honeymoon had been a hollow echo, a script played out for the world while they danced on opposite sides of an invisible war.
Still, Sophie deserved a version of the fantasy.
“I mean, it’s Enzo Blackwood, Soph. Billionaire, arrogant, bossy as hell. Do you think I got much sleep?”
Sophie squealed on the other end. “God, I knew it! You always get the ones who look like sin in a suit. Spill! How is the latest couple in town doing today?”
Sherry shifted, her smile waning. “We are done with our honeymoon, my dear. We went on a business trip.
We had a meeting today, after which we had to go for the second part of the planned schedule, which was a business dinner.
Guess what?
"Oooooh! ... I can't guess; just give it to me, nah!" Soph shouted.
"His colleagues were… flirtatious,” Sherry uttered.
“Ugh. That bunch?” Sophie scoffed. “Those men destroy happy homes for sport. They don’t see women; they see trophies. Stay far away, babe. You’re worth more than whatever ego boost they get from chasing married women.”
Before Sherry could respond, the terrace door creaked open.
She turned sharply and was shocked at who she saw.
Robert Gray stepped into view, all tailored menace and polished charm. He wore a smile like a secret, one hand tucked into his pocket, the other holding a glass of wine like he belonged here.
“Sophie, I will call you back,” she whispered and hung up without waiting for a reply.
Robert’s smile widened. “Didn’t mean to interrupt, First Lady. Just saw you up here; thought I’d say hello.”
She rose slowly, narrowing her eyes. “Are you following me now?”
“Coincidence,” he lied with ease. “But if I were? Would it bother you?”
She didn’t answer.
He stepped closer, close enough that she caught the faint scent of sandalwood and danger. “You don’t strike me as the type to settle with Enzo Blackwood, Sherry. And yet… here you are. Married to a man whose eyes don’t even meet yours.”
Her pulse flickered.
Robert continued, his voice dropping like silk over razors. “You think Enzo saved Margo Fashion House, your father’s company, out of generosity? Think again.
He didn’t do that to help the company stand back or as an act to invest, and not even out of love; he did it out of revenge. Your father crossed the Blackwoods' wrong side once. Enzo’s just… finishing the game.”
Sherry’s nails dug into her palm. “Robert! You don’t know what you’re fucking talking about.”
“Oh, I do.” He handed her a card. “When you’re ready to stop being a pawn, call me. I can help you. I want to, and I would love to do that.”
She stared at the card like it might catch fire in her hand. “Why would you help me?”
“Because you deserve better than being owned,” he murmured. “And I take pleasure in burning kings who think they’re gods.”
He turned and walked away, not waiting for a reply.
Sherry stood still, her chest heaving, fury rising like a flood tide.
Minutes later, she burst into the suite, slamming the door shut behind her. Enzo was at the bar, whiskey in hand, his shirt sleeves rolled up, looking breathtakingly and dangerously calm.
She hurled the card across the room.
“It’s true, isn’t it?” Her voice cracked with emotion. “You didn’t invest in Margo to save my father. You did it to punish him.”
Enzo’s jaw tightened. “Where did you hear that?”
“Answer me!”
He crossed the room in three long strides. “You’re believing him? Robert fucking Gray?”
“I wouldn’t have to if you ever told me the truth!” she snapped. “Is that what I am to you? A pawn in your perfect revenge story?”
“No!” he growled. “You think I would tie myself to you, risk everything, just for vengeance?”
Sherry’s lip trembled. “Then what do you call this? Silence, distance, lies.
“I call it help and protection,” Enzo barked. “I’m the reason that company’s alive. That you’re not drowning in lawsuits or shame. You have no idea the lengths I’ve gone to.”
She shoved him. “Don’t make this about you, Enzo!”
Enzo grabbed her wrists mid-shove, slamming her gently against the wall, his face inches from hers, breath ragged.
“Do you believe him… or me?” He whispered, his voice deadly soft.
She blinked, her breath caught. His grip was firm but not painful. His proximity set her nerves ablaze.
“I....” she stammered.
His eyes flicked to her mouth.
“I have only wanted to protect you,” he murmured, lowering his head to her ear. “Even when I hated myself for it.”
His fingers loosened, drawing lines down her arms and her sides. His touch was magnetic, soft where it should have been rough, and rough where it needed to linger.
She gasped when he touched her hair, gently twisting it, then tracing the line of her throat with the back of his hand.
Her knees threatened to be weak.
“Enzo…” she whispered.
“I see the way they look at you,” he pursed and breathed in, voice tightening. “Like they could ever deserve you.”
He cupped her face, tilting it upward, lips brushing hers but never pressing it. His breath was fire. His restraint? Torture.
Sherry whimpered, caught between fury and arousal.
“I hate how much I want you,” he said, teeth gritted.
She arched into him, lips parted a bit, inches away. Her body screamed yes. Her mind screamed, "Stop!" Her heart didn’t know which to obey.
Just when their lips almost met, when the air turned molten ...
Enzo stopped and froze.
Then he pulled back, his chest heaving.
“I can’t,” he growled, stepping away. “Not like this.”
Sherry stood there, stunned, lips trembling, body blazing with heat and unanswered hunger.
The silence roared.
Moments later, Enzo disappeared into the bathroom, slamming the door behind him.
She stared after him, heart pounding, fingers pressed to the wall like she might fall apart.
And for the first time… she didn’t know who the enemy truly was.
The man she married?
Or the man whispering the truth wrapped in poison?
One thing was clear.
Tomorrow would bring war.
