Chapter 56: Rage In My Bones
Chapter 56: Rage In My Bones
Dante
I hated this plan from the on set. I hated it even more when I had to stay away from her and be tied to another bitch because of it... Coming back home was something I had always dreaded. I dreaded it because the situation here always forced my hand into making decisions that would be my ruin in the end.
Our ruin.
I sat through greeting business associates of Padrino, the ones I would need by my side if a war should break out within Cosa Nostra. Since the houses were giving me a hand like this, I knew better than to believe in the illusion that a war could be avoided. Everyone in this stupid party, wanted their fair share of the money that would always flow. I was sick of it.
My closest allies were already in the country, hence silencing my phone every two seconds. Fabian was hellbent on us meeting and discussing the next steps since Rafael was under the radar but I knew it wasn't for long. Knowing my brother, he was already pulling every resource to meet me at my endgame. I couldn't allow that.
"Padrino, you didn't have to do this." I gritted, wiping the smug smile on his face. "I already told you, I am not going to marry Bianca."
"You have always been strong-headed like your mother. I am surprised you haven't pulled a stunt yet." He mocked me. I watched as Bianca was talking with some of her friends as they cheered her at the engagement party.
"That's because I do not have the time for it. Imagine throwing an engagement party and you didn't even think to invite me. I had to hear from Rosa. Imagine, the disgrace you would have faced here today if I didn't show up?" I arched my brows, meeting my grandfather's cold eyes.
He closed the distance between us, a smile stretched his lips, and he gently nudged my shoulders with his strong arm. "Dominic Romano is here, you will keep your ego in check and not ruin it for us. It doesn't matter if you like it or not, we need him. Don't make him feel anything otherwise."
I scoffed, running my hand through my beard. "Is that a threat? You know better than to threaten me, Padrino. I could sink this party to the ground without a second thought."
He sighed. "Don't I know it, son? All I am saying is give it a chance for the sake of everything we've built."
"Sitting through dances with someone I hate isn't going to hold everything we've built together. Find a way out of this contract, Padrino. Or else, you wouldn't like the outcome of my rage."
My eyes peered through the trip floor, hoping to meet those familiar eyes that had been staring at me all day. I didn't see her, panic rose in my bones. I scanned the hall for Rosa. The moment I saw her, my eyes narrowed.
"Dante, I need to introduce you to my friends...."
"Not now, Bianca." I stomped my feet against the floor, as I grabbed Rosa away from her make-out session.
"What the fuck?!"
"Where is she?" Rosa rolled her eyes. "You were supposed to be with her." I thundered.
"Come on, you're talking as if you don't know your fiancé. She's just as strong-willed as you. If you don't mind, I was busy." Her red lips met the wine glass. I took it from her, giving it to the waitress, dancing around the room with an empty wine tray. My cold eyes didn't stray away from hers I didn't know how long I could keep the rage in my bones. "Fine, I thought you saw her earlier. She was with Sicario the last time I checked on her. They went out. Be careful and don't blow the plan because of your possessiveness."
I dashed out of the hall before she breathed her last word. My instinct only swirled around one place where she might be. My eyes wandered through the little lights around the garden where I had seen them, closest staring at each other.
"What the hell do you think you are doing?" Sicario, eyes narrowed against mine, without remorse. The world shifted, and I felt her tension without being near her. They were this close...
"I asked a question!" My voice was low but carried power.
She took a step back. "I was just..."
"Talking." Sicario finished for her, calm and unbothered. "Relax Dante, I was just keeping her company. A beautiful lady shouldn't be left alone in a crowd filled with wolves." Sicario had power in the game but it was nothing compared to mine. Still, he knew how to tip the scale of balance to his advantage. He was as mischievous as they come.
I heaved. "No one asked you to keep her company. You should have left her alone."
"Then, what kind of a man would I be?" He sank his fingers in his pocket, and a smirk flashed through the darkness, only burning my rage a bit faster.
I closed the gap between us. "You shouldn't be speaking to her at all."
Sicario raised an eyebrow. "Why? Is she your prisoner or your guest?"
The air went still. Isla tried to stop me but I didn't budge. "She is mine." I seethed. The words held on to the tension a bit harder. Like a spark to dry wood. Suddenly, burning and dangerous.
Sicario smiled faintly. "Then you should learn to hold on tighter."
Before I could move, Isla moved between us. "Enough! Both of you." Her voice was shaky but firm. "This... This isn't the place."
I looked at her as my vision went darker and wild. "You think I don't see it? The way he looks at you? The way you look at him? He has been staring since he came to this damn party!"
She swallowed hard. "You are imagining things."
I leaned in closer, my breath hot against her ear. "I don't imagine, Tesoro. I warn."
"Dante, you are not yourself right now. Just drop it."
Sicario chuckled softly, as if amused. "I like her spirit." He said, eyes still on her. "She doesn't scare easily."
"Leave!" I commanded without looking at him.
Sicario shrugged. “As you wish.” He turned to her, his gaze softening just a little. “Remember what I said. Don’t let them steal your fire.”
Then he was gone, his shadow disappearing into the night. I kept staring at the space where Sicario had vanished. All I could do was rage.
Nothing could stop it, not even rage.
